Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... VIII AS PIANIST The critic who would give a true appreciation of Paderewski as artist must at once admit that he has the power of moving an audience as no pianist since Rubinstein has been able to move it. In the opening chapter I touched on some generalities with regard to Paderewski's position in the world of piano-playing, and I referred to the modifications in the verdict of the general which the critic must make. In the difference between his outlook and the public's will be found his divergence from the critical and popular estimation in which the great pianist is held. I will at once confess that a professional critic is apt to be too theoretical in his judgments: it is, if viewed aright, the defect of his merits. We are compelled to give reasons for our likes and dislikes, and these in turn are apt to proceed too much from the intellect and not sufficiently from the emotions. The public, on the other hand, has no hard-and-fast theories concerning piano playing, singing or conducting. Provided an instrumentalist or a conductor creates a "sensation" no close inquiry is made into a sacrifice of artistic virtue. In the following appreciation of Paderewski as pianist I have been at pains to collate my own opinions with those of men who have, it seems to me, some authority to write on the subject. I may say in passing that it is extraordinary how little of the criticisms penned on the different recitals give the reader any clear and general idea of Paderewski. His interpretations and playing are praised or blamed, but a writer in a daily paper has to take it for granted that the pianist's gifts and limitations are known and understood. Indeed, a journalist who should sit down to pen a general criticism of a celebrated artist would be...

Book excerpt: From silent cinema pianist born in the Australian Bush to celebrity virtuoso entertaining Royalty in Mayfair--an extraordinarily magical and inspirational musical odyssey. The concert pianist Edward Cahill (1885-1975) rose to prominence from humble beginnings in the inauspicious setting of 19th-century rural Queensland. At a time when Australian concert artists were virtually unknown in Europe, he dazzled the salons of royalty, aristocratic patronage and privilege in London, Paris and the French Riviera during the glittering decades of the 1920s and 1930s ... 'With what vigour, what virtuosity and poetry this master plays the piano!' --Chronique musicale, Montreux, 5 May 1939

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger has always called forth superlatives from those who have fallen under its spell. Toscanini wanted to lay his baton down for the last time only after he had conducted a performance of it. Paderewski called it 'the greatest work of genius ever achieved by any artist in any field of human endeavour.' H.L. Mencken declared, 'It took more skill to plan and write it than it took to plan and write the whole canon of Shakespeare.' And yet Wagner's many-splendoured comedy has come under severe criticism in recent years for what has been called its 'dark underside,' its 'fascist brutality,' and its 'ugly anti-Semitism.' In Wagner and the Wonder of Art, renowned opera expert M. Owen Lee addresses that criticism. He also provides an introduction to the opera and an analysis that will surprise even those veteran operagoers who may not have explored the work's intricate structure and the emotional drama at its centre. The book includes the on-air commentary that Father Lee gave during the first radio broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera after the events of 9/11. He thought it necessary, after attempting to refute the charges leveled against Wagner's opera, to say something about its truthfulness, its life-affirming music, its insight into the madness that can destroy human lives, and its witness to the importance of art for the survival of our civilizations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paderewski: The Story of a Modern Immortal It is difficult to write of Paderewski without emotion. States man, orator, pianist and composer, he is a superlative man, and his genius transcends that of anyone I have ever known. It has been my privilege to have many opportunities to fathom the man, and to look into the windows of a great soul. I have never found him guilty of an unworthy act. In inter national negotiations affecting the very life of his country and mine, it was enlightening to watch him overcome the opposition of those who tried to check the restoration of Poland. It was here that he appeared to best advantage. Time and again he brought to bear on those who represented the World Powers, the full force of his marvelous personality. After finishing his work at the Peace Conference, Paderewski returned to Warsaw, and, as Prime Minister, welded together the new Poland. When this had been successfully accomplished, he went back to that kingdom of which he had been so long master, and received a welcome which must have touched and gladdened his heart. Absence in another field of endeavor had in no way lessened his musical genius, and his triumph was one of the most remarkable incidents in his career. The statesman, the executive, the diplomat and orator were now merged in the artist, the composer and the poet. Again the magic of his hands stirred the hearts of his audiences to rapture and to tears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "I have undertaken merely to give a sketch of the work my husband did for his country during the years of the great war, to tell the motives and impulses which animated him, to explain to his friends throughout the world how it came that he abandoned his art and his career to plunge into politics and to indicate how little he regards the sacrifice he has made.... I simply know that he has given to Poland the best that was in him and more than that can be asked of no man."
