Book excerpt: It is true, they don't make things the way they used to, they don't do things the way they used to, and the times are not what they used to be. This book is a journey back to the days of my early childhood through high school. What was like to be raised in Indiana basketball country? It was an exciting time with over 700 high school teams from every corner of the state of Indiana competing each year in a single elimination tournament for the Indiana State Basketball Championship. One small school triumphed in a miracle over the great odds against them. It is still for me to imagine what those hundreds of Indiana basketball heroes experienced by having family, friends, classmates, cheerleaders, teachers, community fans for all kinds of reasons, even stranger bystanders, cheering and shouting them on with encouragement. Book excerpt: Off the coast of California, running from Santa Barbara to La Jolla, lies an archipelago of eight islands known as the California Channel Islands. The northern five were designated as Channel Islands National Park in 1980 to protect and restore the rich habitat of the islands and surrounding waters. In the years since, that mission intensified as scientists discovered the extent of damage to the delicate habitats of these small fragments of land and to the surprisingly threatened sea around them. In Restoring Nature Lary M. Dilsaver and Timothy J. Babalis examine how the National Park Service has attempted to reestablish native wildlife and vegetation to the five islands through restorative ecology and public land management. The Channel Islands staff were innovators of the inventory and monitoring program whereby the resource problems were exposed. This program became a blueprint for management throughout the U.S. park system. Dilsaver and Babalis present an innovative regional and environmental history of a little-known corner of the Pacific West, as well as a larger national narrative about how the Park Service developed its approach to restoration ecology, which became a template for broader Park Service policies that shaped the next generation of environmental conservation.

His adventures started during the depression in the irrigation canals of Southern Idaho. For nine years his adventures sent him down the "River of No Return" as a guide for the Boy Scouts of America. He found himself working with dynamite and helicopters to build trails and bridges in some of the remotest mountain regions of the United States. His adventures left him stranded in Alaska above the Arctic Circle and living on remote islands in the South Pacific. Through all these adventures he had time to raise five children, invent a paper cooking pot, and learn to tie doggy bows. If you consider yourself a common man or woman, reading about the life of Rodney Anderson will make you see your own life differently.

Book excerpt: “Island Of Adventures – Tales Of Grand Island” is about tales, legends and adventures that have occurred on or around Grand Island, Michigan, the largest island on the south shore of Lake Superior. Located near the famous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Grand Island was once home to Native Americans, followed by fur traders and early white settlers. Purchased by the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company in 1900, the island then became a tourist resort which lasted into the 1950s, when its pristine pine forests were logged. Grand Island then declined into a wilderness again. Today it is a National Recreation Area, its nature being preserved. I first came to Grand Island when I was five years old, my family having been invited by close friends who own one of the two lighthouses. From then on I have spent almost every summer on the island in cottages without electricity and running water. During these years I heard many stories about the island which I finally decided to compile into a book. They vary from a mysterious lighthouse murder to the thrill of bear encounters, to rescue missions on Lake Superior and some islanders’ tall tales, along with a closer look at Grand Island’s history and the fascination of exploring the island for remnants of its past. The Foreword is written by Loren Graham who has told me several of these stories. He is also the author of “A Face In The Rock - The Tale Of A Grand Island Chippewa”.

This edition is 8.5 X 11 softcover and is complete with full color images of these adventures. Wilderness Adventures on Horseback is an amazing read of the true, back-country adventures of gutsy horses and stalwart friends. The equine characters tackle trails "impassable" to horses, rickety bridges over chasms, and slick-rock granite passes at lofty elevations. The intrepid friends push themselves to their sometimes frightening, other times admirable, and many times hilarious limits. The author refers to many trails as "E-ticket rides," and that's what I guarantee the reader will get!

In her first adventure, her disappointment at not having a birthday party is unexpectedly overcome when she, her two sisters, her best friend, and a mentally handicapped youth she befriends are given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride Jumbo the elephant in the circus parade! In her second adventure, a little Ute Indian girl, a "What I Have to Be Thankful For" essay contest, and a spooky encounter in an abandoned mine with "the thing," move her story along to the third and final adventure. Gertie's third adventure climaxes her two previous ones and includes a community birthday parade for an unlikely birthday celebrant; Gertie's being the "volunteer" in a demonstration of the pain-relieving properties of a new drug, Novocain; and a surprise wedding. Woven throughout Gertie's adventures are lessons of faith, love, and family unity. How these lessons affect Gertie, her family, and her friends make Gertie's Real-Life Adventures joyful reading.

Book excerpt: Who among us does not have personal experiences with those small but important little buildings that go by many names – outhouses, privies, porta-potties, johns, loos, cans, crappers, thrones, and many more? And who has not heard or shared their own funny tales about those adventures? Here is a book full of amusing and rhyming poems dealing with exactly that subject, from -How the term “crapper” got its name -To Jose who rents his portable bano to drivers at the world’s busiest border -To military colonels using two-story outhouses (hmmm... what does that mean to the privates?). These and more outhouse tales will likely stir some memories and definitely bring on big-league chuckles (and maybe snorts). Also here is a set of poems by author Tom on subjects other than outhouses that will trigger more laughs. Finally here are some classic centuries-old poems about adventuresome outhouse experiences written by authors James Whitcomb Riley, Robert Service and yes, some tomes Shakespeare himself spouted off. “Never in my life did I realize there was so much to say about outhouses! From drunken damsels to a triad of escaped convicts to the outhouse adventures of Santa Claus, this book of poems is a delight. It transports the reader to another time and (odorous) place in a deluge of hysterical whimsy. I challenge you not to giggle.” Sondra Thiederman, Ph.D., Author of 3 Keys to Defeating Unconscious Bias: Watch, Think, Act”--From Amazon.

Book excerpt: Alan Adaschik's dream was to visit Alaska; America's last frontier and a place which abounds with wildlife and unspoiled wilderness. Upon retirement, Al and his wife Gayle sold everything and bought a thirty-seven foot Damon Intruder motor home to make his dream a reality. "An Alaskan Adventure" is a narrative about Al and Gayle's trip which highlights the places they visited and the wonderful things they experienced along the way. "An Alaskan Adventure" commences in Indiana following a visit with Al's relatives who live there. After negotiating the traffic jams of Chicago, Al and Gayle traveled I-94 across the northern Great Plains visiting Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana along the way. Heading north, they visited Glacier National Park and continued on to tour Yoho, Banff, and Jasper national parks in Canada. Afterwards, Al & Gayle picked up the Alaskan Highway which took them to a realization of Al's dream. The reminder of the book is about Al & Gayle's travels around the Great Alaskan Triangle, a circuit of 900 miles defined by the cities of Tok, Fairbanks, and Anchorage. While negotiating this triangle, Al and Gayle's primary goals were to find gold in one of the many streams they crossed and to also find a Wooly Mammoth frozen in a glacier. Toward this end, they took side trips to the White Mountains National Recreation Area, Denali National Park, The Top of the World Highway, and the towns of Homer and Chicken. "An Alaskan Adventure" is not just a book about touring Alaska. Al is an environmentalist and a theme evident throughout the book is that the beauty we find around us is fleeting and that if we, as a species, continue to over-populate our world, what we see and value so highly is sure to go away.
