Studies from embayed lakes along the east-central coast of Lake Michigan indicate that peaks in eolian sand within lake sediments correspond to climatic, sunspot, and lake-level fluctuations. The hypothesis tested herein is that the eolian sand signals from sediment within the Grand Mere Lakes, MI, which are downwind of sand dunes along southeastern coastal Lake Michigan, record the same climate history and lake-level fluctuations observed along the east-central Lake Michigan coastline. Sediment cores were extracted from the Grand Mere Lakes in Berrien County, MI, and analyzed for variations in weight percentage of sand with depth, the sand signal, at 1-cm sampling intervals. Radiocarbon dates obtained from terrestrial macrofossils within the cores were used to develop an age-depth model, from which sedimentation rates were derived, both for the varying lithologies and the entire core. Spectral analyses of the sand signal data using both the multi-taper and REDFIT methods indicate multiple periodicities that correspond to those from other regional and global studies, including Lake Michigan lake-level fluctuations, Lake Michigan coastal dune formation, and solar cycles. The tested hypothesis is accepted, and the common periodicities between the Grand Mere Lakes sand data and other studies suggest that this new dataset is not random, and is best explained as a record of paleodune mobility. The dataset is a paleorecord of wind or storminess experienced in the southern Lake Michigan basin and beyond, from the mid to late Holocene, and thus may be an effective proxy for paleoclimate in the southern Lake Michigan basin.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Stratigraphic Study of Beach Features on the Southwestern Shore of Lake Michigan: New Evidence of Holocene Lake Level Fluctuations This study of a beach ridge complex along the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan provides new evidence of long-term trends in water level fluc tuations of Lakes Michigan and Huron that are not discernible in the short, 125-year historic record of measured lake level changes. Radiocarbon age control of lake terraces and other beach features provided by dates from buried peat and fossil wood indicates that during the past years lake levels were markedly higher and lower than present levels for periods on the order of centuries. This suggests that historically recorded levels, con sidered high by modern standards, may represent a relatively low cycle on a naturally fluctuating trend. Study results thus have important implications for engineers and hydrologists concerned with planning and construction along the lake shore. The established geological history of the Great Lakes region recognizes three prominent lake stages in the postglacial Upper Great Lakes the Nipissing stage B. P. L, the Algoma stage and modern Lakes Michigan and Huron B. P. To present). The Nipis sing stage was initiated when differential isostatic uplift raised northern outlet channels above southern outlets, causing the lakes to rise and drain through preexisting late glacial outlets at Chicago and Port Huron, Michigan. Incision of the Port Huron outlet about B. P. Caused the levels of the lakes to drop to those of the subsequent Algoma stage; the Chicago outlet was abandoned. Renewed incision of the Port Huron outlet about B. P. Caused a final drop to the present level of Lakes Michigan and Huron. Results of the present study provide for a more detailed interpretation of these changes and indicate that conspicuous fluctuations of Lake Michi gan have occurred during the past years - a period previously recog nized as one of relatively stable levels. The Nipissing and the Algoma stages of the lakes have been defined here as high fluctuations of Lake Michigan separated by subsequent periods of low lake level. An earl y Nipissing stage fluctuation (nipissing attained an altitude of 783 m about b.p. A second Nipissing stage fluctuation (nipissing ll} reached an altitude of m about B. P. Temporal agreement with Holocene neog/acial and pollen records suggests that the Holocene levels of Lakes Michigan and Huron were climatically related to changes in water volume in these lake basins. Such fluctuations appear to have been superimposed on the dif feren tia/ isostatic uplift of the region and suggest that Nipissing and Algoma stage levels could not have been controlled solely by episodic incision of the outlet channel at Port Huron. Book excerpt: Paleoclimate records across mid-latitude North America indicate a continuously changing hydroclimate during the Holocene. However, spatial differences in the hydroclimate history between regions like the mid-continent coastal and northeast United States raises questions about the timing and directions of change in the Southern Great Lakes region. Here, I present ground penetrating radar (GPR) and sediment core analyses from two small lakes in southern Michigan and central Pennsylvania to constrain the extent of late-Pleistocene and Holocene droughts. Sedimentological analyses at Lake Lavine, Michigan, indicate lower than modern water levels before the late-Holocene, particularly during the late-Pleistocene and five particularly dry portions of the Holocene from 9.9–9.8, 8.1–6.6, 6.1–5.4, 5.1–4.9, and 4.7–4.6 ka. Similar analyses at Sunfish Pond, Pennsylvania, also indicate that the lake was higher during the late-Holocene than earlier periods with a severe dry phase from 5.5–4.3 ka nearly desiccating the mountain-top lake as part of an event that extended from Wisconsin to Massachusetts. Two earlier high-water phases at Sunfish Pond possibly coincided with Heinrich Stadial 1 (16.1 ka) and the Younger Dryas (12.4–11.6 ka). The evidence of hydroclimate change highlights the potential influences of the Laurentide Ice Sheet and North Atlantic variability on moisture availability across large portions of eastern North America that produced both spatially-extensive, long-term trends and regionally-varying multi-century fluctuations.

