Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Murzuq Basin is a large intracratonic sag basin located in southwestern Libya. Exploration efforts started in this vast and remote Saharan region already in 1957 and 60 exploratory wells have been drilled to date, resulting in over 20 discoveries with around 4,000 million barrels of oil in place. Most discoveries have been made in Ordovician sandstone reservoirs sourced by hot shales of the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation. Oil is already being produced and exported from the area, but the basin's total hydrocarbon potential is still poorly understood. Recent exploration - especially the major discovery and initial development of the Giant "Elephant" Field - has greatly increased interest for the area's potential. Many petroleum geologists and companies now believe that the basin may well develop into a new major hydrocarbon province which will significantly contribute to Europe's energy needs in the next decades. This book presents papers from a conference held at Sebha University - on the eastern margins of the Murzug Basin - in September 1998.The book continues an ongoing series of presentations of the geology of Libya, but the 25 contributions herein mostly centre on the Murzuq Basin itself and on nearby areas. There are still many unresolved questions in terms of geological and hydrocarbon exploration in these difficult desert areas, but the papers herein will hopefully present a first comprehensive overview of an exciting frontier exploration region. About half of the papers are directly related to hydrocarbon exploration, and to source rock and reservoir development, but a wide variety of other features are also described, ranging from palaeontology and biostratigraphy to ore geology and water resources, covering the entire geological column from the Precambrian to the Holocene. The book concludes with a bibliography covering all geological aspects of this challenging but very promising frontier area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a compilation of 17 seminal papers, taken from various Geological Society Special Publications and the Journal of the Geological Society, on the use and application of stratigraphy in petroleum geology over the last 20 years. The volume focuses on case studies in fundamental stratigraphy, applied and integrated stratigraphy and alternative methods of stratigraphy. The book is introduced with an original scientific and historical review of the subject: all papers are set in context with both the benefits of the techniques and some of the short-comings highlighted. By compiling these papers, commercial stratigraphers John Gregory, Philip Copestake and Julian Pearce have created a volume intended for a wide readership. However, it is of particular relevance for the training of undergraduate students studying courses on petroleum geology, basin development and sequence stratigraphy as well as for all postgraduate students working in petroleum-related scientific fields. It is also intended as a volume of general use for geoscientists entering the petroleum industry, as well as current workers requiring an overview.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, recognition of the potential role of large igneous provinces in affecting ocean and atmosphere systems and biotic evolutionary pathways has lead to increased interest in this province. This has been further stimulated by the expansion in the search for oil and gas in Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments along the NE Atlantic Margin. An improved understanding of the interaction between igneous and sedimentary processes is vital for the identification of potential hydrocarbon resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quartz is the major porosity-reducing cement in many sandstonesequences. Therefore, Quartz cements represent a key source ofpetrographic and geochemical information about diagenetic history. They are also the major determinant of sandstone reservoirquality. While the ultimate goal of research in this area is to makerobust predictions about the amount and distribution of quartzcements in a wide variety of depositional and burial settings, there are nevertheless large areas of the subject that are poorlyunderstood and remain the subject of controversy. The aim of this Volume, which is based partly on paperssubmitted to a 1996 workshop in Belfast, and partly on invitedcontributions, is to bring together some of the main strands ofresearch into quartz cements and provide a focus for debate anddirection for future research. This book will be welcomed by sedimentologists, petrographersand geochemists involved in sandstone digenesis, as well as bypetroleum geologists seeking a deeper understanding of the factorsinfluencing reservoir porosity and permeability. Contributors from 11 countries and 4 continents. Represents the benchmark in quartz cement research. Book excerpt: Reservoir quality of Rotliegend sandstones is mainly controlled by their permeability, and porosity, and their mechanical properties. Thus, diagenetic porosity-reducing processes need to be understood to evaluate reservoir quality and geotechnical properties in sandstones. Best reservoir qualities are achieved in mature sandstones with large amounts of quartz cementation. The relative length of grain-contacts compared to the respective grain diameter is identified as proxy for rock strength.

Book excerpt: Palaeomagnetism is a technique used to understand complex deformation patterns in fold-and-thrust belts; it can be used to characterize the distribution, magnitude and timing of vertical axis rotations, an elusive variable using other methods. A combination of palaeomagnetic and structural geology analyses has helped to unravel the geometry and kinematics of fold-and-thrust belts around the world and of different geological ages for more than 50 years. This volume comprises three sections: the first shows thorough overviews of western Mediterranean arcs and the western Carpathians; the second depicts several examples from the Andes, the Alps, Anatolia, Pyrenees, Iberian Ranges and the Atlas; and the third shows the latest research on the use of palaeomagnetism to understand fold-and-thrust belts in 3D and 4D in a more quantitative way and it also includes some methodological proposals to avoid common errors. In the papers of the first two sections, the combination of palaeomagnetic analyses with structural data, AMS or magnetostratigraphic analyses demonstrate the usefulness of palaeomagnetism in deciphering complex deformation patterns in fold-and-thrust belts.

Book excerpt: Ernie Rutter has made, and continues to make, a significant impact in the field of rock deformation. He has studied brittle and plastic deformation processes that occur within both the oceanic and continental crust, as well as other key properties such as the permeability and seismic velocities of these rocks. His approach has been one that integrates field observations, laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses. This volume celebrates Ernie's key contribution to rock deformation and structural geology by bringing together a collection of papers that represent this broad approach. The papers within the volume address key issues that remain within these fields. These range from fundamental studies of brittle and plastic behaviour along with the resultant structures and microstructures from both the field and laboratory, to applied problems where a better understanding of the deformation and properties of the crust is still needed.
