Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The colonial era in Africa, spanning less than a century, ushered in a more rapid expansion of Islam than at any time during the previous thousand years. In this groundbreaking historical investigation, Brian J. Peterson considers for the first time how and why rural peoples in West Africa "became Muslim" under French colonialism.Peterson rejects conventional interpretations that emphasize the roles of states, jihads, and elites in "converting" people, arguing instead that the expansion of Islam owed its success to the mobility of thousands of rural people who gradually, and usually peacefully, adopted the new religion on their own. Based on extensive fieldwork in villages across southern Mali (formerly French Sudan) and on archival research in West Africa and France, the book draws a detailed new portrait of grassroots, multi-generational processes of Islamization in French Sudan while also deepening our understanding of the impact and unintended consequences of colonialism.

This new version contains additional annotated bibliographies of the various denominational schools as well as discussing governmental relation to each setting in the years from 1985 to 1992. This version also covers Greek Orthodox and Muslim schools that were not part of the previous volume and includes a chapter on the growth of home schooling which is often influenced by religion. Finally, unlike the previous edition, this book only considers religious schools, rather than the religious aspect or function of public schooling. Each section includes a short chapter followed by an extensive annotated bibliography making it a useful source for anyone looking for information in the area.

Known for both wisdom and overwork, he was president of three colleges at once, and founded or laid the groundwork for four (Union, Walla Walla, Newbold, and Avondale). He started out as a journalist. With a first-class education from Dartmouth, W.W. Prescott was soon editing a successful newspaper. The call to shepherd Battle Creek College involved a major pay cut. But over time he reshpaed the church's educational system and politics. Holding 11 different offices simultaneously, he initiated curriculum reforms (less classics, more Bible) that met with strong opposition. His organizational reforms triumphed in 1901. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their beginnings, campuses emerged as hotbeds of traditions and folklore. American college students inhabit a culture with its own slang, stories, humor, beliefs, rituals, and pranks. Simon J. Bronner takes a long, engaging look at American campus life and how it is shaped by students and at the same time shapes the values of all who pass through it. The archetypes of absent-minded profs, fumbling jocks, and curve-setting dweebs are the stuff of legend and humor, along with the all-nighters, tailgating parties, and initiations that mark campus tradition—and student identities. Undergraduates in their hallowed halls embrace distinctive traditions because the experience of higher education precariously spans childhood and adulthood, parental and societal authority, home and corporation, play and work. Bronner traces historical changes in these traditions. The predominant context has shifted from what he calls the “old-time college,” small in size and strong in its sense of community, to mass society’s “mega-university,” a behemoth that extends beyond any campus to multiple branches and offshoots throughout a state, region, and sometimes the globe. One might assume that the mega-university has dissolved collegiate traditions and displaced the old-time college, but Bronner finds the opposite. Student needs for social belonging in large universities and a fear of losing personal control have given rise to distinctive forms of lore and a striving for retaining the pastoral “campus feel” of the old-time college. The folkloric material students spout, and sprout, in response to these needs is varied but it is tied together by its invocation of tradition and social purpose. Beneath the veil of play, students work through tough issues of their age and environment. They use their lore to suggest ramifications, if not resolution, of these issues for themselves and for their institutions. In the process, campus traditions are keys to the development of American culture.
