Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline in Geography In the preparation of this course the observational and representative features of the work have constantly been kept in mind. As stated by the Committee of Ten, the true order of geographical study should be: First, see; next, reproduce; then study the productions of others, and, meanwhile ponder and reason on all.' Through a study of the simple phenomena of nature and through 1 study of man and his institutions as seen by the pupils in their home, school and social life in Stockton, they should be led with these standards of comparison to gain a conception of the world as a whole. In the primary grades the geography and history of Stockton, San Joaquin County and California are studied with great care, not alone because of local importance, but that they may become real units of measurement with which other cities, counties and countries may be compared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Complete Geography We have decided to teach these features objectively on a plan that has been highly commended. For instance. Instead of devoting two or three pages of text to the origin of mountains. A subject in which the average child takes no interest, we give in the general presentation of the physical geography of the earth four pictures of mountains, and under each picture give a brief description of the origin and character of the formation. The same course has been followed with reference to other physical features. The pupil will read these descriptions because of his interest in the picture, and will remember them for life because of their association with it. Commercial and Industrial Geography. - A leading feature of this book is the treatment of industrial and commercial geography. In actual life, it is a knowledge of the countries of the earth, and of the people who inhabit them, of their resources and industries, their cities and commercial relations, that one needs for practical business purposes, or even for an intelligent appreciation of the contents of the daily newspapers. Industrial Illustrations. - In carrying out this plan we have been engaged for three years past in collecting from all parts of the world industrial pictures - photographs showing machinery in actual operation, and under these we have placed descriptions which give in a few words a clear idea of the process of manufacture. We have distributed these throughout the book in such a way as to identify each industry with some state or country where it is especially prominent. We believe that this plan will awaken present interest and prove of permanent value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Geonomy: A Treatise on the Physical Laws of the Earth and the Creation of the Continents, Founded Upon Recent Discoveries In submitting this outline of a novel system of geonomy, and asking that it may be admitted into the confederation of recognized sciences, to occupy, at once, the place of geology and physical geography, I am conscious that I render myself liable to be charged with egotism; and if it shall be found, upon a proper investigation, that what I deem to be new and important discoveries are merely erroneous fancies, I shall abandon all defence, and throw myself upon the mercy of the public. If, on the contrary, it shall appear that I am not mistaken in regard to the essential principles of the new form of science which I propose to introduce, I shall hope and expect that the faults and errors that accompany the truths will be looked upon with a lenient eye, and attributed in a great measure to the numerous disadvantages under which the author has labored. This little book is designed merely as the forerunner of a larger volume, which will be presented to the public hereafter.% In the mean time, I would respectfully solicit from the friends of science the communication of any facts or suggestions which may be useful in bringing the geonomic system nearer to perfection. A wilderness of details is yet unexplored. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
