Download or read book Papa's Baby written by Browne Lewis and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a child is conceived from sexual intercourse between a married, heterosexual couple, the child has a legal father and mother. Whatever may happen thereafter, the child’s parents are legally bound to provide for their child, and if they don’t, they’re held accountable by law. But what about children created by artificial insemination? When it comes to paternity, the law is full of gray areas, resulting in many cases where children have no legal fathers. In Papa’s Baby, Browne C. Lewis argues that the courts should take steps to insure that all children have at least two legal parents. Additionally, state legislatures should recognize that more than one class of fathers may exist and allocate paternal responsibility based, again, upon the best interest of the child. Lewis supplements her argument with concrete methods for dealing with different types of cases, including anonymous and non-anonymous sperm donors, married and unmarried women, and lesbian couples. In so doing, she first establishes different types of paternity, and then draws on these to create an expanded definition of paternity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuation of a groundbreaking study of the Rwandan genocide, and the story of the survivor generation In Rwanda from April to June 1994, 800,000 Tutsis were slaughtered by their Hutu neighbors in the largest and swiftest genocide since World War II. In his previous books, Jean Hatzfeld has documented the lives of the killers and victims, but after twenty years he has found that the enormity of understanding doesn’t stop with one generation. In Blood Papa, Hatzfeld returns to the hills and marshes of Nyamata to ask what has become of the children—those who never saw the machetes yet have grown up in the shadow of tragedy. Fabrice, Sandra, Jean-Pierre, and others share the genocide as a common inheritance. Some have known only their parents’ silence and lies, enduring the harassment of classmates or the stigma of a father jailed for unspeakable crimes. Others have enjoyed a loving home and the sympathies offered to survivor children, but do so without parents or an extended family. The young Rwandans in Blood Papa see each other in the neighborhood—they dance and gossip, frequent the same cafés, and, like teenagers everywhere, love sports, music, and fashion; they surf the Web and dream of marriage. Yet Hutu and Tutsi children rarely speak of the ghosts that haunt their lives. Here their moving first-person accounts combined with Hatzfeld’s arresting chronicles of everyday life form a testament to survival in a country devastated by the terrible crimes and trauma of the past.

Book excerpt: Daniel Bodenstein was a court reporter, not a homesteader. When his wife convinced him to settle along Bad River in western South Dakota, he grumbled incessantly about their new surroundings. As he raised his daughters along the muddy river as a bereaved widower, he took most of his complaints to God, and the solution was not at all what he expected. It was not a happy occasion that caused the family to move, and his daughters tangled romantic lives did nothing to add a sense of well-being to the family. Throw in a disheartened lawman, a sophisticated freight line owner, an ornery spotted horse, plus a bossy new friend, and you have a bubbling potful of aggravation, or at least it seemed that way to Daniel. And then there was the murdered homesteader. Who done it? The deceased man’s wife filed charges against a neighbor, and the case was heard in justice court, with Daniel as court reporter. All of which leads back to an ornery horse, a marriage proposal, and a novel full of twists and turns and unexpected events. Daniel’s sarcastic wit and searching prayers add additional flavor to this unusual novel. His reference to his Jewish background and his desire for Biblical truth follows him from Georgia to the vast prairie of South Dakota. Papa’s Girls mixes history and fiction, romance and calamity, everyday life with life threatening dilemmas, and portrays a family’s deep love and concern for one another. A delightful read!

Book Synopsis Life Lessons from My “Papa” by : Elizabeth Hugo
Download or read book Life Lessons from My “Papa” written by Elizabeth Hugo and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-11-20 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 1, 2010, Elizabeth Hugo’s life changed dramatically when her ninety-two-year-old father, Victor Mazzullo, moved into her home. Blind, diabetic, and suffering from dementia, her papa required total care for his every need. As her daily life drastically transformed, Elizabeth soon realized she would have to rely not only on herself, but also on her faith as she learned to listen for God’s guidance. In her inspirational memoir, Elizabeth shares poignant anecdotes and applicable Scriptures that provide insight into the challenges, joys, and frustrations that accompanied her spiritual journey caring for her father in his final years. As her role shifted from daughter to primary caregiver, Elizabeth recalls how she dealt with the subsequent emotional impact, realized her limitations, accepted help from others, and relied on prayer for strength. Buoyed through her struggles by her faith, Elizabeth learned how to walk through each day knowing she was just as needy and dependent on her “Papa” God for His love as her father was on her for his care. Written in devotional form, Life Lessons from My “Papa” shares practical tips, seasoned advice, and compassionate wisdom for any caregiver desiring inspiration.
