She's the go-to girl for other entrepreneurs, handling all the tasks they dread. Social media posts? She's got it. Website updates? She's on it. Light bookkeeping? She loves it. Thank goodness Rachel’s about to get a reprieve, as her former in-laws plan to whisk her boys away for a summer of fun at the family lake house. But when her ex backs out at the last minute, she finds herself in a pickle. Even though she's drowning in to-dos, she's horrible at saying no—especially when it comes to providing some stability for her kids. In this, his second of a three-part series, Robert shares the emotions, mistakes and often excruciating steps necessary to find, and eventually embrace, that place of “wholeness.”

Book excerpt: Set in Chicago, The Exchange, A Planet Girl Adventure, is a fictionalized version of the 2008 economic meltdown that marked a turning point in the U.S. economy. The events that transpired during this time period collapsed the housing market, drove the economy into a ditch and increased the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet to lofty levels that have only gained momentum over the next decade. The stories of the main characters — a syndicated newspaper astrologer and her assistant; an exotic dancer; a trader; a mobster and a prominent government head — weave together a fictional alternative tapestry, illustrating the underbelly of the machinations in the world of high finance.

Book excerpt: Written by a group of nationally-recognized physicians, Evaluation of the Sexually Abused Child, 2E is a comprehensive and authoritative resource that provides a step-by-step discussion of how to interview and clinically evaluate suspected child sexual abuse cases. The contributors draw on their extensive experience to provide sensitive and practical guidance on psychological aspects of abuse, conducting the medical interview and physical exam to make a diagnosis, sexually transmitted disease, and the role of the physician in court. This new edition includes updated information on lab techniques, revised protocols for intervention programs, and a host of new data from several recently released longitudinal studies that followed abused children into adolescence and adulthood. A key feature of the first edition, a photographic atlas documenting and classifying ambiguous signs of abuse, has been expanded by more than 40% to incorporate new photos on the sexual abuse of adolescents, patterns of healing trauma, and additional examples of normal variations and medical conditions.

Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s, after the Indochina Wars, a shortage of men meant that many single women in Vietnam found themselves without suitable marital prospects. A number of these women chose to pursue single motherhood by “asking for a child” (xin con)—asking men to get them pregnant out of wedlock. Xin con appeared to be a radical departure from traditional Vietnamese kinship values and practices, which were based in Confucian patriarchal and patrilineal reproductive interests. However, this innovative solution was rooted in both pre- and postwar values, practices, and notions of gender, kinship, love, and sexuality. This ethnography explores the practice of xin con among single mothers in the postwar era and today, and considers the ways their reproductive agency was embraced rather than rejected by the Vietnamese state as it entered the global market economy. Rather than condemning or trying to restrict older single women’s reproductive agency, government officials enacted policies that would accommodate both the women and the state—a strategy that represents an intriguing alignment of Confucian heritage, Communist ideology, and governing tactics and demonstrates the social power of women.

This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful and humane exploration of the history of the "insanity defense," through the story of one poignant case. When a three-year-old child was found with a head wound and other injuries, it looked like an open-and-shut case of second-degree murder. Psychologist and attorney Susan Vinocour agreed to evaluate the defendant, the child's mentally ill and impoverished grandmother, to determine whether she was competent to stand trial. Even if she had caused the child's death, had she realized at the time that her actions were wrong or was she legally "insane"? What followed was anything but an open-and-shut case. Nobody's Child traces the legal definition of "insanity" back to its inception in Victorian Britain nearly two hundred years ago, from when our understanding of the human mind was in its infancy, to today, when questions of race, class, and ability so often determine who is legally "insane" and who is criminally guilty. Vinocour explains how "competency" and "insanity" are creatures of a legal system, not of psychiatric reality, and how, in criminal law, the insanity defense has to often been a luxury of the rich and white. Nobody's Child is a profoundly dignified portrait of injustice in America and a complex examination of the troubling intersection of mental health and the law. When prisons are now the largest institutions for the mentally ill, Vinocour demands that we reckon with our conceptions of "insanity" with clarity, empathy, and responsibility.

There they meet Quentin and Brix Eiger. Handsome, glamorous, a wealthy entrepreneur, Quentin sweeps Claire into his fast-lane fashionable world, while his temperamental son, Brix, engages Emma in her first love affair. Suddenly Claire and Emma are living in the glittering, colorful world of wealth and power. But inside the rainbow, all is not what it seems…
