Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Natural Philosophy for Schools and General Readers This book is intended to supply the Widely felt want of a work at once easy enough for a class reading-book and precise enough for a text-book. Great pains have been taken to make every statement as plain as possible, and to put every sentence into the form which will render it easiest to understand at first hearing. Familiar language whenever available has been preferred to the use of technical terms, as it is not desirable to encumber begin ners with any names beyond what they need for con veniently expressing their ideas. Algebraic formulae have been altogether excluded. The woodcuts with which the work is profusely illus trated are not thrown in for mere ornament, but have been carefully designed and selected for' the elucidation of the text, and are fully explained. To avoid distract ing the attention of the reader, and at the same time permit reference when required, the technical names of pieces of apparatus have in many cases been indicated in the titles of the figures, though not used in the text. In like manner, in the index, several words are introduced which do not occur in the body of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It cannot lose motion in any di rection without communicating an equal amount to other bodies in the same direction neither can it acquire motion in any di rection, without diminishing the motion of other bodies by an equal quantity in that same direction. S. Fischer, of which the following 1s a translation, has been much used and highly approved in the German and French schools. It was selected by Biot, himself the author of two very valuable works upon the same subject, as best suited to a certain class of stu dents, whose want of leisure, or of previous preparation, might preclude them from more ample and elaborate treatises. A few alterations and additions have been made for the purpose of adapting it to the use of learners in the public and private seminaries of the United States. The alterations consist principally in converting the French weights, measures, degrees, into the cor responding English denominations. The additions are distinguished by being in brackets. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Philosophy for General Readers and Young People The present work has its origin in an attempt to comply with a suggestion which has frequently been made to me, that I should prepare an abridged edition of my translation of Ganot's Elements de Physique, which could be used for purposes of more elementary instruction than that work, and in which the use of mathematical formulae would be dispensed with. But I soon found that to do anything of the kind which would be more than a mere series of extracts would be very difficult, and hence I turned my attention to another book by the same author, which has had a very extensive circulation in France, his Cours elementaire de Physique, and this I have taken as the basis of the present book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Natural Philosophy: Compiled From Various Sources, and Designed for Use as a Text-Book in High Schools and Academies The compiler of the following pages deems no apology necessary for offering to the public another work on Natural Philosophy. Of the several works on this subject now before the public, and with the same general design as the present, each one, no doubt, possesses its own peculiar excellencies, and is adapted, more or less, to aid in advancing the great cause of education; but in the multitude of seminaries of learning, of different grades, in our country, considerable variety in the text-books used is absolutely necessary. Without claiming for the pres ent work, therefore, superiority in every respect over others that have appeared before it, it is believed that an appropriate place will be found for it, as an assistant in promoting the cause of general education.
