Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 24 (thesis year 1979) a total of 10,033 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 215 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 24 reports these submitted in 1979, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

These data are advantageous as paleoclimate proxies, but records are sparse in high latitude waters, where calcareous microfossils are poorly preserved in marine sediments. Over glacial timescales, high latitude regions likely have the widest variability in terms of the [delta]18O values of marine waters; therefore, the paucity of data in these regions greatly hinders our ability to reconstruct global climatic and environmental change. This research is motivated to investigate Southern Ocean diatoms as a way to begin filling the gap in our knowledge. Diatoms are a cosmopolitan group of siliceous phytoplankton with characteristic ecological affinities. Diatom silica is increasingly being analyzed as a [delta]18O archive, and has the potential to provide comparable data to [delta]18O variations recorded by benthic foraminifera, but to date, studies have focused on Holocene sediments. This thesis presents oxygen isotope values from Early Pliocene Ross Sea diatoms, assessment of purification procedures, and implications for paleoclimate and the history of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. ANDRILL AND-1B is a 13 Ma record from the Antarctic Geologic Drilling Project in the Ross Sea, which provides Lower to Mid Pliocene diatomite units. The context provided by age models and paleoenvironmental studies, along with more geologically recent Southern Ocean diatom [delta]18O measurements, make AND-1B an ideal dataset for further exploring the use of diatom [delta]18O values as a record of changes in salinity and temperature in high latitude seawater. Samples were purified; geochemically and mineralogically assessed using x-ray diffraction (e.g. identification of amorphous opal-A vs. mineral contamination) and x-ray fluorescence (e.g. elemental quantification of clay contamination); then analyzed for [delta]18O values using a step-wise fluorination (SWF) -- CO2 laser heating technique and a Thermo MAT 253 isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Correction methods based on different assumptions place constraints on true diatom [delta]18O values, with margins of error dependent on final sample purity. The results are intermediate between Holocene Antarctic diatom [delta]18O studies, indicating that diatom [delta]18O values can remain largely or entirely unaltered for at least 4.5 Ma. Interpreting these values through the current paleotemperature model, with the contingent paleoenvironmental constraints afforded by AND-1B, suggests water [delta]18O values offset about -10% relative to today's ocean. Stacked benthic foraminifera [delta]18O values for the Pliocene suggest an ocean average less than 1% different than the present; therefore, this points to a strong component of glacial water in a warmer, fresher Pliocene Ross Sea.

Book excerpt: Synchronous deposition of carbonate and siliciclastic sediments occurred on the South Florida Platform during the late Oligocene to early Pliocene, producing a large number of complex mixed carbonate/siliciclastic lithologies, some perhaps unique to the region. All 14 defined subfacies contain a mix of carbonate and siliciclastic sediments along with phosphorite grains. Only a small percentage of the stratigraphic section contains sediments with a solely carbonate or solely siliciclastic composition. Transitions between subfacies are both transitional and abrupt. The hypothesis that carbonate and siiciclastic mixed sediment sequences show mostly abrupt boundaries (Mount, 1984) is not supported. Based on the interpretations of the depositional environments for the 14 subfacies found in the Hawthorn Group, the entire stratigraphic section was deposited on a ramp with a high percentage of the sediments containing a carbonate mud component. Homocinal ramp deposits are characterized by low, rather uniform slopes from shallow waiter into the basin with continuous grading of sediment types from nearshore sands to deep water sands and muds. Many described ramp deposits contain little or no mud in the open inner or outer ramp subfacies, such as the eastern Florida ramp, the current west Florida ramp, and other wave-dominated ramps, such as southern Australia, (James and Von der Borch, 1991); (James et al., 1994; Boreen and James, 1993). Modern ramp deposits bordering restricted water bodies, such as the Arabian Gulf, do contain a belt of muddy open-water inner and outer ramp deposits. Ancient epeiric sea ramp deposits also produced wackestone and mudstone deposits in the open shelf area. Therefore, the southern Florida ramp deposited during the late Oligocene to early Pliocene was more similar to a restricted-sea ramp than a wave-dominated ramp. A new chronostratigraphy was developed for the upper Paleogene and Neogene sediments on the central part of the South Florida Platform. The ages of the sediments were determined by the combined use of calcareous nannofossils, plank-tonic foraminifera, diatoms, strontium-isotope stratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, and carbon and oxygen isotope variations. Based on these integrated dating techniques, the following age constraints using the Berggren et al. (1995b) time scale were placed on the formations in this region: the Suwannee Limestone is constrained between 33.7 to 28.5 Ma, the Arcadia Formation of the Hawthorn Group is constrained from between 26.5 to 12.4 Ma, the Peace River Formation of the Hawthorn Group is constrained between 1 1 to 4.3 Ma, the Tamiami Formation is constrained between 4.29 to 2.15 Ma, and the Caloosahatchee Formation is constrained from 2.14 to 0.6 Ma. Eleven third-order sea-level events were recognized in the stratigraphic record between the late O]igocene and early Pliocene. With the exception of the early Miocene sea-level events, the remaining seven events corresponded closely in time with the global sea-level curve of Haq et al. (1988). However, the depth of flooding on the Florida Platform differed from the relative depths predicted by the Haq curve. During the late Aquitanian and Burdigalian, Haq observed three third-order sea-level events, but four events were recorded in the cores studied. Understanding Climate's Change on Human Evolution explores the opportunities of using scientific research to improve our understanding of how climate may have helped shape our species. Improved climate records for specific regions will be required before it is possible to evaluate how critical resources for hominins, especially water and vegetation, would have been distributed on the landscape during key intervals of hominin history. Existing records contain substantial temporal gaps. The book's initiatives are presented in two major research themes: first, determining the impacts of climate change and climate variability on human evolution and dispersal; and second, integrating climate modeling, environmental records, and biotic responses.
