Book Synopsis The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism, 1815–1860 by : Jack Lawrence Schermerhorn
Download or read book The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism, 1815–1860 written by Jack Lawrence Schermerhorn and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvin Schermerhorn’s provocative study views the development of modern American capitalism through the window of the nineteenth-century interstate slave trade. This eye-opening history follows money and ships as well as enslaved human beings to demonstrate how slavery was a national business supported by far-flung monetary and credit systems reaching across the Atlantic Ocean. The author details the anatomy of slave supply chains and the chains of credit and commodities that intersected with them in virtually every corner of the pre–Civil War United States, and explores how an institution that destroyed lives and families contributed greatly to the growth of the expanding republic’s capitalist economy.

This comprehensive volume overcomes this gap by providing an overview of the field, drawing together current knowledge of risk in a wide range of different accounting contexts. Key themes such as corporate governance, trust, uncertainty and climate change are covered by a global array of contributing scholars. These contributions are divided into four areas: The broader aspects of risk and risk management Risk in financial reporting Risk in management accounting Risk monitoring The book is supported by a series of illustrative case studies which help to bring together theory and practice. With its wealth of examples and analyses, this volume provides essential reading for students, scholars and practitioners charged with understanding diverse facets of risk in the context of accounting in the business world.

Book Synopsis Capitalism from Above and Capitalism from Below by : T. Byres
Download or read book Capitalism from Above and Capitalism from Below written by T. Byres and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-01-12 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinction between 'capitalism from above' and 'capitalism from below' is important in the analysis of the agrarian question in poor countries. The 'Prussian path' and the 'American path' are here examined, against existing historical scholarship. Their unfolding, from their earliest roots to the point of final 'agrarian transition' in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, is considered. The dialectic between social relations and productive forces, mediated as it was by the state, is treated and the implications for capitalist industrialisation scrutinised.
Book Synopsis Coal-Mining Safety in the Progressive Period by : William Graebner
Download or read book Coal-Mining Safety in the Progressive Period written by William Graebner and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the first decade of the twentieth century, Americans looked upon industrial accidents with callous disregard; they were accepted as an unfortunate but necessary adjunct to industrial society. A series of mine disasters in December 1907 (including one in Monongah, West Virginia, which took a toll of 361 lives) shook the public, at least temporarily, out of its lethargy. In this award-winning study, author William Graebner traces the development of mine safety reform in the years immediately following these tragic events. Reform activities during the Progressive period centered on the Bureau of Mines and an effort to obtain uniform state legislation; the effect of each was minimal. Mr. Graebner concludes that these idealistic solutions of the time were at once the great hope and the great failure of the Progressive coal-mining safety movement.
