Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Logic and Metaphysics Thought is the activity of the universal, is in its two-fold sense correct. Contemplation, or the think ing consideration of an object, therefore, universalises it, i.e., alters it. Nevertheless, we believe that by contemplation we gain a knowledge of the essence of things - become conscious of fact itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines From Plato, an Introduction to Greek Metaphysics The author, however, admits that his original design was not to illustrate Plato. It was rather to put into Greek dress the more permanent problems of Metaphysics in all ages, and to show that the questions which to-day divide philosophers were most of them raised and debated years ago by the Greeks, with all the additional power and lucidity that their unrivalled language lent them. Such an object proved subsequently to be chimerical and, having determined to draw his illustrations of these problems from the writings of Plato, the compiler was gradually obliged to limit himself to a rudimentary exegesis of Plato. That this contains very likely many serious defects he is well aware, but he trusts that they are not of sufficient moment seriously to mislead beginners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Metaphysic: Dictated Portions of the Lectures of Hermann Lotze It affords me, therefore, the pleasure that comes from the hope of being useful to a wide circle of persons, to announce that I have arranged to trans late and edit several, if not all, of those little books called 'outlines' which have been given to the pub lic in Germany since the death of their' lamented author. These 'outlines' cover the entire ground of Lotze's mature teaching in the University upon the subjects of Logic, Metaphysic, Philosophy of Nature, Psychology, festhetics, Moral Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and History 'of German Philosophy since Kant. A word of explanation as to the origin of these books will suffice to assure the reader that he is to be put into com munication with the thoughts of this philosopher in a way which he can trust both as to substance and form of expressmn. The German from which the translations are to be made consists of the dic tated portions of his latest lectures (at Gottingen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World a Spiritual System: An Outline of Metaphysics The trend of metaphysics has long been in the direc tion of idealism, but in recent years this system has assumed popular forms, true or perverted. It is now out on the street and in the air, and this creates an occasion for a plain exposition of the subject. The ology is also being rewritten in the light of idealistic or monistic philosophy, and this book endeavors to apply idealism in the field of religion and life. Meta physics must submit to the pragmatic test, and at this point idealism wins large vindication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Metaphysics The publication of so small a book, dealing with so vast a subject, certainly calls for some explanation. It is the outcome of a larger plan - the ridiculus mus, as some may think, that has issued from a too ambitious undertaking. I had promised a good many years ago to write a book for Sonnenschein's Library of Philosophy, giving a comprehensive and connected survey of philosophical first principles, as these appear in the light of the most recent developments of thought. This promise may at some time be fulfilled; but the duties of a teacher of Philosophy in a provincial College are not favourable to large constructive efforts; and several circumstances have made this particular attempt appear less urgent than it once did. The publication of Mr. Bradley's great work on Appearance and Reality might well give pause to any one who had a similar design in view. If his brilliant dialectic and subtle speculative insight had failed to produce a convincing scheme of philosophic truth, the prospect was not very encouraging for the smaller fry. On the other hand, so far as he had succeeded, further attempts in the same direction became unnecessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Logic and Metaphysics In all discourse, or verbal expression of thought, there regularly occur, besides terms representing mere objects or groups or classes of objects, terms which, instead, stand for general notions, originating within rather than from without, predicates and relations under which, for the mind, objects stand or by which they are determined - that is to say, the so-called categories of thought. Such terms are, for example, being, quantity, essence, cause, actuality, end, truth, with their primitives or derivatives. The general notions for which such terms stand are of very great significance and interest, not only as forming the ground of definite connection, in consciousness, among objects, but also as together constituting a world of realities of themselves. The theory of reality, or metaphysics proper, is the more ulti mate of the two problems, and with it ancient philosophy began. Zeno of the Eleatics, the Sophists, Socrates, and Plato, represent the gradual transition of thought from the ontological to the epistemological standpoint. Aristotle developed psychology. Later on, the theory of knowledge degenerated into skepticism, and the question of reality again became prominent. In modern philosophy, this order was reversed by Descartes, its founder, who began with consciousness as the organ of knowledge. The question of reality did not arise until later and has never dominated. A theory of knowledge is, logically, a necessary preliminary to that of reality. In proportion as we unify facts and harmonize them under laws and principles, we have a scientific view of them.
