Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford: A Poem "Oh! none whose souls have felt a mighty name Thrill to their centre with its sound of fame, Whose hearts have warmed at wisdom, truth, or worth, And all that makes the heaven we meet on earth, Can tread the ground by genius often trod, Nor feel a nature more akin to God!" A Third edition of the present Work having been required, the Author has endeavoured to correct some inaccuracies which prevailed in the first, and to remove those verbal innovations "quas aut incuria fudit, Aut humana parum cavit natura." The writer needs no oracle to remind him of the many imperfections in this work which yet remain; or to convince him how unequal it is to the dignity and interest of his subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxford Year: And Other Oxford Poems About half the compositions in this volume have appeared in various periodicals, chiefly the Oxford Magazine and the old Oxford Review in the days when it was a weekly and not a daily paper. Certain allusions may perhaps be a little obsolete to the present generation, such as that, for instance, to the 'blue testamur.' But in all these cases it has been thought better to leave the verses as they were originally written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If you in courtesy should look With favour on its pages claim The title deed and write your name Here on this page. To you who know The glamour of the passing show, Sublime and sordid, trivial, great, But life, - this book I dedicate. As casual lookers-on we meet Here at some corner of the street. It's good to know you see it too, Smile, sigh and wonder when I do; That you discern the crooked jest Of contrast 'twixt our worst and best, Humour is ever friendship's test. I like to know you hear the call Of all things sad, neglected, small; Thrill to the magic of the wind, Love country, town and your own kind, Sinners and saints and sea and sky Just as they are, for so do I. Then let this book I fain would mend Be yours, my friend. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At Oxford: And Other Poems At Oxford Autumn again at winter's call is speeding, Decking her path with crimson and with gold. Her ripened fruit she gathers, little heeding All we had hoped for when the year grew old. Yonder round pinnacle and tower wheeling The rooks make brief and melancholy call; And softly, as some secret grief revealing, The robin sings from ivy-clustered wall. To-morrow sees our tide of life returning, Flooding old ways anew with eager youth; Hope, strength, ambition, resolution burning To have the mastery in strife for truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Poetry I met a sage at the break of day, And he welcomed me with a smile; He spoke his words of encouragement And we parted after a while. I met a fair lady when all was bright, And the sun was burning on high; She turned to me with her deep, dark eyes And sold herself for a lie. I met a child when the world was dark And I was drear and alone; The child spoke naught; But the dark became light; The day of glory had come. The barren ground shone with splendour high, Bare branches dripped with gold, And the earth was transformed to heaven, Just as the sage foretold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Lectures on Poetry The words Poetry for poetry's sake' recall the famous phrase 'art for Art.' It is far from my purpose to examine the possible meanings of that phrase, or all the questions it involves. I propose to state briefly what I understand by Poetry for poetry's sake, ' and then, after guarding against one or two misapprehensions of the formula, to consider more fully a single problem connected with it. And I must premise, without attempting to justify them, certain explanations. We are to consider poetry in its essence, and apart from the flaws which in most poems accompany their poetry. We are to include in the_idea of poetry the metrical form, and not to regard this as a mere accident or a mere vehicle. And, finally, poetry being poems, we are to think of a poem as it actually exists; and, without aiming here at accuracy, we may say that an actual poem is the succession of experiences - sounds, images, thoughts, emotions - through which we pass when we are reading as poetically as we can.1 Of course this imaginative experience - if I may use the phrase for brevity - differs with every reader and every time of reading: a poem exists in innumerable degrees. But that insurmountable fact lies in the nature of things and does not concern us now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Of the Greek and Latin love poets, Propertius (c. 50-10 B.C.) is one of those who holds the most immediate appeal for the twentieth-century reader. His helpless infatuation for the sinister figure of his mistress Cynthia forms the main subject of his poetry, and is analyzed with a tormented but witty grandeur in all its changing moods--from ecstasy to suicidal despair. This study includes English verse translations of his work, along with a chronology, explanatory notes, and a brief bibliography.

If we begin then I am glad of it, As a man kindling a wrought-silver lamp And casting perfumes in it might be glad. And if we make an end, I am glad too As a man might be laying down his book And knowing a fair tale has been well told. Supposing We Had Gone Down Supposing we had gone down into the dark Under the fascinating swirl of waves, Would you have given it me to clasp you round Before the sea-gulls came to kiss your eyes, And came long-fingered crabs to feast with you, And was no further talk of our desire Except the tide had made it musical Bone upon bone of us a little while? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Poetry: 1914-1916 Here is another book of Oxford poetry, the harvest of the year 1914, and I am invited to do what I can to give the poets that which poets so often need, an introduction to readers. You therefore that are readers, I charge you, read this book. You are free to praise or censure, so you will only read. Your love and your hate are welcome; what we cannot away with is that air of superiority and indifference which, in our opinion, sits so ill on you. Many of you read the newspapers; have you no ears for news except such news as is dead and rotten the morning after its birth? What we offer you is as fresh as the latest tidings concerning Kings and Cabinets, with this difference in our favour, that our news is new yesterday, to-day, and tomorrow; it will keep its sweetness when your far-fetched and dear-bought importations have gone to dust. Can you taste nothing but what trembles on the verge of decay? Will you listen to no speaker unless he screams and dies? It is characteristic of your odious self-sufficiency that you do not answer questions like these. I am in no mind to keep on asking you, "Are you there?" Perhaps you arc not even reading this preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
