Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of A Handbook for the Study of Mental Health provides a comprehensive review of the sociology of mental health. Chapters by leading scholars and researchers present an overview of historical, social and institutional frameworks. Part I examines social factors that shape psychiatric diagnosis and the measurement of mental health and illness, theories that explain the definition and treatment of mental disorders and cultural variability. Part II investigates effects of social context, considering class, gender, race and age, and the critical role played by stress, marriage, work and social support. Part III focuses on the organization, delivery and evaluation of mental health services, including the criminalization of mental illness, the challenges posed by HIV, and the importance of stigma. This is a key research reference source that will be useful to both undergraduates and graduate students studying mental health and illness from any number of disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Psychology My aim in writing this book has been to present in brief outline and simple form the methods and most important results of experimental psychology. The volume contains the substance of lectures delivered to second and third year classes in the Cornell University, and is designed primarily as a text-book for those who attend my lecture courses. I hope, however, that its sphere of usefulness may extend beyond these limits. The plan of work is analytic. It sets out from the consideration of the simplest factors in adult mental experience, and endeavours gradually to build up the actual mind from the laws of these simple factors and their groupings. After a general introduction comes a series of four chapters, which deal with the elementary conscious functions. A second series discusses those complex mental processes which are easiest of analysis and lend themselves best to individual treatment. A third series deals in part with still more complicated processes, while in part it pushes the analysis of previous chapters still further. A concluding section surveys the results of the whole enquiry, and indicates the point at which psychology gives place to metaphysics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Physiological: Psychology, a Text-Book of Mental Science In the early part of 1887 I published the results of several years of research, in a book entitled "Elements of Physiological Psychology." The very gratifying reception almost immediately given to this work showed an extended and profound interest in the experimental and physiological study of mental phenomena. The signs of this interest have continued unabated until the present time; and the book has been widely adopted, both in this country and abroad, for private reading and for the instruction of classes. Although the "Elements, etc." did not enter into the detailed history of discoveries and discussion of theories in the field of physiological psychology, it was necessarily somewhat voluminous and technical. For it aimed to give a summary of the entire field ; and thus to render accessible the data and conclusions to be found, separated, only in scores or hundreds of larger and smaller monographs. Almost immediately the demand arose for a smaller and less technical book, which should be adapted to aid the teacher with classes less mature, or able to afford less time to the subject. The present volume has been written for the express purpose of meeting this demand. It is not, however, a mere abridgment or revision of the larger work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mental Man, an Outline of the Fundamentals of Psychology The object in producing this work is to present the subject in a concise and clear manner, yet make its scope sufficiently wide to include, in the main, all proper mental phenomena. Aside from this, if the author has been dominated by any one idea more than by another, while writing this book, it is that the treatment should be such as to make the reader feel that the subject has relation to the actual conditions of life. The point of view is not that of the schoolmaster or theorist or that of the devotee to the laboratory merely. It was the author's aim to reach out a little into the verdure of "life's golden tree." Psychology is not a logic, describing and explaining the processes of correct and fallacious thinking; nor a discussion merely of apperception, or the manner in which knowledge is acquired and expanded; nor merely a laboratory handbook of psycho-physical measurements; but psychology is a science that should also show us the mind of man growing, striving, moved and moving, consciously and mysteriously working and ever fluctuating and varying, often even to a pathological extent, - in short psychology should be the story and discussion of the Mental Man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Individual Study This manual of methods for the study of the human individual is intended to serve a practical and introductory rather than a scientific purpose. It is not intended for students interested in research, but is for those who wish a first guide in the study of individuals. It is in one sense and not another that it is called practical. It does not contain much about standards and results of experiments, by means of which one can safely compare individuals with the average or norm, for the purposes of an exact or scientific pedagogy. It is intended to be practical in the sense that it is hoped that by it the student can be led to observe individuals more intelligently and systematically, and thus be the better able to understand and serve them. Incidentally it is to be hoped that some insight into the nature of individuality and the scientific study of it will be acquired. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have had two major purposes, in writing this brief volume. They have, in the first place, attempted to formulate material for a college course which should give in vigorous, very direct, practical fashion acquaintance with the major problems of mental health, and mental disease and deficiency. The writers have attempted not only to outline the primarily medical and psychiatric features of these problems of mental health, but also to show their even more fundamental relations to education, and to give some realization of the frequency with which matters involving mental abnormality appear in the affairs of everyday business and professional life. The writers have, in the second place, attempted a treatment which should be of definite practical value to those interested in various special fields of work in which problems of personality and adjustment are frequently met; they have had in mind particularly social service, personnel management, work with delinquents, and those most important functionings of the school and college which involve the student's emotional and characterological development and his educational, vocational, and recreational guidance.
