Book excerpt: The Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) Framework is a World Health Assembly resolution adopted unanimously by all Member States in 2011. It brings together Member States, industry, other stakeholders and WHO to implement a global approach to pandemic influenza preparedness and response. The Framework includes a benefit-sharing mechanism called the Partnership Contribution (PC). The PC is collected as an annual cash contribution from influenza vaccine, diagnostic, and pharmaceutical manufacturers that use the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS). Funds are allocated for: (a) pandemic preparedness capacity building; (b) response activities during the time of an influenza pandemic; and (c) PIP Secretariat for the management and implementation of the Framework. This report presents overall success metrics and infographics to illustrate progress in PIP Framework implementation. A progress report is published four times a biennium, and covers technical and financial implementation for the PIP PC High-Level Implementation Plan II (HLIP II), as well as the PIP Secretariat. Milestones are reported every six months and indicators are reported yearly. All data are presented cumulatively from the beginning of each biennium, in this case, 1 January 2022.

This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the world continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, novel influenza viruses persist as a constant pandemic threat. The global response to COVID-19 has pushed the boundaries on what is possible for rapid pandemic response in several areas, including vaccine research, development, manufacturing, equitable distribution, allocation, and administration. If well understood and sufficiently adapted, these actions could be applied to future pandemic and seasonal influenza vaccine preparedness efforts. However, developing and delivering these more effective vaccines to meet the demand goes beyond simply technical challenges and includes issues across governance, financing, research, supply chain, and public engagement. To address these challenges, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a virtual public workshop in May of 2021 to discuss the emerging evidence on unprecedented actions related to COVID-19 that could inform and advance pandemic and seasonal influenza vaccine preparedness efforts and subsequent response. This Proceedings of a Workshop provides a high-level summary of the presentations and discussions that occurred during the workshop.

This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from both workshops.

Book excerpt: As the current H1N1 outbreak underscores, an influenza pandemic remains a real threat to our nation. Over the past 3 years, 12 reports have been issued and 4 testimonies to Congress have been held to help the nation better prepare for a possible pandemic. While a number of actions have been taken to plan for a pandemic, including developing a national strategy and implementation plan, many gaps in pandemic planning and preparedness still remain. This statement covers six thematic areas: (1) leadership, authority, and coordination; (2) detecting threats and managing risks; (3) planning, training, and exercising; (4) capacity to respond and recover; (5) information sharing and communication; and (6) performance and accountability. This book was released on 2010 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To address concerns and issues related to transportation and public health management of contagious individuals in the context of an influenza pandemic, the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center (AFHSC) and the Center for Disaster and Humanitarian Assistance Medicine (CDHAM) sponsored a one-day, Tri-Service workshop and tabletop exercise entitled "U.S. Military's Management of Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) and Beyond." A central focus of workshop presentations and discussions related to current USTRANSCOM policy on movement of highly contagious patients. This policy dictates that patients with known or suspected infection with a highly contagious disease will not be transported within the patient movement system, but rather will be treated "in place" or with minimal transportation to medical authorities. These include infections with any agent that could present a national security threat, require special public health actions, or potentiate public panic and social disruption. The "treat in place" approach may thus entail movement of medical resources to locations of need.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia Pacific Strategy for Emerging Diseases (APSED) was launched in 2005 as a common strategic framework for countries and areas of the region to strengthen their capacity to manage and respond to emerging disease threats, including influenza pandemics. Over the past five years, considerable progress has been made in the development and strengthening of the required core capacities. APSED 2010 will be implemented by building on the achievements of the original APSED, while recognizing variations in existing capacity levels across countries. It is intended that APSED 2010 will further support progress towards meeting International Health Regulations (2005) obligations and consolidate gains already made in establishing collective regional public health security. While APSED 2010 continued to focus on emerging diseases, it also seeks to maximize the benefits already achieved by widening its scope to include other acute public health threats and by identifying additional areas of synergy and special situations to which the Strategy can make important contributions. APSED (2010) seeks to provide a common framework for countries, WHO and partners to work together to enhance regional defence against public health threats.

Book excerpt: In the past half century, deadly disease outbreaks caused by novel viruses of animal origin - Nipah virus in Malaysia, Hendra virus in Australia, Hantavirus in the United States, Ebola virus in Africa, along with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), several influenza subtypes, and the SARS (sudden acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) coronaviruses - have underscored the urgency of understanding factors influencing viral disease emergence and spread. Emerging Viral Diseases is the summary of a public workshop hosted in March 2014 to examine factors driving the appearance, establishment, and spread of emerging, re-emerging and novel viral diseases; the global health and economic impacts of recently emerging and novel viral diseases in humans; and the scientific and policy approaches to improving domestic and international capacity to detect and respond to global outbreaks of infectious disease. This report is a record of the presentations and discussion of the event.
