Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing the Spears of Change takes a close look at the extraordinary life of John Papa `Ī`ī. Over the years, `Ī`ī faced many personal and political changes and challenges in rapid succession, which he skillfully parried or seized, then used to fend off other attacks. He began serving in the household of Kamehameha I as an attendant in 1810, at the age of ten, and became highly familiar with the inner workings of the royal household. His early service took place in a time when ali`i nui (the highest-ranking Hawaiians) were considered divine and surrounded with strict kapu (sacred prohibitions); breaking a kapu pertaining to an ali`i meant death for the transgressor. He went on to become an influential statesman, privy to the shifting modes of governance adopted by the Hawaiian kingdom. `Ī`ī’s intelligence and his good standing with those he served resulted in a great degree of influence within the Hawaiian government, with his fellow Hawaiians, and with the missionaries residing in the Hawaiian Islands. As a privileged spectator and key participant, his published accounts of ali`i and his insights into early nineteenth-century Hawaiian cultural-religious practices are unsurpassed. In this groundbreaking work, Marie Alohalani Brown offers an elegantly written and compelling portrait of an important historical figure in nineteenth-century Hawai`i. Brown’s extensive archival research using Hawaiian and English language primary sources from the 1800s allows access to information which would be otherwise unknown but to a very small circle of researchers.

Rita's father was Herbert Reinecker, a prolific German novelist, dramatist, and screenwriter who lived in his own world of plot and dialogue. She grew up feeling not pretty enough for her father and not good enough for her mother. Her life revolved around her emotionally unavailable father, who blew in and out of her life. Rita longed for a normal family life, and the incessant hunger for acceptance left the growing girl wanting much more. Always looking for signs that her papa loved her, she lived on an emotional rollercoaster of hope and disappointment. Wanting only to be loved, Rita hurled herself into many relationships. Meanwhile, life with her controlling mother bred low self-esteem and self-doubt, leaving her feeling inadequate, unloved, and unwanted. Now, in her memoir, she recalls her lifelong search for her father's love and explores how she came to terms with its effects on her life.

Book excerpt: Instant New York Times, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and Wall Street Journal Bestseller! A powerful and unexpected memoir of family, faith, tragedy, and life's most important lessons. The day after future NBA superstar Chris Paul signed his letter of intent to play college basketball for Wake Forest, he received a world-shattering phone call. His grandfather, Nathaniel "Papa" Jones, a pillar of the Winston-Salem community where he owned and operated the first Black-owned service station in North Carolina, was mugged and ultimately died from a heart attack resulting from the assault. His funeral filled the largest church in the county, which held over one thousand people. He was sixty-one years old. The day after burying his grandfather, Chris was coping the best way he knew how: by playing basketball for his high school team. After pouring in shot after shot, his last attempt was an airball purposely flung out of bounds from the foul line before Chris exited the game. The next day, local news headlines declared that he fell six points shy of the statewide single game high school scoring record. But he accomplished exactly what he set out to do: scoring sixty-one points, one for each year of life lived by his grandfather. In Sixty-One, Chris opens up about life beyond basketball and the role his grandfather played in molding him into the man and father he is today. He’ll speak about the foundation of faith and family he built his life upon, what it means to be a positive light within your community and beyond, and the importance of setting the proper example for future generations. Most importantly, Chris will talk about his home, Winston-Salem, and the close-knit family and village that raised him to become one of the most respected leaders in all of sports.

Blind, diabetic, and suffering from dementia, her papa required total care for his every need. As her daily life drastically transformed, Elizabeth soon realized she would have to rely not only on herself, but also on her faith as she learned to listen for Gods guidance. In her inspirational memoir, Elizabeth shares poignant anecdotes and applicable Scriptures that provide insight into the challenges, joys, and frustrations that accompanied her spiritual journey caring for her father in his final years. As her role shifted from daughter to primary caregiver, Elizabeth recalls how she dealt with the subsequent emotional impact, realized her limitations, accepted help from others, and relied on prayer for strength. Buoyed through her struggles by her faith, Elizabeth learned how to walk through each day knowing she was just as needy and dependent on her Papa God for His love as her father was on her for his care. Written in devotional form, Life Lessons from My Papa shares practical tips, seasoned advice, and compassionate wisdom for any caregiver desiring inspiration.

