Book excerpt: Optical wireless communication (OWC) is an alternative to radio frequency (RF)communication with a signi cantly larger and unregulated spectrum. In OWC systems, optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) with intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is commonly used. There are two common signal structures in most OWC systems based on IM/DD OFDM. One is called DC-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) and the other one is called asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM). One drawback of an OFDM signal is its high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which requires the transmitter to operate in a large dynamic range to retain all desirable information. To reduce the PAPR,companding transform has been investigated. Because of the nonlinear operation of companding, a high electrical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is required. In this thesis, a combination of an exponential companding transform and a zero padding scheme is employed on both DCO-OFDM and ACO-OFDM systems to reduce PAPR and the required electrical SNR. Systems that employ quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) with gray mapping are simulated. Results have shown that the optimized DCO-OFDM and ACO-OFDM reduced the PAPR by about 7dB and 11dB, respectively, through exponential companding. Meanwhile, the required SNR is decreased by approximately 10dB in the optimized DCO-OFDM and by approximately 13dB in the optimized ACO-OFDM by using zero padding.

Hence, there is substantial demand of alternative spectrum regions for communications to recline the conventional RF spectrum. In this context, optical wireless communications (OWC) is explored as a likely candidate to supplement the RF communications. The current work focuses on impairment mitigation techniques and energy-efficient modulation approaches for OWC. Firstly, the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) for optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) is studied and two decision-directed PAPR reduction techniques are presented. The complexity of these methods is comparatively lower than other PAPR reduction methods, whilst, their performance is likewise analogous with other alternatives. Secondly, an optical-single-carrier frequency division multiple access (O-SCFDMA) approach, referred to as Hermitain symmetry free O-SCFDMA (HSFO-SCFDMA) is proposed, that averts Hermiatian symmetry which is normally expected for other O-OFDM and O-SCFDMA approaches. The simulation results affirm that HSFO-SCFDMA is more efficient than any other O-SCFDMA approach for OWC and manifests the lowest PAPR among the other alternatives. Thirdly, the performance of precoding is analyzed for layered asymmetrically clipped O-OFDM (LACO-OFDM). Two types of precoding are employed, i.e., Fourier transform precoding and Hartley transform precoding. It is established that Hartley transform precoded LACO-OFDM exhibits the lowest PAPR and is less vulnerable to non-linear distortion introduced by the light emitting diodes (LEDs), howbeit, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) increase (both electrical and optical) owing to the layered structure is higher than conventional LACO-OFDM.

Book excerpt: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is currently being used predominantly in radio frequency (RF) mobile broadband communication systems because of its ability to combat inter-symbol interference (ISI) and robustness against frequency selective fading caused by multipath wireless channel. Wireless mobile standards like 3G and 4G long term evolution (LTE) use orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) as a multiplexing/modulation scheme. Despite its many advantages like single tap frequency domain equalization and fast discrete time implementation, OFDM suffers from certain disadvantages like high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and high sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO). Although OFDM has solved problems like multipath fading but it cannot solve the emerging problems like scarcity of RF spectrum for mobile wireless broadband applications. Optical wireless (OW) communication has recently gained a lot of attention as a candidate to complement RF communication. It offers advantages like virtually infinite bandwidth, data security and use of low cost transmitters and receivers like solid state light emitting diodes (LEDs) and optical detectors. OFDM is also being considered as a candidate for visible light communication (VLC) as it offers robustness against multipath caused by diffuse indoor OW channel. One way to realize VLC is intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD). Although the major difference between RF and OW based OFDM lies in the front end of transmitter and receiver, but due to the unipolar nature of optical intensity in IM/DD system, methods of generating baseband OFDM signal, techniques to reduce PAPR and timing synchronization schemes for RF cannot be directly applied to optical OFDM systems and therefore must be revisited. Therefore, in this thesis, we will first look into the interference caused by CFO in RF based OFDMA system and will analyze the characteristics of this interference for two mapping subcarrier strategies. We will explicitly calculate SINR expression for OFDMA based systems and analyze two types of symbol mapping strategies and characterize interferences due to CFO for each scheme. We will also develop some techniques to reduce high PAPR in OFDM based OW systems since the non-linear characteristics of LED transmitters can severely affect system performance. We will look into various precoding based PAPR reduction techniques. We will then analyze performance of various OFDM based OW schemes in multipath diffuse indoor wireless channel. We will compare performance of conventional schemes with a precoded version. We will then describe in detail our newly proposed power and spectrally efficient hybrid asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (HACO-OFDM) system and compare its performance with previously proposed schemes. Finally, we will present details of our newly proposed timing synchronization scheme for power efficient asymmetrically clipped (AC) OW OFDM systems. Detailed performance analysis will be presented and a comparison will be developed. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms all other timing synchronization techniques and exhibits perfect accuracy even at very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Besides performance, our scheme works perfectly for multiple AC OW which proves its high versatility.

Book excerpt: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technology in wireless communication. High Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) is one of the challenging issues of OFDM systems. High PAPR forces the High Power Amplifier (HPA) to operate in its linear region with wide dynamic range, where the power efficiency is very poor. This book gives an overview of different PAPR reduction techniques. And deals in detail with the efficient use of Selected Mapping (SLM) and Partial Transmit Sequence (PTS)technique to reduce high PAPR in OFDM systems.

