Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Drawing Lessons for Grammar Grades The National Course in Drawing is arranged to meet the needs of those teachers who believe that drawing should be taught for itself, and not entirely or principally for its value in other studies. Owing to the special attention given to free-hand drawing, this course will, however, prove of more value as an aid in other studies than any other course in drawing. It is arranged with the idea that much of the time often spent in modeling, paper folding and cutting, in illustrative work, in ambi dextrous exercises, and in working drawings, is wasted; and thus its chief difference from other courses is that free-hand drawing from objects is made the first subject of instruction, and for the first five or six years is, with color and arrangement study, the only work presented. Besides postponing the scientific work to the three upper grades of the grammar school, this work is made much more simple than that in other courses. It deals with the principles underlying work ing drawings, and does not include unrelated details Of construction, and subjects which cannot be understood by the pupils. Free-hand drawing of objects is now generally from copies or from dictation, and must be of this nature as long as pupils are not enabled to correct their own work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for Primary Grades, Including Outline by Lessons: With Suggestions for Teaching White's New Course in Art Instruction embodies the ideas and experience of many persons who, starting at widely separated points and working along different lines, have arrived almost simultaneously at the same conclusions. It differs from other courses in plan, method, aims, and in its order of lessons. I. Its plan comprehends the entire subject of art instruction, from which the several departments of the work and their subdivisions are derived. It follows, therefore, that the divisions are logical, natural, and recognized by established usage. Thus, the department of Geometric Drawing naturally and logically includes measurements, geometry, working drawings, developments, and, in short, the whole realm of mathematical, or instrumental, drawing. The department of Decorative Drawing embraces the study of color, historic ornament, botanical drawing, and the employment of the information thus gained in making original decorative designs, in paper-cutting, etc. Pictorial Drawing is the comprehensive term employed to cover all the elements of freehand drawing from regular solids, simple objects, sketching from nature, etc. II. The methods employed are determined by the laws of the mind. Since the object itself impresses the mind more vividly and accurately than any representation of the object, models and objects take the place of pictures to be copied throughout the course; that is, pupils draw from real things, not from pictures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Text-Books of Art Education: Teachers' Manual for the Primary Course of Instruction in Drawing Art education is a subject so broad in itself, of such great impor tance in all practical life, and so valuable educationally, that instruction in it Should begin contemporaneously with education in language and in number. The Kindergartner begins it even earlier, a lesson in form being among the very first lessons given. Art Education in its elementary stages is an education in the variations, modifications, and applications of form. The simple elements of form should be taught in every primary school. The education of the eye in seeing form, and of the hand in expressing it, must precede and lead to the education of the mind in comprehending the principles which govern its representation and application. It will be noted, by looking over the schemes for the work of the two primary years, that no geometric form is given technically until children have been made familiar with it by observation and imitation. First see, then do, then know. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drawing and Designing: In a Series of Lessons Mr. Charles G. Leland, in his work on "Practical Education," distinctly insists on the utility, indeed the paramount importance, of a sound and practical rudimentary training, whether in connection with elementary or more advanced technical education. This is becoming daily and increasingly apparent to those who, in their care and training of the young of both sexes, are guided by reason and common sense. Failing such a basis, it is obvious that no process of later cramming is likely to produce equally successful and permanently beneficial results. This series of manuals on "The Minor Arts and Industries" is designed on the lines thus laid down. It will be found that each handbook presents the subject with which it deals in a thoroughly popular and practical manner; that the lessons carry the student on his road step by step from the simplest elements to the point where the most advanced works fitly find their place in his course of study; in short, the greatest pains have been taken to insure a thorough mastery of the rudiments of each subject, and so clearly to state each lesson, illustrating it where necessary by plans and drawings, that even very young children may be interested in and trained to practical work. On similar grounds the self-taught student will find these manuals an invaluable aid to his studies. The present volume on "Drawing and Designing," forms a fitting introduction to such a series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All true education consists in the cultivation of the judgment," writes William Walker in the Preface to Handbook of Drawing. With this simple statement of intent, Walker imparts lessons on drawing and lessons about the nature of art. Walker describes techniques and art together, so the reader learns not to copy, but instead to see art for him or herself, and approach that readers will surely be delighted with. The Handbook of Drawing has two aims. First, the book sets out to teach the elementary principles of drawing. Second, it seeks to impart judgement on matters involving art, so that students can develop a good eye. To teach students how to draw, Walker begins with the basics: how to see, how to hold the pencil, how sketch, how to outline and how to use shade and light. The lessons are easy to understand and are accompanied by illustrations. The second half of the book touches on the essence of what it means to be an artist. There are many beautiful passages examining how to draw an object in a more natural, artistic way. For example, after describing how to draw a leaf, Walker discusses how to make it the leaf more life-like and more beautiful. "But if a leaf is so placed as to show its varied and delicate curves in front one of another then we are no longer drawing from the flat... but from an object in space, with all the exquisite changes of curve and surface, and there is now more properly a field for Art expression." The illustrations - one of a flat leaf and one of a foreshortened, flowing leaf - expertly demonstrate Walker's advice. Handbook of Drawing discusses perspective and how technical ability differs from artistic ability. Walker repeatedly warns students against mere copying, encouraging them, instead, to find their own style. Anyone interested in drawing must have this expertly written text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free-Hand Drawing: A Manual for Teachers and Students In order that this change may be made, it is not necessary that the teacher become artist, but that they give to the subject the time required to enable them to draw simple subjects correctly. The methods presented have been tested in elementary and advanced schools, and, if followed, will give ability to draw correctly from nature in an artistic manner. To secure satisfactory results it is necessary that those giving the most elementary instruction understand the requirements of more advanced work. For this reason the chapter on composition has been given, and no attempt has been made to arrange the book so that teachers may study simply the directions for their special grades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers' Manual for Freehand Drawing in Primary Schools That it is practicable to teach drawing in the public schools is no longer a matter of doubt; and that the study is one of great industrial and educa tional value, when properly taught, no person, who has carefully investigated the subject, questions for a moment. The drawing, however, must be wide in its range, rational, and systematic. It must be much more than Simple copying: indeed, it must be, in the main, something wholly different from that; and it must be much more than picture-making, - even good original picture-making. Those who think otherwise sadly misapprehend the scope and value of one of the most practical studies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines for Kindergarten and Primary Classes: In the Study of Nature and Related Subjects, Arranged by Months Where there is a kindergarten preparatory, there should be a division of the work. Under each topic the principal ideas lie within the experience of the kindergarten child. There is a real value in the first grade taking up these same subjects in which the child has already gained an interest in the kindergarten and giving them a fuller treatment. The child is delighted that he can from the first con tribute something to the common fund, his interest is held, and he has a foundation upon which to build quickly. Care should be taken, however, to make such division of the outline that the primary pupils while singing their old songs and telling their old stories also have new and fresh material.
