Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Electrical EngineeringThe object of this introduction will have been attained if it cause the reader of the fol lowing pages to bear constantly in mind that the terminology employed, although enabling him to follow, and to a large extent to predict, the sequence of phenomena, is hardly compatible with the most modern theory. The terminology employed is extremely useful and, after all, terms are only terms, and not facts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Engineering: First Course A text-book in electrical engineering emanating from Union College may be the occasion of some surprise to those who have been conversant with the development Of the electrical course in that institution. The authors have, it is true', recorded their Objections to the use Of a prescribed text. These Objections still hold good. In brief, they are, first, that a prescribed text tends to take the life out Of the class room, whether the course be con ducted by lectures or recitations, and second, that it tends to take the life out Of the study by relieving the student Of responsibility of continued effort. At Union College the fundamental aim is that the student Shall first comprehend, and then create. Comprehension comes through directed effort. This, the student acquires readily in the laboratory, but in the class room, it is not SO easy. The recitation falls short because it deals with the individual rather than the class. The lecture fails when the student knows he can fall back upon the text-book. The fault, however, is not with the text-book itself, but with the use that is made Of it. Obviously, then, its proper use is as a means Of directing the student's effort toward comprehension. Indeed, it Should com pel effort, not in order to make up for an author's failure to ex press himself clearly, but in order that the ideas Shall sink in and make permanent impressions on the mind. The book Should, therefore, be SO constructed and used that it shall be an additional aid to the student in creating his own expression Of the ideas with which he is brought into contact in the lecture, the recitation and the laboratory. It is desirable that fundamental ideas shall become fixed and clear in the student's mind as soon as possible, thus leaving him in a position to exert his full mental effort on that which is more advanced. Perfect for beginners! An Introduction to the Study of Electrical Engineering is a textbook authored by Henry Hutchison Norris. The book is written on the assumption that the reader has little technical knowledge of electrical engineering, but is equipped with a general understanding of the subjects examined. Norris' work would make an appropriate first textbook for a student new to the field of study. The book is divided into chapters, each of which provides a fairly detailed examination of a broad topic. Subjects covered include the history of electrical engineering, electrical circuits, the construction of electrical generators, electrical motors and their application, electrical measurements, and much more. The book concludes with a lengthy section of review questions, intended to provide the student with an opportunity to test their understanding of the subject matter. An Introduction to the Study of Electrical Engineering is an aptly titled work. The book serves as an excellent introduction to the subject matter, and remains approachable even by the layman. Readers interested in engineering and electronics are encouraged to consider adding this excellent work to their personal library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Electrical Engineering This text is the outgrowth of experience in teaching the principles of electrical engineering to students Of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It aims to provide a substantial first course in the subject by presenting rigorously, and at the same time in under standable form, the really basic principles upon which modern electrical engineering rests. In furtherance of this purpose many problems and examples from current engineer ing practice are introduced. The book is not, however, to be mistaken for a complete condensed treatise on the entire subject. It is strictly a first course on the principles, and its study Should be followed by detailed courses in direct-current and alternating-current machinery. Where ever applications of the principles are introduced, they are for the purpose of illustrating these principles and render ing them real and alive to the student. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Engineering: The Theory and Characteristics of Electrical Circuits and Machinery The second edition contains all the material in the original text but much of it has been rewritten and a great deal of new material added. The more important additions include sections on complex alternating waves and wave analysis, on polyphase alternating current circuits, on the construction of the characteristic curves of direct-current generators and motors, on the design of direct and alternating-current machinery, on the Blondel diagram for the synchronous motor, on the symbolic method of analysis of the induction motor, on alternating-current commutator motors, and finally a chapter on electrical measuring instruments. The chapter on direct-current machinery has been entirely rewritten and much enlarged, and to make it complete a short chapter outlining the design of a direct-current generator has been added. This chapter and the other sections dealing with design are not intended to cover the work required in a course on design but only to give the student some idea of the formulae and constants involved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Electrical Engineering Electrical A preliminary edition of the book was published in 1910, primarily for the use of the students at the Institute, and this preliminary edition was preceded by mimeographed notes cover ing practically the same ground. The present edition differs from the preliminary edition chiefly in the addition, at the end of each chapter, of a summary of the important definitions and principles developed in that chapter and of a list of problems, with answers, illustrative of these principles. Certain sections of the text have also been rewritten, particularly the sections on energy, inductance, and capacity; the conception of linkages between the electric and magnetic circuits has also been more fully developed. The typographical errors of the preliminary edition have been corrected and additional steps have been inserted in some of the mathematical deductions.
