Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pacific Coast Survey of 1849 and 1850 Mcarthur was sent to the Naval Hospital at Norfolk, and while recovering, courted and married Mary Stone Young, on May 3, 1838. His wife was the daughter of Lieutenant John J. Young, at that time superintendent of the Naval Hospital. During the next two years he saw service on various vessels, and on September 24, 1840, was ordered to the brig Consort, detailed to the Coast Survey. The cruise lasted over a year, and during that time a survey was made of the Gulf of Mexico. From that time on his work was almost entirely with the Coast Survey, duty calling him to nearly every nook and corner of his country's coast line. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Pacific Coast The purpose of the present work is to treat of the vast region of the Pacific Coast of North and South America as a physical and political entity, seen from the point of view of the observant traveller from jour neys extending over a number of years: a task never perhaps attempted before. The excellent recep tion accorded to my former travel books, dealing with some of the States of South and North America, is borne out by the pile of favourable reviews and of numerous letters from readers at home and abroad which I have; and the several editions which have been reached in a short space: and these seem to offer a measure of popularity for the present work. To those (few) reviewers who have objected to intimate descrip tions I would reply that these books, having at base a geographical purpose, are written to interest the ordinary reader and student of trav'ei-lgre, rather than for the scientist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rovings in the Pacific, From 1837 to 1849, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Glance at California The author's days, it will be seen, have been passed, not in the idealities of life, but in its downright rough realities; and he is not without hope that this simple record of his experience may stimulate many a youth, whose energies are lying dormant for want of a field for their exertion in this densely peopled country, to seek, in the Isles of the Pacific, the home and the adventurous career which he is sure to find there, if he faint not. Should this be the case, the principal end which the author had in view, by publishing these notes, will be fully attained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Surveys Across the Continent, in 1867-'68, on the Thirty-Fifth and Thirty-Second Parallels, for a Route Extending the Kansas Pacific Railway to the Pacific Ocean at San Francisco and San Diego It should be remarked, furthermore, that although much of the country covered by these surveys had been previously exa mined with great fidelity by topographical engineers of the army, those explorations - made with barometer and viameter - could not, of course, claim the accuracy of measurements made with the chain and level. Besides, many developments have been made throughout this region, in the fifteen years that have elapsed since the period of the Government Surveys for a Pacific Railroad, which throw new light upon the ques tion of routes in every respect. Once a term incognita, there is now no longer any necessity for vague estimates or surmises. An amount of carefully gleaned information has been obtained, sufficient to admit of correct deductions upon all points of im portance. Our own surveys have extended over every season of the year - crossing the most mountainous regions in the coldest and warmest, and the most arid plains in the dry as well as the wet season; while the alternate lines and side explorations cover a belt wide enough to acquaint us with the topography and resources of a large extent of tributary country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address on the Subject of a Surveying and Exploring Expedition to the Pacific Ocean and South Seas: Delivered in the Hall of Representatives on the Evening of April 3, 1836 Believing that it is the sacred duty of every member of society to contribute, according to his possessions, to the general treasury of knowledge, I have come, on this occasion, to cast in my mite; happy that I have something to offer, and humble that the offering is of no greater value. At an early period of my life I imbibed a relish, perhaps acci dentally, for books of voyages and travels, when I had not as yet seen the ocean. Though a dweller in the western forests, I could reason from effects to causes, and needed only the roughly sketched history of the early settlement of our country to convince 'me, that the maritime enterprise of our ancestors was an important element in the foundation of our subsequent power; and that whatever tended to increase the stimulus to exertion, and extend the field of commercial research, was to add more to our national resources, than to discover mines of diamonds, or heap our trea suries with coined gold. The analogy of the sister branches, agriculture and manufactures have come to our aid; and if when fields are run out, the farmer is obliged to till new ones; and if when markets fail, the ingenuity of the manufacturer is tasked to find others, surely be who can indicate to our rapidly increasing marine a new and untried sea, or an undiscovered island, where enterprise may be enriched, and the country acquire a footing, deserves well of his fellow-men. To California and the Pacific Coast The promises made by the writer when the invitation was extended were more than kept. And at the Farewell! At the Oakland Mole. There was an increase rather than a decrease of enthusiastic appreciation. It was then that the writing of a book descriptive of the trip was suggested. And the pleasant task fell into my hands. The 1910 trip, as was that of 1896. Was planned by the Southern Cali fornia Hotel Association, under the presidency of John S. Mitchell. Of the Hollenbeck and the Alexandria. But, as is well known in our State. And growing to be well known throughout the country. California is a unit in working for its own welfare and. Therefore. The California Hotel Asso ciation, of San Francisco. Was asked to join with the Southern California Hotel Association in extending the invitation. Exactly as they did on the former occasion. Although San Francisco was still working strenuously to completely recover from the disastrous effects of the tragedy of 1906, she responded with her usual cordiality and vim. And the result was the invitation was extended by the two associations that the annual meeting be held in Los Angeles in 1910. And entertainment be extended throughout the State to San Francisco. The invitation was duly accepted. And we have yet to hear of one person who has regretted it. The results. Better than any words of mine. Show how successfully everything was done. Nothing was forgotten no one was ignored, everyone and everything was attended to. So that the program went through without a hitch.
