Book Synopsis Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation by : Ben Collen
Download or read book Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation written by Ben Collen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the impacts of anthropogenic activities increase in both magnitude and extent, biodiversity is coming under increasing pressure. Scientists and policy makers are frequently hampered by a lack of information on biological systems, particularly information relating to long-term trends. Such information is crucial to developing an understanding as to how biodiversity may respond to global environmental change. Knowledge gaps make it very difficult to develop effective policies and legislation to reduce and reverse biodiversity loss. This book explores the gap between global commitments to biodiversity conservation, and local action to track biodiversity change and implement conservation action. High profile international political commitments to improve biodiversity conservation, such as the targets set by the Convention on Biological Diversity, require innovative and rapid responses from both science and policy. This multi-disciplinary perspective highlights barriers to conservation and offers novel solutions to evaluating trends in biodiversity at multiple scales.

Book Synopsis Evaluating Climate Change Action for Sustainable Development by : Juha I. Uitto
Download or read book Evaluating Climate Change Action for Sustainable Development written by Juha I. Uitto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a Creative Commons license. This authoritative book presents the ever progressing state of the art in evaluating climate change strategies and action. It builds upon a selection of relevant and practical papers and presentations given at the 2nd International Conference on Evaluating Climate Change and Development held in Washington DC in 2014 and includes perspectives from independent evaluations of the major international organisations supporting climate action in developing countries, such as the Global Environment Facility. The first section of the book sets the stage and provides an overview of independent evaluations, carried out by multilateral development banks and development organisations. Important topics include how policies and organisations aim to achieve impact and how this is measured, whether climate change is mainstreamed into other development programs, and whether operations are meeting the urgency of climate change challenges. The following sections focus on evaluation of climate change projects and policies as they link to development, from the perspective of international organisations, NGO’s, multilateral and bilateral aid agencies, and academia. The authors share methodologies or approaches used to better understand problems and assess interventions, strategies and policies. They also share challenges encountered, what was done to solve these and lessons learned from evaluations. Collectively, the authors illustrate the importance of evaluation in providing evidence to guide policy change to informed decision-making.

Book Synopsis Mid-term evaluation of the project “The coastal fisheries initiative global partnership” by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Mid-term evaluation of the project “The coastal fisheries initiative global partnership” written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many coastal fisheries are poorly managed and overexploited, resulting in suboptimal yields and lost revenue, and damage to other species and habitats. The Coastal Fisheries Initiative (CFI) is a global effort between FAO and other development partners to address these issues in a holistic and integrated way. It aims to work at a practical level with selected fisheries and to facilitate a global exchange of experience and learning. The CFI comprises subsidiary regional projects in Indonesia, Latin America and West Africa, a sustainable investment support project, and a global partnership and coordination project. The mid-term evaluation of the global coordination project found that, while the initiative is extremely relevant, it has so far had limited impact of a strengthened global partnership. The evaluation recommended greater coordination between the subsidiary projects, a strengthened reporting structure and a project extension of up to two years.

This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the aim of enhancing nutrition sensitivity in Global Environment Facility (GEF) investments and programming, this guidance note is based on a review of 12 purposively selected GEF-6 and GEF-7 projects within the FAO portfolio identified as having the potential to be nutrition-sensitive. Following an agrifood systems approach, the guidance note provides a list of potential opportunities for action that could be considered in GEF project design to ensure nutrition gains are achieved as co-benefits alongside the formally set global environmental benefit (GEB) targets. The note is the result of the collaboration between the Food and Nutrition Division of FAO and the FAO OCB-GEF Coordination Unit.

Book Synopsis Terminal evaluation of the areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) Tuna project, part of the "Global sustainable fisheries management and biodiversity conservation in ABNJ" by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Terminal evaluation of the areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) Tuna project, part of the "Global sustainable fisheries management and biodiversity conservation in ABNJ" written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marine areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) comprise 40 percent of the earth’s surface, covering 64 percent of the surface of the ocean and 95 percent of its volume. The Common Oceans ABNJ Programme (2014-2019) was implemented by FAO as a concerted effort to bring stakeholders to work together to manage and conserve the world’s common oceans. The ABNJ Tuna project, one component of the Common Oceans ABNJ Programme, promoted important transformational changes in the management practices of tuna fisheries, improving their sustainability, strengthening Marine Stewardship Council capabilities of tuna regional fisheries management organizations (t-RFMOs) and their members, and significantly reducing their impact on biodiversity. The project generated knowledge but lacked a structured mechanism and strategy to harvest and disseminate it. Similarly to the programme level evaluation report, the programmatic approach component, the partnership framework, as well as how to foster synergies among projects and capitalization of knowledge management should be strengthened.

Book Synopsis Terminal evaluation of the project “Sustainable management of bycatch in Latin America and Caribbean trawl fisheries” (REBYC-II LAC) by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Terminal evaluation of the project “Sustainable management of bycatch in Latin America and Caribbean trawl fisheries” (REBYC-II LAC) written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project “Sustainable management of bycatch in Latin America and Caribbean trawl fisheries” was financed by GEF, implemented and executed by FAO. With an overall evaluation rating of Highly Satisfactory, the assessment has identified notable results in strengthening regional collaboration, improving legal frameworks and co-management mechanisms; successful trials of bycatch reduction devices; and building capacity, including of women. The global environment objective (GEO) and the project development objective (PDO) were partially achieved, reflecting the over-ambitiousness of the design. However, the enabling environment created, and the transformational results will contribute towards achievement of these objectives in the long-term. Strategic partnerships and the high level of stakeholder engagement including the private sector contributed to successful delivery. Recommendations include actions to be taken by the project partners and stakeholders to build on the project results to achieve sustainable, long-term impact; thematic areas for follow-up projects; more realistic project objectives and improvement in institutional arrangements and administrative procedures for future projects; sustaining partnerships; enhancing livelihoods and empowerment of women fish workers; and better communication and knowledge management.
