Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the field of periodic pattern mining, reviews state-of-the-art techniques, discusses recent advances, and reviews open-source software. Periodic pattern mining is a popular and emerging research area in the field of data mining. It involves discovering all regularly occurring patterns in temporal databases. One of the major applications of periodic pattern mining is the analysis of customer transaction databases to discover sets of items that have been regularly purchased by customers. Discovering such patterns has several implications for understanding the behavior of customers. Since the first work on periodic pattern mining, numerous studies have been published and great advances have been made in this field. The book consists of three main parts: introduction, algorithms, and applications. The first chapter is an introduction to pattern mining and periodic pattern mining. The concepts of periodicity, periodic support, search space exploration techniques, and pruning strategies are discussed. The main types of algorithms are also presented such as periodic-frequent pattern growth, partial periodic pattern-growth, and periodic high-utility itemset mining algorithm. Challenges and research opportunities are reviewed. The chapters that follow present state-of-the-art techniques for discovering periodic patterns in (1) transactional databases, (2) temporal databases, (3) quantitative temporal databases, and (4) big data. Then, the theory on concise representations of periodic patterns is presented, as well as hiding sensitive information using privacy-preserving data mining techniques. The book concludes with several applications of periodic pattern mining, including applications in air pollution data analytics, accident data analytics, and traffic congestion analytics.

Book excerpt: Hiding in plain sight throughout America are historic, highly private women's self-education groups. These clubs are fascinating survivors from an era following the Civil War when women couldn't apply to most colleges and were told they shouldn't leave the home. In their earliest days, the study groups also contributed to the welfare of their towns - often by helping to found their town's first library-and served to get women out of the house and into the world. Today's all-women study clubs have no civic component but still fashion their meetings as their founding great-grandmothers did, with members taking turns giving original papers. In Smart Women, author Ann Dodds Costello discusses her four-year quest to locate, often visit, and describe today's 100-year-old, all-women study clubs, all over America, even though they do not publicize and have no central organization or knowledge of each other. Included: an invaluable, first-ever directory of most of the book's ninety-plus clubs.

Book excerpt: "At a time when each Society had its own medium of propogation of its researches ... in the form of Transactions, Proceedings, Journals, etc., a need was strongly felt for bringing out a journal devoted exclusively to the study and advancement of Indian culture in all its aspects. [This] encouraged Jas Burgess to launch the 'Indian antiquary' in 1872. The scope ... was in his own words 'as wide as possible' incorporating manners and customs, arts, mythology, feasts, festivals and rites, antiquities and the history of India ... Another laudable aim was to present the readers abstracts of the most recent researches of scholars in India and the West ... 'Indian antiquary' also dealt with local legends, folklore, proverbs, etc. In short 'Indian antiquary' was ...entirely devoted to the study of MAN - the Indian - in all spheres ... " -- introduction to facsimile volumes, published 1985.

Book excerpt: Not long after winning their independence from Mexico in 1836, Texans began clamoring for lighthouses. Hundreds of miles of barrier islands, shifting sandbars, and shallow bays made the Texas coast treacherous at a time when few overland routes provided access to the new republic. Beginning in 1852, twenty-eight lighthouses were built along the Texas coastline, on land and over water. Lighthouse service was often a family affair, with husbands, wives, and children working together as keepers and assistants. For nearly 70 years, construction continued as coastal erosion, hurricanes, and wars regularly damaged or destroyed those lighthouses already built. These sentinels of the sea lessened but did not eliminate the chance of shipwreck, so lifesaving stations, manned by able seamen with unsinkable surfboats, were established as well. As Texass lighthouses were gradually automated throughout the 20th century, many were sold to private owners or abandoned. Today, several have been restored, and twoat Aransas Pass and Port Isabelstill function as aids to navigation.--Amazon.come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is now called JCPenney, a fixture of suburban shopping malls, started out as a small-town Main Street store that fused its founder’s interests in agriculture, retail business, religion, and philanthropy. This book—at once a biography of Missouri farm boy–turned–business icon James Cash Penney and the story of the company he started in 1902—brings to light the little-known agrarian roots of an American department store chain. David Delbert Kruger explores how the company, its stores, and their famous founder shaped rural America throughout the twentieth century. “Most of our stores,” Penney explained in 1931, “are located in agricultural regions where the tide of merchandising rises and falls with the prosperity of the farmers.” Despite the growth of cities in the early twentieth century, Penney maintained his stores’ commitment to serving the needs of farmers and small-town folk. Tracing this dedication to Penney’s rural upbringing, Kruger describes how, from one store in the sheep-ranching and mining town of Kemmerer, Wyoming, J. C. Penney Co. became a familiar chain on Main Street, USA, purveying value, providing good jobs, and marking rites of passage in many an American childhood. Kruger paints a biographical and historical picture of an American business mogul distinctly different from comparable capitalists such as Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, or Sam Walton. Despite his chain’s corporate structure, Penney imbued each store with a Golden Rule philosophy that demanded mutual respect between customers, employees, competitors, suppliers, and communities. By tracing that spirit to its agrarian source, and following it through the twentieth century, J. C. Penney: The Man, the Store, and American Agriculture provides a new perspective on this American cultural institution—and on its founder’s unique brand of American capitalism.
