Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ozanam: In His Correspondence The priest spoke of him not only as a model to be imitated, and a patron to be honored, but already a protector to be invoked, if not in public, at least in the secret of one's heart, He honoured him as the principal founder of the Society, a fact which has been ac credited to him already by tradition, the universal voice which is not deceived. He expressed the general desire of Conferences for the day on which, with the sanction of the Church, it would be given to them to worship him solemnly in public.i Examining the condi -l tions required by the Church for such elevation, the venerable preacher gave it as his opinion that they were admirably fulfilled by the life and the doctrine and the good works of that just man by a life of piety and innocence, by a doctrine Of propaganda of faith by good works of corporal and spiritual amelioration, which have together made him an incomparable apostle of truth and charity in the world. The same address did not hesitate to describe the Society of St. Vincent de Paul as an Association of piety no less than a Congregation of Charity. Now, the preacher asks himself, when, within the Church, a Christian Society has sent its roots deep down into souls, and spread afar its branches laden with fruit when it draws its sap from a pure and intense religious life, is one not right in concluding that that Society is of God, that the heart from which it sprang was filled with God, and that the brow of the founder is worthy to bear the aureola The vitality and the efficacy of his action are the guarantee and the consecration of his virtues. Book excerpt: Fridiric Ozanam is probably best known as the founder of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, an association of charity that has spread throughout the world. More importantly, however, he lived in fidelity to God's grace as a Catholic layman -- a loving husband and devoted father, a distinguished writer, and a man who actively practiced the works of mercy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raymond Sickinger’s biography of Antoine Frédéric Ozanam is more than a chronological account of Ozanam’s relatively brief but extraordinary life. It is also a comprehensive study of a man who touched many lives as a teacher, writer, and principal founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Ozanam’s life encompassed a particularly turbulent time in French history, and he was a witness to two major political upheavals—the overthrow of the Bourbon dynasty that brought Louis Philippe to power in 1830, and the end of Louis Philippe’s “Bourgeois Monarchy” as a result of the 1848 Revolutions. This book examines Ozanam’s life in a number of ways. First, it explores the various roles he played throughout his life—son, sibling, student, member of and an inspiration for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, spouse and father, scholar, and spokesperson for the common people. Second, it examines the lessons he learned in his life, including the importance of friendship, the meaning of solidarity, and the role and purpose of suffering, among many others that he shares with those who study his thought and work. It concludes with an account of Ozanam’s enduring legacy. Antoine Frédéric Ozanam feared that he would not have a fruitful career, but his legacy remains a powerful testimony to his greatness. This book will interest scholars wishing to know more about Ozanam and the period in which he lived, as well as a wider audience, including those who are aware of or are members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multiauthor book celebrates the bicentenary of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), founded by St. Eugène de Mazenod, and arises from an international conference on French spiritual traditions hosted by the Oblates in San Antonio, Texas, in November 2016. More broadly, this book aims to make available to a wide readership the riches of the important family of French spiritual traditions originating between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries—not least the emphasis on mission to the poor. French traditions have been greatly underestimated in conventional histories of Christian spirituality, but their spiritual wisdom offers much to today’s believers.
