Book excerpt: The historical and geological record indicate that the earthquake hazard in south-western British Columbia is relatively high. This bulletin presents results of a major paleoseismological investigation consisting of several related interdisciplinary studies that extend the seismic record of the region into prehistory. Three introductory sections contain background material on the region's geologic and tectonic setting, earthquake sources, historical seismicity, and research methods used. This is followed by four sections summarizing paleoseismological research on the following indicators of possible past earthquakes: sea level changes, tsunamis and their deposits, liquefaction of ground, and landslides. The final sections are concerned with seismic hazards (ground motion, ground rupture, subsidence and flooding, tsunamis and seiches, liquefaction, landslides) and analysis of risk and recurrence of earthquakes.

Book excerpt: This carefully targeted and rigorous new textbook introduces engineering students to the fundamental principles of applied Earth science, highlighting how modern soil and rock mechanics, geomorphology, hydrogeology, seismology and environmental geochemistry affect geotechnical and environmental practice. Key geological topics of engineering relevance including soils and sediments, rocks, groundwater, and geologic hazards are presented in an accessible and engaging way. A broad range of international case studies add real-world context, and demonstrate practical applications in field and laboratory settings to guide site characterization. End-of-chapter problems are included for self-study and evaluation, and supplementary online materials include electronic figures, additional examples, solutions, and guidance on useful software. Featuring a detailed glossary introducing key terminology, this text requires no prior geological training and is essential reading for senior undergraduate or graduate students in civil, geological, geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. It is also a useful reference and bridge for Earth science graduates embarking on engineering geology courses.

Book excerpt: Did you know that the Grand Bank earthquake of 1929 triggered ahuge submarine mass movement which broke submarine cables over adistance of up to 1000 km from its source and generated a tsunamiwhich devastated a small village in Newfoundland killing 27 people? The same happened in Papua New Guinea in 1998 with more than 2000casualties. Submarine mass movements of various sizes and styles areshaping the sea floor and are of concern for many facets of humanactivities both onshore and offshore. These include the development ofnatural resources, energy and communication transport, coastalinfrastructures and communities. This book provides a world-wideperspective of submarine mass movements and their consequences. Thishas been made possible by assembling excellent contributions fromactive researchers, groups, or institutions, thus providing fullcoverage of the many scientific and engineering aspects of this typeof marine and coastal geo-hazard. It covers fundamental as well assite specific studies from many areas including the Atlantic andPacific oceans, inner seas like the Mediterranean Sea, and fjordsusing the most recent technologies from multibeam sonar imagingtechniques, 3D seismic analysis, slope stability analysis, to debrisflow and tsunami modeling."Audience: " This book is of interest to any researcher in thefield of marine and coastal geo-hazards. It will be useful forplanners, scientists and engineers involved in the development ofoffshore and near-shore resources and also to those in charge of themanagement and mitigation of coastal hazards. For graduate students, this book provides an up-to-date vision of the process of submarinemass movements and their consequences from both ascientific and anengineering standpoint, and it includes a unique collection of theexisting literature on marine geo-hazards."CD-Rom included" This volume contains a CD-Rom which in additionto an electronically searchable vers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews advances in understanding of the past ca. two million years of Earth history - the Quaternary Period - in the United States. It begins with sections on ice and water - as glaciers, permafrost, oceans, rivers, lakes, and aquifers. Six chapters are devoted to the high-latitude Pleistocene ice sheets, to mountain glaciations of the western United States, and to permafrost studies. Other chapters discuss ice-age lakes, caves, sea-level fluctuations, and riverine landscapes. With a chapter on landscape evolution models, the book turns to essays on geologic processes. Two chapters discuss soils and their responses to climate, and wind-blown sediments. Two more describe volcanoes and earthquakes, and the use of Quaternary geology to understand the hazards they pose. The next part of the book is on plants and animals. Five chapters consider the Quaternary history of vegetation in the United States. Other chapters treat forcing functions and vegetation response at different spatial and temporal scales, the role of fire as a catalyst of vegetation change during rapid climate shifts, and the use of tree rings in inferring age and past hydroclimatic conditions. Three chapters address vertebrate paleontology and the extinctions of large mammals at the end of the last glaciation, beetle assemblages and the inferences they permit about past conditions, and the peopling of North America. A final chapter addresses the numerical modeling of Quaternary climates, and the role paleoclimatic studies and climatic modeling has in predicting future response of the Earth's climate system to the changes we have wrought.

Book excerpt: Containing the papers from the 11th International Conference on Computer Simulation in Risk Analysis and Hazard Mitigation 2018, this book will be of interest to those concerned with all aspects of risk management and hazard mitigation, associated with both natural and anthropogenic hazards. Current events help to emphasise the importance of the analysis and management of risk to planners and researchers around the world. Natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, fires and others have always affected human societies. The more recent emergence of the importance of man-made hazards is a consequence of the rapid technological advances made in the last few centuries. The interaction of natural and anthropogenic risks adds to the complexity of the problems. The included papers, presented at the Risk Analysis Conference, cover a variety of topics related to risk analysis and hazard mitigation.
