Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Applied Sociology Many, if not most sciences, present two aspects or departments, closely related to each other but distinct from each other. The first department is that which is called the theoretic or pure science. Its function is to study phenomena, ascertain facts, and establish laws and principles. It has no object in view beyond the acquirement of knowledge. The second department is the practical or applied science. This division has much of the nature of an art, its purpose being to take the facts, principles, and laws worked out by pure science, and devise methods of utilizing them to serve some human purpose. It is telic in Professor Ward's phraseology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Applied Sociology This book is intended to be just what its title suggests - an outline of applied sociology. Dealing with applied sociology, it concerns itself but little with questions of origins, and devotes itself to facts rather than to theories. Being an outline, it is meant to serve rather as a guide to the study of life in society than as a compendium of dogmatic sociological conclusions or a series of finished dissertations on social problems. In the preparation of this work I have been animated by the conviction that the time is ripe for a more thoroughly scientific approach to the solution of the problems of social advancement. There is too much of a tendency to treat each question as a thing by itself, and to forget that life in society is not divided into watertight compartments. I have therefore departed from the method of treatment customary in books of this order, and have sought to take a comprehensive view of the entire field of social life and social endeavor, to correlate in a systematic and logical manner the manifold aspects of the social organization, and to indicate the actual interrelationship between seemingly divergent departments of life. This I believe to be the true, and therefore the scientific view. Accordingly in this book much more emphasis is laid on accurate analysis and classification than upon the exhaustive treatment of specific topics. Book excerpt: This work and its predecessor, Pure Sociology, constitute together a system of sociology, and these, with Dynamic Sociology, The Psychic Factors of Civilization, and the Outlines of Sociology, make up a more comprehensive system of social philosophy. Should any reader acquaint himself with the whole, he will find it not only consistent with itself, but progressive in the sense that each successive volume carries the subject a step farther with a minimum of repetition or duplicate treatment. The central thought is that of a true science of society, capable, in the measure that it approaches completeness, of being turned to the profit of mankind. If there is one respect in which it differs more than in others from rival systems of philosophy it is in its practical character of never losing sight of the end or purpose, nor of the possibilities of conscious effort. It is a reaction against the philosophy of despair that has come to dominate even the most enlightened scientific thought. It aims to point out a remedy for the general paralysis that is creeping over the world, and which a too narrow conception of the law of cosmic evolution serves rather to increase than to diminish. It proclaims the efficacy of effort, provided it is guided by intelligence. It would remove the embargo laid upon human activity by a false interpretation of scientific determinism, and, without having recourse to the equally false conception of a power to will, it insists upon the power to act. - Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlines of Sociology Here is my Principles of Sociology cut down a third, rearranged, rephrased and equipped for the class room. Still, I advise teachers who have been using Principles as a text not to discard it for this book. It is fuller, and as for the exercises, they can be had of the publisher in pamphlet form and placed in the hands Of each student. Outlines of Sociology is provided in order to meet the demand for a shorter text for the use of those who cannot devote as much as a semester to the subject. My thirty-two years of trying to impart Sociology to university students have resulted in a technique which teachers of this book may like to know about. Now that my system of Sociology is to be had between covers I do not lecture. I lead discussions. My class is broken up into sections not to exceed twenty-five members. Each student has his appointed seat and a glance over the section enables me to record absences on the seating chart before me. At the beginning Of the course every student is supplied with an assignment sheet (to be pasted inside the back cover of his text), which shows exactly what will be required Of him for every session in the semester. After ten or twelve minutes of sharp quizzing (here is where the quiz questions come in) we take up the exercises. If those per taining to the assigned lesson exceed five in number, the student answers only alternate exercises, those sitting in Odd-number seats answering odd-number exercises and those sitting in even-number seats answer ing even-number exercises. The student is expected to have wrestled with the exercises in advance and to bring with him written solutions. His paper is not to be handed in but is there as evidence that the student has given enough consideration to the problems to formulate and write down answers. When, after reading out an exercise I call upon Reed or Daly for an answer, he is not to improvise, but to read his written answer. If he has nothing in black and white he says unprepared, even if a bright idea is