Book Synopsis Recuerdos by : Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo
Download or read book Recuerdos written by Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2023-03-02 with total page 1475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generation after the U.S. conquest of California, Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo set out to write the story of the land he knew so well—a history to dispel the romantic vision quickly overtaking the state’s recent past. The five-volume history he produced, published here for the first time in English translation, is the most complete account of California before the gold rush by someone who resided in California at the time. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (1807–90) grew up in Spanish California, became a leading military and political figure in Mexican California, and participated in some of the founding events of U.S. California, such as the Monterey Constitutional Convention and the first legislature. With his project, undertaken for historian and publisher Hubert Howe Bancroft, Vallejo sought to correct misrepresentations of California’s past, which dismissed as insignificant the pre–gold rush Spanish and Mexican periods—conflated into one “Mission era.” Instead, Vallejo’s history emphasized the role of the military in the Spanish colonization of California and argued that the missionaries after Junípero Serra, with their medieval ideas, had actually retarded the development of California until secularization in the early 1830s. Culture, he contended, was of intense interest to the Californio people, as was the education of children. His accounts of Indigenous peoples, while often sympathetic, were also characteristic of his time: he and other California military leaders, Vallejo maintained, had successfully subdued “hostile” Indians and established mutually beneficial relationships with others. Out of keeping with Bancroft’s American triumphalism, Vallejo’s monumental project was consigned to the archives. With their deft translation and commentary, Rose Marie Beebe and Robert M. Senkewicz—authors of a companion volume on Vallejo’s work—have brought to light a remarkable perspective, often firsthand, on important events in early California history. Their efforts restore a critical chapter to the story of California and the American West.
Download or read book Women Judges written by Ulrike Schultz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-14 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do women have equal chances in the judiciary? Although women have made their way into law faculties, in many countries of the world they still face drawbacks in judicial careers. This book delves into the different aspects of women at work in the judicial environment, focusing on judicial appointments, promotions, the glass ceiling and representation in high positions of the judiciary across international settings such as Nigeria, South Africa, Philippines, Turkey, Spain, and Northern Ireland. The contributions go beyond the classical career issues by digging into several questions related to women at work in the judicial environment, such as: Are women accepted by their colleagues and by clients at court – male and female? Do they get the recognition they deserve or is there indecent behaviour and discrimination against them? What about work-life balance? And how do women judges perceive their role? The book offers valuable insights by questioning and criticising the status quo, paving the way to a gender equal future in the judiciary. A significant new contribution to international scholarship in the field, this book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of the Legal Profession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his new collection of poetry, Ten Lepers and Other Poems: Exorcising Academic Demons, author Genaro Jesse Perez presents verses that explore a variety of topics, including both his experiences in academia and those of other people he has encountered in his more than thirty-five years as a professor. Other poems in the collection were inspired by the gospel of Luke and the angry God of the Old Testament as well. “Sleeping from Futility” examines how student evaluations now dictate who is good in the academic world and who is not, while the “Flood of Perdition” considers the way in which an unexpected death sentence of a young, beautiful student causes a man to rethink his allegiance to his wife of many years. Perez examines the challenges and pitfalls of the academic demons that exist in his life day in and day out. Ten Lepers and Other Poems resonates with the dilemmas encountered in a world many will never understand. Academic Demons Having received the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions and upon the full force that the enemies of truth and reason spawn, Nothing will harm me. I rejoice because my name shall be written in heaven. Woe to them who are to blame: They will fall like meteors from the academic welkin.

Book excerpt: Tracing My Roots in Guanajuato, Len, and Silaos Haciendas and Ranchos (17341945) outlines the steps the author took to research his fathers ancestors in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. One step involved him becoming a proficient reader of microfilm to study old church records from the comforts of a history center in McAllen, near his home in Laredo. Another took him to his fathers birthplace for the first time in 1992. The book also presents what the author yielded from his extensive research. At the center are two far-reaching genealogiesone of his grandfather Andrs Gonzlez, another of his grandmother Tomasa Daz. In his journey through their lineages, he met a parade of ancestors who lived their lives during different eras and locations in Guanajuato (mainly El Bajo). On occasion, these forefathers came face to face with historical figures, including Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.
