Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Lectures on the History of Philosophy The object of this manual is sufficiently indicated by its title, "Outlines of lectures on the History of Philosophy." It aims at no more than to present, in condensed form, a syllabus of the course, for review and recitation. For education, the learning to philosophize, what can be a substitute for the living guide, elucidating the students confused thought, and making him to grow in mind as he traces the development of human thought? It is surely enough to rest this on the pregnant words of the master; "nobler far is the serious pursuit of the dialectician who finds a congenial soul, and then with knowledge ingrafts and sows words which are not unfruitful, but have in them seeds which may bear fruit in other natures, nurtured in other ways, - making the seed everlasting, and the posessors happy to the utmost extent of human happiness." (Phaedr., p.276.) Text-books, surely, will not do this. In the history of philosophy, the lecturer will have a principle, a clue by which to guide his scholar. It may be a different one from what the best text books supply. The most scientific of these, if brief, will be the driest and most divorce philosophy from that out of which it springs, and on which it most powerfully re-acts, the progress of civilization, literature, art, politics, religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Greek Philosophy On the other hand, however, these views do not remain confined to their first authors, they spread and maintain themselves in schools, and by means of writings; a scientific tradition is formed, the later members learn from the earlier, and through them are stimulated to the completion, continuation, and cor rection of their results, to the asking of new questions, and the search after new answers and methods. The systems of philosophy, however peculiar and self dependent they may be, thus appear as the members of a larger historical interconnection; in respect to this alone can they be perfectly understood; the farther we follow it, the more the individual becomes united to a whole of historical development, and the problem arises not merely of explaining this whole by means of the particular moments conditioning it, but. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Ancient Philosophy Of the Lectures which follow, the most original are those on Plato and the Platonists, which fill nearly the whole of the second volume. They are, unquestionably, as the Author informs us, the result of patient and conscien tious examination of the original documents; and they may be considered as a perfectly independent contribution to our knowledge of the great master of Grecian wisdom. Of the Dialectic and Physics of Plato they are the only exposition at once accurate and popular with which I am acquainted; being more accurate than the French, and incomparably more popular than the German treatises on those departments of the Platonic philosophy. The Author's intimate familiarity with the metaphysical writings of the last century, and especially with the English and Scotch school of psychologists, has enabled him to illus trate the subtle speculations of which he treats in a manner calculated to render them more intelligible to the English mind than they can be made by writers trained solely in the technicalities of modern German schools, or by those who disdain the use of illustration altogether. To the Ethics and Politics of Plato equal justice has not been done, but from notes which have come into my possession I am inclined to think that this defect was in a great measure supplied in the unwritten Lectures on Ethics to which allusion has been made. They are all grounded on the fact familiar to anyone that understands Plato or Hegel, that all knowledge involves two opposite elements - never separate, and always distinct. This is seldom seen even by professed mentalists. Until it is, Philosophy is impossible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The famous introductory lectures collected in this volume represent the distillation of Hegel's mature views on the three most important activities of spirit, and have the further advantage, shared by his lectures in general, of being more comprehensible than those works of his published during his lifetime. A new Introduction, Select Bibliography, Analytical Table of Contents, and the restoration in the section headings of the outline of Hegel's lectures make this new edition particularly useful and welcome.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of a Philosophy of Religion The date, October, 1882, at which I find my wife began this task, soon pushed aside to make way for her translation of Scherer's History of German Literature, resumed after a while, but at the last left unfinished recalls the movement in favour of church reform tch was then astir in Oxford, and in which she felt a keen interest. Of that movement during its brief continuance Arnold Toynbee was the life and soul, and he it was who by his earnestness and eu thusiasm kindled in others sympathy with a scheme which, in its leading particulars, alas! Had but little chance Of success. Toynbee wished that the English Church might become in fact, what it is in theory, the very nation itself in a religious aspect. He saw and valued the actual comprehensiveness of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
