Our superhero mother modeled a Jesus Christ-like lifestyle. She consoled us during hard times and celebrated with us during the many good times. She had a blackboard and wrote something inspirational daily. She also walked us to our local library (about a mile from our home) once a week for new books. Our loving dad taught us to love the ocean beaches, swimming, and especially fishing. Both mom and dad modeled a great work-ethic. They both emphasized the importance of diligent study in school and gave us small rewards as incentives. They also showed us how to have fun around the house, on our block with 114 kids. I am most thankful for God's amazing grace which gave our parents faith. I am looking forward to seeing them both in heaven. I have learned that having this lifestyle and way of thinking has given me many fallbacks in life. It has led me to be in even many dangerous situations and incidences that have happened to me because places and people that I chose to be around. It is a miracle that I am even still alive to share this story. I write this story of my life in hope that others may not have to go through what I have gone through. I also write this to also show even if you are dealing with any form of addiction that may be harming your life, there is still hope and a time to change if you really have the desire to change for the better. There is a father in heaven who loves you a great deal, who knows you by name, and gives us these trials so that we can be used in this life and the life to come for a direct purpose. I find it amazing that the creator of the universe created us to be His children. I find it amazing that we are created in His image. This makes me feel like we are an important part of the universe, being on the planet where the Creator has His children! I know that we live in a competitive world; a place where appearance, social media, and money means everything. It can sometimes be difficult to have an optimistic outlook on life. Also, we live in a world where religion is slowly decreasing, and people are losing hope. I believe that religion means everything and even helps explain why we are even here. My biggest issue with religion is that each religion tries to convert rather than accept. There is too much dilemma on who is right and who has the exact answers of complete truth. When in reality, each religion believes in a creator and a purpose of us all being here (Christian or not). This is just my personal opinion, but there seems to be too much arguing on truth that it pulls away from what religion teaches. And in my opinion, it should only express LOVE! I love having a testimony of life and the opportunity to strengthen my testimony in religion. Our Father in heaven means everything to me. You mean everything to me as well""being my spiritual family for being another human being. I know that we live in a difficult world but have hope in everyone here that we will each find our direct purpose. I believe my direct purpose was to experience a life of drugs and alcohol so that I could recover and share my experiences of the dangers of messing with these substances in a world that strongly revolves around this style of living, even considering them cool and fun. I'm still working on what else is expected on me but know by having faith and keeping our Father in heaven in my heart, he will guide me in what next to do. What's your purpose? I know that you have one; believe in yourself, believe in a Creator that knows you by name. Ask and you shall receive, knock and it shall be opened unto you. These valuable lessons would prove useful later in my life as I looked for a way out of a bad situation I was in due to bad decisions that I had made. Questioning my self-worth as a child, I turned away from the church trying to find a place to fit in. Not realizing the extent of how much I did not know at the age of twelve, I started to get lost in the world of drugs and alcohol. My addictions became stronger as I got older and experienced a life where not all things worked the way I hoped they would. While my addictions went from drinking beer and smoking marijuana to smoking crack and drinking anything available, a place to fit in became more of a place of isolation for me as I no longer felt comfortable being around most family members if I had something stronger than just a few beers. This was in most cases when I would get high with other addicts or alone because for me a drink was always better with crack. At least that was the lie I would tell myself, along with the lie that my problem wasn't that bad. Finally, after thirty years of addiction, on June 6, 2006, I hit my rock bottom, but I remembered what I had learned as a child about a power above all other powers. I prayed to the highest power, and God, my Father in heaven, made a way for me to get into a drug-and-alcohol treatment program. I went through the program and took what I needed from it with the understanding that words also have power. Because of my faith and what I had learned in church as a child, I refuse to put the words of man. Addicts suffer from a disease for which there's no cure above the word of God. You are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37) and By his stripes you are healed (1 Peter 2:24). I do not believe that Jesus died for me and rose from the dead with power over all things except an addiction. I believe He came to conquer ALL sin so that all lost sinners who believed in Him and worked on building a personal relationship with Him could be recovered when He returned.