Book excerpt: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), a multicarrier modulation technique, widely used for many of the latest wireless standards such as Wi-Fi, LTE / LTE-A, DAB, DVB, WiMAX and so on. However, its high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) for a large number of subcarriers which may drive the amplifier into non-linear region that radiates signals out of band, making it unobtrusive for practical applications. In this book, the comprehensive research and comparison are put forward for a variety of currently promising PAPR reduction methods on the basis of extensive reading and studying of associated papers and literature in this research area. The book caters to the needs of research fraternity and students in the field of wireless communication. The requirement for the readers of this book is to be familiar with the basics of OFDM system, however, R & D engineers from industry community working under wireless communication group can also benefit from this book as a supplementary reference.

From listening to music using Bluetooth headset, accessing information on the web on the move using WiFi or 3G to calling our loved ones who are on the other side of the globe and locating our position when lost, can be done using a plethora of wireless devices available today. This thesis addresses the problem of high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) found in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modems. The reason for high PAPR in OFDM is the constructive addition of sinusoidal signals at different frequencies. High PAPR increases the dynamic range of power amplifier operation, thereby resulting in increased cost and chip area. This thesis proposes several high rate techniques to reduce PAPR. One technique extends the efficiency of the well known complementary code keying (CCK) OFDM. The second technique eliminates high PAPR by removing the periodicity which may exist between the bits fed to the OFDM transmitter. This rate-12/16 technique is compared to other techniques such as traditional OFDM and carrier-interferometry (CI) OFDM. Further, this thesis integrates the proposed rate-12/16 technique and CCK to obtain an improved rate-12/16 technique, which brings the PAPR value down to a new low. Bit error rates (BER) are obtained for each coding technique for comparison. The proposed rate-12/16 technique achieves good BER performance due to the coding gain it provides. The improved rate-12/16 outperformed all the techniques discussed in terms of PAPR.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on optical communications having recently attracted significant attentions as a promising complementary technique for radio frequency (RF) in both short- and long-range communications. These systems offer significant technical and operational advantages such as higher capacity, virtually unlimited reuse, unregulated spectrum and robustness to electromagnetic interference. Optical wireless communication (OWC) can be used both indoors and outdoors. Part of the dissertation contains novel results on terrestrial free-space optical (FSO) communications. FSO communication is a line-of sight technique that uses lasers for high rate wireless communication over distances up to several kilometers. In comparison to RF counterparts, a FSO link has a very high optical bandwidth available, allowing aggregate data rates on the order of Tera bits per second (1 Tera bits per second is 1000 Giga bites per second). However, FSO suffers limitations. The major limitation of the terrestrial FSO communication systems is the atmospheric turbulence, which produces fluctuations in the irradiance of the transmitted optical beam, as a result of random variations in the refractive index through the link. The existence of atmospheric-induced turbulence degrades the performance of FSO links particularly with a transmission distance longer than 1 kilometer. The identification of a tractable probability density function (pdf) to describe atmospheric turbulence under all irradiance fluctuation regimes is crucial in order to study the reliability of a terrestrial FSO system. This dissertation addresses this daunting problem and proposes a novel statistical model that accurately describes turbulence-induced fading under all irradiance conditions and unifies most of the proposed statistical models derived until now in the literature. The proposed model is important for the research community working on FSO communications because it allows them to fully capitalize on the potentials of currently used FSO systems. Furthermore, utilizing this new statistical channel model, closed-form expressions for the diversity gain and the error rate performance of FSO links with spatial diversity are derived. In addition to addressing ways to improve outdoor FSO communication systems, this dissertation addresses some major challenges in indoor visible light communication (VLC). VLC is an advantageous technique that is proposed for wireless indoor communications. In VLC systems, the existence of multiple paths between the transmitter and receiver causes multipath distortion, particularly in links using non-directional transmitters and receivers, or in links relying upon non-line of-sight propagation. This multipath distortion can lead to intersymbol interference (ISI) at high bit rates. Multicarrier modulation usually implemented by orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can be used to mitigate ISI and multipath dispersion. Nevertheless, the performance of VLC systems employing OFDM modulation is significantly affected by nonlinear characteristic of light-emitting diode (LED) due to the large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM signal. In other words, signal amplitudes below the LED turn-on-voltage and above the LED saturation point are clipped. This dissertation targets these important issues and successfully addresses them by developing some techniques to reduce high PAPR of optical OFDM signal and determining the optimum operating characteristics of LEDs for combined lighting and communications applications. VLC can also provide a practical solution for indoor positioning as global positioning system (GPS) does not provide an accurate and rapid indoor positioning since GPS radio signals are attenuated and scattered by walls of large buildings and other objects. A practical VLC system would be likely to deploy the same configuration for both positioning and communication purposes where high speed data rates are desired. This dissertation also proposes a novel OFDM VLC system that provides a high data rate transmission and can be used for both indoor positioning and communications where the multipath reflections are taken into account. Description of an experimental demonstration is also part of the dissertation where a software defined radio (SDR) was employed as the primary hardware and software interface to verify some of the results of the topics discussed earlier.

Being a frequency-domain approach to communications, OFDM has important advantages in dealing with the frequency-selective nature of high data rate wireless communication channels. As the needs for operating with higher data rates become more pressing, OFDM systems have emerged as an effective physical-layer solution. This short monograph is intended as a tutorial which highlights the deleterious aspects of the wireless channel and presents why OFDM is a good choice as a modulation that can transmit at high data rates. The system-level approach we shall pursue will also point out the disadvantages of OFDM systems especially in the context of peak to average ratio, and carrier frequency synchronization. Finally, simulation of OFDM systems will be given due prominence. Simple MATLAB programs are provided for bit error rate simulation using a discrete-time OFDM representation. Software is also provided to simulate the effects of inter-block-interference, inter-carrier-interference and signal clipping on the error rate performance. Different components of the OFDM system are described, and detailed implementation notes are provided for the programs. The program can be downloaded here.