Three factors, glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), outlet conveyance, and climate processes contribute to natural rises and falls in LGL lake level over geologic time. Studying the natural history of prehistoric lake levels preserved in coastal landforms helps determine the context of current lake levels and predict potential future lake level changes. Detailed records of lake level change during the late Holocene are preserved in strandplains of beach ridges. Each beach ridge forms as a result of a lake level rise and fall over many decades and preserves a record of relative lake level elevation at the time of deposition. Multiple beach ridges within a single strandplain contain an account of relative lake level changes over the past 4,500 years. This study examined beach ridges in the Ipperwash strandplain, southern Lake Huron, that uniquely preserves natural lake level fluctuations at the only unregulated outlet in the LGL, the Port Huron/Sarnia outlet of Lake Michigan-Huron, which is particularly susceptible to natural lake level flucuations. The Ipperwash strandplain is the closest strandplain with the most number of beach ridges to the Port Huron/Sarnia outlet and therefore best records natural lake level fluctuation experienced at the Port Huron/Sarnia outlet of Lake Michigan-Huron. The study of the Ipperwash strandplain beach ridges used many methods to derive measured elevations and modelled ages of ancient lake levels. Elevation data is combined with age data to create the Ipperwash paleohydrograph. Thirty-six basal foreshore elevations were used to reconstruct the elevation of ancient lake levels. Elevation data shows an oscillatory lake level fall from a maximum elevation of 181.0 m to a minimum elevation of 177.8 m. Ten optically stimulated luminescence ages were used to create a linear age model of the Ipperwash strandplain. The resultant age model shows a maximum age of 3520 years ago and a minimum age of 710 years age. The multi-millennium trend shows a net linear fall at an average rate of 7 cm/century for the entire Ipperwash paleohydrograph. This trend is interpreted as a record of the rate of GIA at Ipperwash relative to Lake Michigan-Huron's outlet. The multi-millennium trend suggests the rate of GIA at Ipperwash is 7 cm/century; however, estimates of GIA based on water gauge data suggest the rate of GIA at Ipperwash is 0 cm/century. This discrepancy could result from an underestimation estimated from contoured water level gauge data for the rate of GIA at Ipperwash, erosion at the Port Huron/Sarnia outlet during the deposition of the Ipperwash strandplain and/or the Chicago outlet being dominant during the deposition of the Ipperwash strandplain. The multi-millennium trend may also be expressed as two millennium trends shown as two vertically offset phases of lake-level lowering from 3520 to 2180 years ago and 2020 to 710 years ago. These age ranges correspond with the Algoma and 1700-high lake level phases in Lake Michigan. Millennium patterns at Ipperwash corresponds to regional climate records and may represent a climate signal. However, the rate of linear lake level lowering for the older lake level phase at Ipperwash corresponds with the difference in rates of GIA, based on water gauge data, between the Chicago outlet and the Ipperwash strandplain. Therefore, the millennium trends may represent either natural climate change or the abandonment of the Chicago outlet of Lake Michigan-Huron. Detailed sedimentologic and lake level records at the Port Huron/Sarnia and Chicago outlets are needed to resolve this controversy. Centennial lake level fluctuations represent rises and falls in lake levels lasting an average of 208 years ± 114 years with an average amplitude of 0.8 ± 0.4 m about the linear millennium trends. The average timing of the centennial lake level fluctuation at Ipperwash are similar to centennial lake level fluctuations found in Lakes Superior and Michigan-Huron that are interpreted to represent climate driven lake level fluctuations. Multi-decadal lake level fluctuations cause a single Ipperwash strandplain beach ridge to form average every 73 ± 35 years. The subsurface stratigraphy of Ipperwash beach ridges shows a similarity of other LGL beach ridges which are interpreted to form as a result of a climate driven lake level fluctuations over many decades. The Ipperwash paleohydrograph provides the context needed to adjust all strandplain data in Lake Michigan-Huron to resolve basin-wide relative lake level changes related to GIA, outlet conveyance, and climate. In addition, the Ipperwash paleohydrograph suggest lake-level may rise and fall on a multi-decadal time scale contributing to erosion and setting the stage to create a new beach ridge, assuming the rate of sediment supply is maintained.
