Book excerpt: Why Not? After all, no-one had ever done it before. It would be one of the longest of all overland journeys – half way round the world, from the English Channel to Singapore. They knew that several expeditions had already tried it. Some had got as far as the desrts of Persia; a few had even reached the plains of India. But no one had managed to go on from there: over the jungle clad mountains of Assam and across northern Burma to Thailand and Malaya. Over the last 3,000 miles it seemed there were ‘just too many rivers and too few roads'. But no-one really knew … In fact, their problems began much earlier than that. As mere undergraduates, they had no money, no cars, nothing. But with a cool audacity, which was to become characteristic, they set to work – wheedling and cajoling. First, they coaxed the BBC to come up with some film for a possible TV series. They then gently persuaded the manufacturers to lend them two factory-fresh Land Rovers. A publisher was even sweet-talked into giving them an advance on a book. By the time they were ready to go, their sponsors (more than 80 of them) ranged from whiskey distillers to the makers of collapsible buckets. In late 1955, they set off. Seven months and 12,000 miles later, two very weary Land Rovers, escorted by police outriders, rolled into Singapore – to flash bulbs and champagne. Now, fifty years on, their book, ‘First Overland', is republished – with a foreword by Sir David Attenborough. After all, it was he who gave them that film.

Book excerpt: From the scorching deserts of Western Australia to the harsh vastness of Mongolia, Overland is the true story of a journey from Sydney to Switzerland without flying. It is a funny and honest account of rewarding successes and frustrating failures. It is also a vivid illustration of modern Asia and the people who live there: young Indonesian fishermen, backpackers and a slow train through southern Burma; eating grubs in Thailand and an armed confrontation in Laos; lullabies from middle-aged Chinese businessmen and a cold night on the Great Wall of China; encounters with wolves and reindeer herders in Mongolia; thieves, nomads, Russian scientists; and one ancient, stubborn motorcycle travelling through the world's wild places.

Book excerpt: Although accounts of overlanding expeditions had been publishedpreviously, Browne points out in his Preface that a specific guide was still lacking: The object of this book is to give a true and graphic account of the trade of S2OverlandingS3 as carried out in the Australian colonies. The author has tried to set before the reader a fair sketch of the S2OverlanderS3 himself, his occupation, his difficulties, and the people he employs however small its merits, it may at any rate obtain some credit for novelty, as he believes it to be a subject as yet never touched upon. S3 Brownes book, a practical guide to herding cattle and sheep through rough terrain in Australia, is filled with valuable advice for adverse local conditions. Overlanding in Australia covers all aspects of the trade, from dingo attacks to the laws of branding and ownership of stock. The author discusses the use of dogs in controlling stock on the move, pastures in Australia, surviving drought and special problems posed by crossing rivers and losing sheep in the bush. Of special interest is a discussion of (sometimes tense) relations between squatters and stockmen moving cattle across the landscape.

Book excerpt: A powerful memoir about an epic bike race across one of the most challenging landscapes in the world. Rupert Guinness set out on the trip of a lifetime: to race across Australia in the inaugural Indian Pacific Wheel Race. This would be no ordinary bike race. Unlike the Tour de France, which Guinness made his name reporting on for decades, competitors would ride completely unassisted from Fremantle in Western Australia to the Opera House in Sydney on the other side of the country – a gruelling distance of over 5,000 kilometres that would not only test riders’ physical endurance but their psychological resilience as well. Dubbed ‘The Hunger Games on Wheels’, there would be no help, just riders and their bikes crossing one of the most beautiful – and most inhospitable – places on earth. Rupert’s mission was to test his own grit, physical and emotional, as he followed the trail of the pioneering men and women whose historic rides over the last two centuries unveiled a largely unknown interior. But when a terrible tragedy stopped competitors in their tracks, Rupert was forced to make one of the toughest decisions he had ever faced – and ultimately, what he discovered was the extraordinary power of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: Searching for even more wild places and new experiences, Dan became determined to explore 'off the map' in Africa. From the mighty Sahara Desert in the north to the dense equatorial jungles of the Congo and the open grasslands of Southern Africa, Dan turned his biggest dream into reality. Over the course of three years Dan's second major expedition spanned fifty-four thousand miles through thirty-five unique African countries. THE ADVENTURE WAS A THOUSAND TIMES BIGGER THAN HE DREAMED POSSIBLE. After exploring the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Argentina Dan became hooked on the freedom of global overland travel, and he only wanted more. New languages, exotic foods, stunning landscapes and local people with an entirely different outlook became Dan's everyday life. As the months turned into years, through highlights and despair Dan gained a new appreciation for what it truly means to be alive. Viewing our modern world through African eyes gave Dan a new perspective, and he was pulled in by the endless joy, laughter and kindness at every turn. While the landscapes and wildlife are undeniably breathtaking, it is the natural warmth of the African people that is truly unforgettable. All across the continent Dan was welcomed with love and generosity, and now he will never be the same.

