Download or read book The Clayton Collection written by Frances Claire McIntosh and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeology of Roman Britain, Volume 1 This book examines the archaeological material from Hadrian's Wall within the significant Clayton Collection. The Collection was formed through the work of John Clayton, antiquarian and landowner, in the 19th century. His work took place at a pivotal time in the study of Hadrian's Wall, as public interest was growing, access was improving, and the discipline of archaeology was developing. As part of a large network of antiquarians, Clayton excavated, studied and published his discoveries. After his death, his archaeological estate was retained, and the Collection was moved into a museum in 1896. Despite being in the public domain for so long, the material has never been studied as a whole, or in the light of its 19th century creation. This work is the first to bring together the history and development of the collection alongside the material itself. It offers an insight into how important antiquarian collections can provide valuable information about Roman life.

Book excerpt: Joanna Denny, author of Anne Boleyn, reveals another sensational episode in Tudor history - illuminating the true character of Katherine Howard, the young girl caught up in a maelstrom of ambition and conspiracy which led to her execution for high treason while still only seventeen years old. Who was Katherine, the beautiful young aristocrat who became a bait to catch a king? Was she simply nave and innocent, a victim of her grasping family's scheming? Or was she brazen and abandoned, recklessly indulging in dissolute games with lovers in contempt of her royal position? Joanna Denny's enthralling new book once again plunges the reader into the heart of the ruthless intrigues of the Tudor court - and gives a sympathetic and poignant portrait of a girl tragically trapped and betrayed by her own family.

Download or read book Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain written by D. F. Mackreth and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of forty years of study, this book offers an overview of the most common find, after coins, on sites in Roman Britain, the brooch. Used basically to hold outer clothing together, it was always on view and was usually decorative. Based on the study of some 15,000 specimens, the second volume illustrates some 2,000, all drawn by the author. The first chapter is a discussion of manufacturing techniques, methods of study and the concept of dating. The bulk of the book consists of nine chapters examining in detail the myriad style of brooches from the second century B.C., when the habit of wearing brooches really took off, to the early fifth century A.D. when newcomers brought their own types of brooch and imposed them on the rest of what was to become England. The final chapter is a synthesis of various strands mentioned in the body of the book and the social implications of the great change in brooch wearing which occurred in the third century.
