Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A sly, companionable collection” (New York Times Book Review) that offers indispensable truths from a master of contemporary poetry. In this meditative and incisive collection, Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Dunn draws on themes of morality and mortality to explore the innermost machinations of human nature. Shifting in tone but never wavering in their essential honesty, these poems reflect on desire, restraint, and the roles we play in an ever-evolving society. A stunning sequence on the relationship between the speaker and “Mrs. Cavendish” examines an intimacy sustained and repelled by politics, philosophy, and attraction. Wide-ranging, intellectually daring, and wry, Pagan Virtues reminds us of Dunn’s penetrating eye for the universal and the specific, and his ability to highlight our contradictions with tenderness and wit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1462 Pope Pius II performed the only reverse canonization in history, publicly damning a living man. The target was Sigismondo Malatesta, Lord of Rimini and a patron of the arts with ties to the Florentine Renaissance. Condemned to an afterlife of torment, he was burned in effigy in several places in Rome. What had this cultivated nobleman done to merit such a fate? Pagan Virtue in a Christian World examines anew the contributions and contradictions of the Italian Renaissance, and in particular how the recovery of Greek and Roman literature and art led to a revival of pagan culture and morality in fifteenth-century Italy. The court of Sigismondo Malatesta (1417–1468), Anthony D’Elia shows, provides a case study in the Renaissance clash of pagan and Christian values, for Sigismondo was nothing if not flagrant in his embrace of the classical past. Poets likened him to Odysseus, hailed him as a new Jupiter, and proclaimed his immortal destiny. Sigismondo incorporated into a Christian church an unprecedented number of zodiac symbols and images of the Olympian gods and goddesses and had the body of the Greek pagan theologian Plethon buried there. In the literature and art that Sigismondo commissioned, pagan virtues conflicted directly with Christian doctrine. Ambition was celebrated over humility, sexual pleasure over chastity, muscular athleticism over saintly asceticism, and astrological fortune over providence. In the pagan themes so prominent in Sigismondo’s court, D’Elia reveals new fault lines in the domains of culture, life, and religion in Renaissance Italy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Minnis argues that the paganism in Troilus and Criseyde and The Knight's Taleis not simply a backdrop but must be central to our understanding of the texts. Chaucer's two great pagan poems, Troilus and Criseyde and The Knight's Tale, belong to the literary genre known as the `romance of antiquity' (which first appeard in the mid 12th century), in which the ancient pagan world is shown on its own terms, without the blatant Christian bias against paganism characteristic of works like the Chanson de Roland, where the writer is concerned with present-day rather than classical forms of paganism. Chaucer's attitudes to antiquity were influenced, but not determined, by those found in the compilations, commentaries, mythographies and history books which we know that he knew. These sources illuminate the manner in which he transformed Boccaccio. Much modern criticism has concentrated on the medieval veneer of manners and fashions which are ascribed to the heathen protagonists of Troilus and The Knight's Tale; Dr Minnis examines the other side of the coin, Chaucer's historical interest in cultures very different from his own. The paganism in these poems is not mere background and setting, but an essential part of their overall meaning.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of poems that, I hope, will share some of my feelings on my path in life and provide some education to those who know little of Paganism in general and Wicca and Witchcraft in particular. I started writing poetry because I heard of what happened to an American girl by the name of Tempest Smith. I hope the poems that I have written will help in some small way to ensure that something like that never happens again.

Book excerpt: The Oak Grove is a collection of poems covering a variety of subjects. Taking the reader from the forest to the ocean, from deep winter to summer, it includes verses that show the raw emotions brought on by the abuse of Mother Earth. Other poems, such as "Morning Walk with Her," are deeply spiritual. The reader will also find poetry that tells of some of the difficulties that many pagans face in today's society as they follow their much-misunderstood religion. The Oak Grove also includes two longer, humorous poems. "Jest" uncovers the mystery of a court jester found dead in the roof rafters, minus his hose! "Besom Riding Blues" is a lighthearted romp featuring a naughty young witch whose flying antics leave a lot to be desired. This book is for those who love life, nature and care about our Mother Earth.

Book excerpt: This little work is a fine collection of poetry for those interested in the same; with a pagan twist, involved with love, love loss, death, and the celebration of life in general. Some of the poems venerate nature in a quasi-worshipful sense, as tends to be the case in neopaganism as well.At once entertaining and therefore spiritually useful, "Poems of Paganism" is of potential use for the more artistic spiritual occultist.
