Book excerpt: This publication contains the 20 invited papers which were presented and discussed at the Technical Consultation on Reduction of Wastage in Fisheries held in Tokyo, Japan (28 October - 1 November 1996). The first section consists of papers which discuss the issues of wastage reduction, selectivity of fishing practices, utilization of presently discarded catch and management measures that are being or have been made in various countries to reduce wastage and discards. The second section contains papers which review the bycatch and discards problem in various regions and endeavour to quantify and qualify the magnitude of wastage. Comparisons are made with earlier estimates given in FAO Fisheries Technical Paper no. 339 - A Global Assessment of Fisheries Bycatch and Discards.

Book excerpt: This publication gives an updated review of the quantity of discards in the world's marine fisheries, using information from a broad range of fisheries in all continents. A number of policy issues are discussed including a 'no discards' approach to fisheries management, the need for balance between bycatch reduction and bycatch utilisation initiatives, and concerns arising from incidental catches of marine mammals, birds and reptiles. The report also highlights the need for more robust methods of estimating discards, and the development of bycatch management plans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in commercial fisheries production over the last 50 years has been accompanied by an increase in the level of incidental catch and discarding of a number of species. Approximately one quarter of the marine commercial catch destined for human consumption is discarded at sea. This has raised the concern of a number of groups in society, including environmentalists, humanitarians and fishers themselves. In this paper, the economic incentives to discard fish are examined. The effects of different managemenet policies on these incentives are also investigated. The concept of an optimal level of discarding is discussed taking into account the externalities that can be created by discarding. Finally, the effectiveness of various measures to reduce the level of discarding is reviewed. these including technical, administrative and economic measures.

Book excerpt: In Asia, the fisheries sector is important in terms of food security, livelihoods and foreign exchange earnings. However, as in many parts of the world, there are signs that capture fisheries are fully exploited or overfished. Management of fisheries in the region is often hampered by lack of information on the status of fisheries in terms of biological, social, economic, policy and governance aspects. This regional project documents an alarming decline on coastal fishery resources, based on historic research surveys in South and Southeast Asia. Socio-economic analyses and policy reviews highlight the importance of the fisheries sector but also the challenges facing it. Potential interventions to improve fisheries management in the countries are outlined and defined with environmental, socioeconomic and institutional objectives.

Book excerpt: Fisheries and Aquaculture theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Fisheries are a major life support system and the main purpose of this theme on Fisheries and Aquaculture is to provide baseline information and latest knowledge at the dawn of this century to facilitate vital fisheries recovery before their irreparable collapse. This Theme on Fisheries and Aquaculture is divided into five topics. It starts with discussions on major issues and challenges in “Harvesting the Seas”, with emphasis on the role and importance of the fisheries sector and its environment, and introduces trends and perspectives in marine fisheries, including allocation of use rights, subsidies, and port management. The next two topics present an in-depth and detailed knowledge on fish and other aquatic living resources that are commercially exploited and/or farmed. The third topic on Inland Fisheries presents salmonid fish, eels, shad, whitefish and smelt, carp, perch, pike and bass, tilapia, frog, and crustaceans. The fourth topic presents a comprehensive review of trends and perspectives in Aquaculture: Principles and Prospects. The fifth topic on Economics of Fisheries and Aquaculture reviews the latest views and concepts useful to apprehend the fisheries management regime, including a comparative static economic theory and a dynamic theory of fishery, spatial bioeconomic dynamics and role of international law in the management of marine fisheries, rights-based and community fisheries management, aquaculture economics, and game theory and fisheries. These five volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers, NGOs and GOs.

The NILOS Documentary Yearbook has proved to be of invaluable assistance in facilitating access by the community of scholars and practitioners in ocean affairs and the law of the sea to essential documentation. The entry of the 1992 UN Law of the Sea Convention into force on 16th November 1994 and of the Part XI Agreement - on 28 July 1996, and progress in the implementation of Chapter 17 of Agenda 21, make continuation of this assistance of particular significance in the years to come. To address some of these challenges, this book presents advancements in fisheries bioeconomics research that provides significant ideas for addressing emerging environmental and fisheries management issues. Advances in Fisheries Bioeconomics gives insights into innovative approaches dealing with these issues, as well as novel ideas on changes in fisheries management paradigms. With contributions from leading experts in the field, this book offers an examination of a number of topics including: ecosystem based fisheries management; by-catch management and discard bans; the number of players in the fisheries game; the effects of ocean acidification; and the trends and impacts of eco-labeling and eco-certification of fisheries. Through integrating resource biology and ecology with the economics of fishers’ behaviour, the authors provide valuable analysis of the current issues in fisheries management. This book will be of interest to those on advanced courses in fisheries science, natural resource biology and ecology, and environmental and natural resource economics. It will also appeal to researchers, policy makers, and advocacy groups around the world.