Book excerpt: “Papa Goose is destined to become a classic. This book has everything in it I love: great animals beautifully portrayed as individuals; cool science; drama, discovery, and personal transformation.” —Sy Montgomery, author of Birdology and The Soul of An Octopus The charming true story of one man’s journey to raise seven goslings in the name of science. In Papa Goose, Michael Quetting shares the hilarious and moving true story of how he became a father to seven rambunctious goslings—and the surprising things he learned along the way. Starting right at the beginning, with the eggs, his journey takes him from the incubator all the way to the airstrip, where he must attempt to teach the geese to fly as part of an ambitious scientific research initiative for the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, which tracks animal migrations around the world. For the next eleven months, we follow the newly minted dad as he takes the goslings on daily swims in the lake, tracks them down when they go astray, and watches their personalities develop: feisty, churlish, and lovable. Packed with charm and humor, Papa Goose quickly draws us into the adventure as Gloria, Nemo, and the rest of the crew conquer land, water, and air.

Book excerpt: "About ten years ago, I inherited a bundle of love letters and diary notes written by my maternal grandfather, David Clarence Hurd. He composed these writings while living in Brooklyn, New York. "Papa", as my grandfather was lovingly called, was originally born in Brown's Town, St. Ann, Jamaica, West Indies on April 13, 1885. Beginning in October of 1913, Papa wrote to my grandmother, Avril Louise Cato, who lived in Port Antonio, Jamaica. Initially pen-pals, they wrote to each other for nearly a year. The pen-pal phenomenon was quite popular back then. Customarily, through letter writing a pen-pal connected with another to learn about his country, customs, and lifestyle. Some pen-pal relationships, like that of my grandparents, blossomed into blissful romance. Papa got to know his future bride through letter writing. After forming a loving bond built on trust and faith, Papa poured out his heart to Grandma. He sent many impassioned love letters. He proposed marriage in a letter. She accepted the proposal in a letter. They physically met each other for the first time on Tuesday, August 25, 1914 in Port Antonio, the day before their wedding ceremony."--Author, P. 9.

Book excerpt: PAPA is a Karen word for father. My father is known as Pastor Simon from Maela refugee camp; Rev. Dr. Simon who worked hard to educate young refugees, and who loved his Karen people and journeyed with them in a refugee camp as displaced people. In the 25 years our family lived in Maela refugee camp, Papa equipped many young leaders who are now Karen Baptist leaders around the world. The Karen diaspora expanded globally under the UNHCR Resettlement Scheme which began in 2004 to many countries including Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Finland, United Kingdom, and South Korea. Keen to maintain a global network of this diaspora, Papa was one of the founding fathers of the Global Karen Baptist Fellowship in 2007, serving in different executive positions to the time of his death. He passed away as a displaced person who carried no identity on 2 August, 2015. Though departed to his heavenly home, Papa is still very much loved and respected by people across the globe; his memory etched in the hearts of all knew him.

Book excerpt: "Why did Papa offer me to the Lord to become a preacher?" Samuel Grant wonders. "My brother Toby would be much better than me. Things come easier for him than they do me." His sister Hallie's confession to taking the red string off the wrist of the older brother when the twins were toddlers adds more confusion to Samuel's dilemma. Hallie doesn't know if she put the string back on the right brother's arm. Now what will happen? "Maybe I'm not Samuel. Maybe I can live a normal life and get married to Katrina." The brothers live in a state of uncertainty while waiting for their true identity to be uncovered. On the way to finding out which twin is the older one, the Grant siblings endure hair-raising experiences, such a helping birth a baby, concealing the mother's whereabouts, caring for the newborn until the mother decides what she'll do with the infant, and an impromptu wedding. These and more challenges strengthen the character of the young man who was actually offered to the Lord in Papa's Vow.