Book excerpt: When Dan set out to drive his Jeep from the Northern tip of Alaska to Tierra del Fuego on the Southern tip of South America, he had no idea how much the adventure would change his life. Over the course of two years, Dan's expedition spanned forty thousand miles through sixteen countries. Now he will never be the same. After years of saving, dreaming and planning, Dan wanted to find out if an ordinary guy can achieve the extraordinary. With no sponsorship, a modest savings account and a willingness to learn Spanish, Dan threw himself in. Going solo, with no GPS and sleeping in a ground tent, Dan wanted to experience everything the Americas have to offer. From poking lava with a stick and hiking among world-famous mountains to corrupt military and camping with Ecuadorian locals - every day provided something new. With his eyes and ears open to the world around him, Dan met many interesting and thought-provoking characters. With their guidance and prodding, and by using their unique perspective, Dan was able to learn many valuable life lessons. Running to the beat of a different drum, Latin America was the perfect classroom for Dan to view our modern work-a-day world through an entirely new lens.

Book excerpt: From vanishing islands to talking flathead and nightmarish bushfires, Ben Walter's visionary Tasmanian fictions are unique in the landscape of Australian writing. An unemployed man chooses only to apply for jobs advertised in The Economist; a failed mountain expedition is mocked by the dead bodies of past climbers; and a father and son travel urgently to witness the miracle of Lake Pedder emptying. In What Fear Was, Walter combines beautiful, mesmerising writing with surreal discomfort and absurdist hilarity to completely upend the idea of an Australian short story. 'Lyrical and inventive, savage and strange. You've never read anyone like Ben Walter. Total mastery of language and imagery, paired with an unrivalled imagination and immense storytelling chutzpah. The shot in the arm Australian literature has been screaming for.' - Robbie Arnott 'With its unforgettable descriptions of the natural world, and the unsettling things that sometimes take place there, What Fear Was is an extraordinary collection of stories. Deeply strange, beautifully lyrical and intensely moving; no one in Australia writes like Ben Walter. The weird realism of What Fear Was is wholly unique and deeply valuable in contemporary Australian fiction.' - Ryan O'Neill. 'What Fear Was is a darkly funny, surreal and tender collection, wonderfully Tasmanian in its entanglements. You never know where Ben Walter's stories will take you - there are no straight lines here - but it's truly a pleasure to follow his trail.' - Jennifer Mills

Tired of mortgage payments, thirty-something Andrew and Gwynn sold nearly everything they owned but their Siamese cat and escaped their humdrum nine-to-five existence for life in paradise—a tiny island in one of the remotest spots on Earth: the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Woefully inexperienced, they took control of a luxury game lodge that catered to the likes of French aristocrats, Hollywood directors, Mafia lawyers, and the captain of the England cricket team. Not forgetting the hippos who liked to crash cocktail hour. Trouble soon followed as the reality of running a hotel on an island accessible only by boat or plane burst upon them. Andrew and Gwynn learned it's one thing for guests to wake up with gentle giraffes outside their windows, but it's quite another to keep them safe from poisonous snakes, temperamental elephants, and a hyena with a taste for plastic. All that was child's play compared to figuring out how to feed their guests when a 'quick run' to the grocery store required a plane, a bush pilot, and moderate risk to life, limb, and property. By turns funny, touching, and suspenseful, Torn Trousers is a real modern fairytale about getting exactly what you wished for…and then having to live with it. Scroll up and buy to escape to Africa today!

Book excerpt: At the start of the hellish, fiery Australian summer of 2019/20, Walkley Award-winning journalist and suburban dad Anthony Sharwood set off on a journey. Abandoning his post on a busy news website to clear his mind, he solo-trekked the Australian Alps Walking Track, Australia's most gruelling and breathtakingly beautiful mainland hiking trail, which traverses the entirety of the legendary High Country from Gippsland in Victoria to the outskirts of Canberra. The journey started in a blizzard and ended in a blaze. Along the way, this lifelong lover of the mountains came to realise that nothing would ever be the same - either for him or for the imperilled Australian Alps, a landscape as fragile and sensitive to the changing climate as the Great Barrier Reef.
