Book excerpt: For a couple of decades before World War II, a group of immigrant painters and sculptors, including Amedeo Modigliani, Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine and Jules Pascin dominated the new art scene of Montparnasse in Paris. Art critics gave them the name "the School of Paris" to set them apart from the French-born (and less talented) young artists of the period. Modigliani and Chagall eventually attained enormous worldwide popularity, but in those earlier days most School of Paris painters looked on Soutine as their most talented contemporary. Willem de Kooning proclaimed Soutine his favorite painter, and Jackson Pollack hailed him as a major influence. Soutine arrived in Paris while many painters were experimenting with cubism, but he had no time for trends and fashions; like his art, Soutine was intense, demonic, and fierce. After the defeat of France by Hitler's Germany, the East European Jewish immigrants who had made their way to France for sanctuary were no longer safe. In constant fear of the French police and the German Gestapo, plagued by poor health and bouts of depression, Soutine was the epitome of the tortured artist. Rich in period detail, Stanley Meisler's Shocking Paris explores the short, dramatic life of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Julius Mordecai Pincas (1885-1930) was a Bulgarian who set out on a wild and adventurous journey to Vienna, the Habsburg capital. After art school, he set off for Munich and Berlin before settling down in Paris in 1905 and painting under the name of Pascin. Over 1907 to 1930, Pascin exhibited in Berlin, Paris, New York at fairs such as the 1911 Berlin Secession en 1911 and the 1913 Independants and Autumn salons as well as at Bernheim and other leading private galleries. Indeed, he spent most of his time travelling Algeria, Cuba, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and the USA where he took out citizenship in 1920. He hanged himself on June 2, 1930, only a year before major retrospective exhibitions of his works in New York and Paris. Today, Pascin still stands out as a ""bad boy."" His canvasses are as turbulent as his lifestyle, full of parties and places the affluent patronize but never mention in polite society - those brothels and cabarets where slightly clad ladies hosted the pillars of the community. Pascin was as brilliant at the easel as the drawing board but is all too easily overlooked, perhaps because he lived in the shadow of contemporaries Picasso, Modigliani and many many more.

A specialist of the feminine form, his canvasses are as tormented as his party lifestyle. The artist, considered scandalous for the erotic character of his works, exhibited in numerous Salons, notably in Berlin, Paris, and New York.

Book excerpt: Featuring a broad selection of paintings, sculptures and photographs coming mainly from the Centre Pompidou collections, Louvre Abu Dhabi’s exhibition catalogue “Rendezvous in Paris: Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani & Co.” focuses on this highly distinctive period in French art when young painters, sculptors and photographers flocked to early-20th-century Paris from all over the world to make a decisive contribution to the city’s art scene. Most notably from Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia and even Japan, these formally inventive artists – Constantin Brancusi, Marc Chagall, Kees van Dongen, Tsuguharu Foujita, Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso among them – who would later become known as the “School of Paris”, rivalled the greatest French artists of the time.

The naked body in art has been with us since the earliest examples of Greek art and sculpture. The creation and display of such works of art has always inflamed opinion and today, even withour supposed relaxation of the codes of behaviour surrounding nudity, such images are considered provocative, dangerous, and are often unwelcome in the public sphere. Now - focusing on the last 150 years of western art, these debates are finally explored in an imaginative and engaging way using the latest research and analysis into this and related subject areas - by a woman.

There he started painting signing Pascin, and soon became part of the École de Montparnasse and its cosmopolitan blend of outstanding names. His canvases are as turbulent as his lifestyle, and he still stands out as a bad boy. Pascin hang himself on June 2nd, 1930, despite the first fruits of success his work had collected. This book aims at taking a more comprehensive approach on his work and style than critics usually do.
