Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume presents language as fully integrated with human existence. On this view, language is not essentially ‘symbolic’, not represented inside minds or brains, and most certainly not determined by micro-social rules and norms. Rather, language is part of our ecology. It emerges when bodies co-ordinate vocal and visible gesture to integrate events with different histories. Enacting feeling, expression and wordings, language permeates the collective, individual and affective life of living beings. It is a profoundly distributed, multi-centric activity that binds people together as they go about their lives. Distributed Language pursues this perspective both theoretically and in relation to empirical work. Empirically, it reports studies on the anticipatory dynamics of reading, its socio-cognitive consequences, Shakespearean theatre, what images evoke (in brain and word), and solving insight problems. Theoretically, the volume challenges linguistic autonomy from overlapping theoretical positions. First, it is argued that language exploits a species specific form of semiotic cognition. Second, it is suggested that the central function of language lies in realizing values that derive from our ecosystemic existence. Third, this is ascribed to how cultural and biological symbols co-regulate the dynamics that shape human activity. Fourth, it is argued that language, far from being organism-centred, gives us an extended ecology in which our co-ordination is saturated by values and norms that are derived from our sociocultural environment. The contributions to this volume expand on those originally published in Pragmatics & Cognition 17:3 (2009).

A critical statement on current events in more than 400 cartoons The economy put in shackles: a critical review on the coronavirus pandemic in more than 400 cartoon The coronavirus outbreak has paralyzed the world: an unprecedented stress test for the health system, enormous challenges for politics and society, resulting in unforeseeable effects on the economy. Can we manage this global challenge? The world leaders and decision-makers in business and politics face difficult tasks every day, because solutions are required quickly. But are the governments' measures to contain the pandemic justified and appropriate? Cartoonists from all over the world have asked themselves these questions. Their drawings and paintings in this illustrated book comment on current events, straight to the point and with a good dose of humor. - How are world governments managing the coronavirus crisis? A critical examination in more than 400 cartoons - Joe Dator, Jason Raish, Gerhard Haderer or Bruce MacKinnon: International artists and illustrators take a stand on the COVID-19 situation - »The New Normal«: Did you bring your hand sanitizer and facemask? Our life in times of COVID-19 - A global view on how the pandemic is affecting the economy worldwide: from Italy, the US to Brazil, South Africa or China Will the coronavirus crisis trump other urgent issues? The lockdown created funny behaviors: hoarding of toilet paper and DIY haircuts as well as video conferencing in sweatpants. Unfortunately, social isolation, fear of the future and economic losses due to short-time working are also part of our new everyday life. The crisis shows which professions are relevant for the economic system. Social imbalances and inequalities are becoming abundantly clear. At the same time, issues that demanded urgent action before the outbreak of the virus seem to be forgotten, like the refugee crisis, global warming and the world economic crisis. This cartoon book critically comments on the current situation and makes us rethink our priorities!

Book excerpt: Imagine a piece of technology so valuable that it turns the world's two most powerful lobbies – the oil industry and the arms trade – against one another. Yavlinsky, a brilliant Russian scientist has created a piece of wonder-technology; a drilling process that uses the forces of supercavitation. Named 'Version Thirteen', it enables oil explorers to take 40 per cent more oil out of the ground – it's worth trillions. But there's a problem. Supercavitation is also the basis for highly sophisticated weaponry – submarines and torpedoes that can travel at hundreds of kilometres per hour beneath the sea. Russian arms dealers have been selling this technology to Iran since the 1980s. If the revolutionary oil-drilling technology works, the weaponry is rendered useless. When Yavlinksy is found dead, the designs for the revolutionary drilling process are stolen or destroyed. Except one set of design plans does still exist. The one lodged in Samuel Spendlove's head. Spendlove, an Oxford academic now working as a spy, is the novel's hero. Blessed (or cursed) with a photographic memory, he suddenly finds himself the most wanted man in the world... The story of his pursuit takes us from the Middle East to Moscow to the Kamchatka peninsula, a land of no roads and many active volcanoes, one of the most remote and spectacular places on the planet. Fans of Robert Harris and Martin Cruz Smith will love Martin Baker. Combining painstaking research with the forensic storytelling skill of a Hollywood screenwriter, Version Thirteen marks the arrival of a master of the genre.
