Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Music History The "Outlines of Music History" is intended to meet the demand for a concise survey of the entire field of musical development, presented in the light of recent research. It is only within comparatively few years that Science has cast its searching eye upon historical statements hitherto blindly accepted; and in so doing it has found the Art of Music, especially, through its imaginative and emotional character, encrusted all along the way with a prolific growth of fables and myths. Modern music scholars have for some time been working to strip off these irrelevant accumulations and to arrange the known facts in logical sequence; and as a result the links in the chain which extends from the regions of remote antiquity to our own time are now becoming plainly visible. The present volume is designed, moreover, for use both by the general reader and for class work. It is hoped that many who wish to gain an intelligent conception of how music has developed may find it an effective means; and with this result in view the numerous illustrations have been selected with great care to illuminate the text as to the style and materials used in the different epochs and as to the personality and characteristics of the leading composers. For class work, conducted either by private teachers or in institutions, and for the use of music clubs, special features have been introduced. A system of paragraphing, by which topics are numbered and treated individually, with specific titles, is one of these; and as a unification of these divisions a summary is appended to each chapter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Study of Musical History and Criticism The topics and references contained in the following pages are intended as an aid to those who wish to study musical history and criticism in a systematic and scholar-like manner. The time has gone by when the authority of a single book or a Single author could meet the demands of an intelligent curiosity. In history, litera ture, - every department of research in which the reliance is wholly or partially upon books, it is now taken for granted that the only rational method is the examination of many authorities with the aid of abstracts, topics, references, and similar guides. The scheme of this present manual is to indicate what material exists in English for the study of musical history, and how that material may be used to the greatest advantage. The topics are synopses of lectures given at Oberlin College; but they are also of general utility, for they summarize the most important phases of the subject, and show the student along what lines his inquiry must proceed. The method is to treat the topics as questions, and find the answers in the references. The author has in general, avoided references to books that are difficult to procure. Only those articles in periodicals are cited which deal with subjects that are not so well or concisely covered in any of the books available, or which have a special interest given them by their authorship. It assumes that every child, woman, or man should go out from the discipline of music-study, as he should from every other study, and exhibit all the qualities of true edu cation, the leading out of strong, healthy perceptive and conceptive power, a power capable of application to all research, equal to the emergencies of any problem of thought, and purified by the highest spiritual ideals. From this conception of the problem of education, and the relation of music to that problem, has sprung the system and mode of music-study designated by the term music-education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Musical History: A Comprehensive Outline of Musical History From the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Present Time Instruments of percussion were, doubtless, the first to be invented. From marking the rhythm by pounding on a tree or post with a club, it was not far to covering the end of a hollow log with a stretched skin, thus producing a rude drum. Progress was then easy toward the whole family of drums, tom-toms, gongs, cymbals, tambourines, etc., the latter kind as soon as metals and metal working had been discovered. Wind instruments were probably invented by some such accident as hearing a broken reed give forth a musical tone when blown across by the wind. The Egyptian and Greek myth has it that the god Hermes, walking b the Nile bank, picked up a tortoise shell which ad some sun-dried membranes stretched across it, and that this gave him the idea of the lyre. It is not improbable that some such accident as this really occasioned the invention of stringed instruments. Or perhaps the idea came from a tightly-stretched bowstring. However this may be, the first instrumental music must have been associated with vocal music, and must have been essentially the same in its nature and function. That is, it consisted of rhythmical successions of sounds, which owed their origin to the innate impulse to express, convey and excite feeling. Hence the promi nent attention given to novelties in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