on his tongue's tip. After a few answers have been considered, the question is thrown open to general discussion and then the impromptu ideas get their innings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Sociology This little work has been mainly the outcome of a course of lectures which I delivered at the School of Sociology of the Hartford Society for Education Extension in 1894 and 1895. They were given merely from notes in six lectures the first of these years, and expanded into twelve lectures the follow ing year in substantially their present form. The American Journal of Sociology having been instituted in that year, I was requested to contribute, and one of the twelve lectures appeared in each number from its first issue, that of July, 1895, until its twelfth, that of' May, 1897, forming an uninter rupted series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Laws: An Outline of Sociology In the first place, then, men began to perceive some similarities in the midst of these differences, some repetitions among these variations. Such are the periodic return of the same conditions of the heavens, the cycle of the seasons, the -regularly repeated succession of ages among living creatures, youth, maturity, and old age, - and the traits common to individuals of the same species. There is no science of the individual as such; all science is general; that is, it considers the individual as repeated, or as capable of indefinite repetition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Practical Sociology: With Special Reference to American Conditions It is not intended that the Outline of Practical So ciology should be exhaustive; there are many great questions, such as taxation, the finances, etc., which have not been included, because they will come more appropriately in other volumes of the American Citi zen Series. The references given at the head of each Chapter could have been greatly increased in number, but it was deemed advisable to give simply those that are most accessible. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the services of Messrs. Charles W. Morris, Jr., walter F. Carruthers, and charles H. It treats sociology as the scientific study Of group phenomena, of the factors controlling groups, of the different permanent forms and laws of group life, of group control and progress. The principle has been kept to the front throughout the treatise that the chief justification of the existence of any group is found in giving the persons who compose that group the fullest and richest possibilities of developing all their poten tial powers. Another principle of importance has been given a Similar prominence, namely, that the chief justification of the existence of any person is found in giving his life nu selfishly in upbuilding the lives of other persons and groups. So, whether you are involved in the helping professions or any other occupation where success depends on having a good understanding of people; a student of sociology wanting to put your learning into practice; or simply interested in how sociology can help address social issues, this book offers a solid foundation of understanding. It is an ideal text for anyone seeking to use sociological ideas to make a positive difference.

There is nothing Original in it except that it is the formulation and views Of a teacher and student Of the vast field Of sociology. It was prepared to meet the demands of those who have some curiosity about the nature Of society and sociology, but have not a great deal Of time in which to satisfy it. Sufficient references accompany the various chap ters to enable the reader and student to make a larger study Of the subject, and it is hoped that this simple outline will not extinguish any whole some craving for information, but may even whet the appetite for subsequent and more ex tensive investigations. The outlines are primarily descriptive, but they are to a degree critical and constructive as well, while in some instances, as for example in the study of "The Educational Aim," a development of underlying theory has been offered. Much in the outlines has little or no value as suggestion or criticism, being no more than enumeration of aspects of the subjects dealt with that merit attention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Sociology: A Treatise on the Conscious Improvement of Society by Society This work and its predecessor, Pure Sociology, constitute together a system of sociology, and these, with Dynamic Sociology, The Psychic Factors of Civilization, and the Outlines of Sociology, make up a more comprehensive system of social philosophy. Should any reader acquaint himself with the whole, he will find it not only consistent with itself, but progressive in the sense that each successive volume carries the subject a step farther with a minimum of repetition or duplicate treatment. It is this mobilization of the army of achievement which it is sought to express in the title of Part I. Until there is movement there can be no achievement. Movement is the condition to achievement, and achievement is the means to improvement. With a clear conception of the logical relations of these three terms in the argument the entire scheme and scope of applied sociology will unfold, and the reader will be put in position at least to understand the work, whether or not he accepts its general conclusions. In others it denominates a study of the institutions of tribal communities. In yet others it is applied to highly special studies of pauperism crime and philanthropy. In the literature of sociology, also, an equally varied usage may be found. Special investigators employ the word in senses that are unrecognized by the systematic writers.
