Book excerpt: Fleeing the Corsair Coast, the fugitive sorcerer Dakuran El-Alamir and his companion Mikhael travel west towards the Plains of Madness in search of power. Seeking to unite the might of the Abyss with that of Pandemonium, Dakuran would rule the whole of the known world. Standing in his way, however, is the kingdom of the Eittendorfer and the fastness of Castle Wundigstein. Will the stone of Wundigstein and the mettle of those who defend it turn the chaotic tide that has been unleashed, or will the streets of this mighty fortress-city echo with the cries of daemons; a foretaste of the doom to come?

Book excerpt: As Earth breathed her last mankind finally began considering its future: could it survive off-world, and if so, where would it go and how would it get there? Fortunately United Industries, a trans-national corporation with a monopoly on deep space technologies, was on hand to provide its assistance, for those who could afford it. And so the great migration to New Earth was undertaken and the next chapter of mankind's history began, at least it was for those fortunate enough not to get left behind with their dying mother... Will mankind make the most of the fresh start that New Earth offers? What about those who were left behind? This first volume of short stories begins to answer these questions, and explores one possible future for mankind that lies beyond Earth. Dr S. Fern hails from the south east of England. Being inspired by the early fantasy and horror writers of the last century, his work tends not to follow the modern template for such work, often resulting in bizarre and sometimes macabre twists to his tales. www.drsfern.weebly.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the end of the nineteenth century a national musical consciousness gradually developed in the USA as composers began to turn away from the European conventions on which their music had hitherto been modelled. It was in this period of change that experimentation was born. In this book, the composer and scholar David Nicholls considers the most influential figures in the development of American experimental music, including Charles Ives, Charles Seeger, Ruth Crawford, Henry Cowell, and the young John Cage. He analyses the music and ideas of this group, explaining the compositional techniques invented and employed by them and the historical and cultural context in which they emerged.

Book excerpt: In 1917, the Germans launched a major air campaign against the British mainland, which shocked the whole nation and terrorized the southeast of England. These attacks by German bombers caused hundreds of deaths and injuries, but until now, the full details of these raids have NEVER before been told. These range from the massacre of Canadian troops resting in Folkstone on May 25, 1917, to the widespread carnage of shoppers a couple of miles away in the city center. Who is any the wiser that Sherness, then a major dockyard for the Royal Navy, barely escaped a similar fate when it too was singled out for the same treatment or that a 50kg bomb struck Upper North Street School in London's Poplar on June 13, 1917. It not only took the lives of 18 schoolchildren, many as young as 5 years, but also crippled and mutilated twice as many again. Terrible as this was, it was just one of scores of similar tragedies, which terrified the populace of London and horrified the world. The account of this campaign plus the political and military circumstances surrounding it, follows years of original and painstaking research, interviews and correspondence with those who remember that period.

Book Synopsis The Great American Novel by : Philip Roth
Download or read book The Great American Novel written by Philip Roth and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2022-09-21 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Pastoral—a richly imagined novel featuring America’s only homeless big-league baseball team in history delivers “shameless comic extravagance…. Roth gleefully exploits our readiness to let baseball stand for America itself" (The New York Times). Gil Gamesh, the only pitcher who ever literally tried to kill the umpire. The ex-con first baseman, John Baal, "The Babe Ruth of the Big House," who never hit a home run sober. If you've never heard of them—or of the homeless baseball team the Ruppert Mundys—it's because of the Communist plot, and the capitalist scandal, that expunged the entire Patriot League from baseball memory. In this ribald, wickedly satiric novel, Roth turns baseball's status as national pastime and myth into an occasion for unfettered picaresque farce, replete with heroism and perfidy, ebullient wordplay and a cast of characters that includes the House Un-American Activities Committee.
