No matter the direction or velocity of the wind, this fiery vessel moves swiftly toward the northeast, they say, always accompanied by an eerie wailing sound. The story of this ship is but one of the colorful legends intrinsic to the charm of North Carolina's historic coastland. From the northern tip of the Outer Banks to the lower end of the sweeping shoreline, there are stories to be found ... and to be told with gusto, or awe, or sometimes with horror. At Nags Head there is a sand hill where only the unwary go without shoes, and at Beaufort the grave of a young British naval officer buried upright, standing at attention. From Shackleford Banks comes the story of a strange woman named Porpoise Sal and from Wilmington a shadowy tale of a macabre Maundy Thursday party that had awesome consequences.

Book excerpt: In 1963, Judge Charles Whedbee was asked to substitute on a morning show called Carolina Today on Greenville, North Carolina's, television station while one of the program's regulars was in the hospital. Whedbee took the opportunity to tell some of the Outer Banks stories he'd heard during his many summers at Nags Head. The station received such a volume of mail in praise of his tale-telling that he was invited to remain even after the man he was substituting for returned to the air. "He had a way of telling a story that really captured me," said one of the program's co-hosts. "Whether he was talking about a sunset, a ghost, or a shipwreck, I was there, living every minute of it." Word traveled as far as Winston-Salem, where John F. Blair proposed to Whedbee that he compile his stories in book form. Whedbee welcomed the challenge, though his expectations for the manuscript that became Legends of the Outer Banks and Tar Heel Tidewater were modest. "I wrote it out of a love for this region and the people whom I'd known all my life," he said. "I didn't think it would sell a hundred copies." From the very first sentence of the foreword, Whedbee stamped the collection with his inimitable style: "You are handed herewith a small pod or school of legends about various portions of that magical region known as the Outer Banks of North Carolina as well as stories from other sections of the broad bays, sounds, and estuaries that make up tidewater Tarheelia." The Lost Colony, Indians, Blackbeard, an albino porpoise that guided ships into harbor?the tales in that volume form the core of Outer Banks folklore. Whedbee liked to tell people that his stories were of three kinds: those he knew to be true, those he believed to be true, and those he fabricated. But despite much prodding, he never revealed which were which. Legends of the Outer Banks went through three printings in 1966, its first year. Demand for Whedbee's tales and the author's supply of good material were such that further volumes were inevitable. The Flaming Ship of Ocracoke & Other Tales of the Outer Banks was published in 1971, Outer Banks Mysteries & Seaside Stories in 1978, Outer Banks Tales to Remember in 1985, and Blackbeard's Cup and Stories of the Outer Banks in 1989. Although Judge Whedbee died in 1990, his legacy lives on through his folklore. And so it was fitting that in 2004, the 50th anniversary of John F. Blair, Publisher, that the company should release this volume of the 13 stories that the Blair staff felt were the best of Charles Harry Whedbee.

Book excerpt: An original YA novel based on the hit Netflix series Outer Banks, written by New York Times bestselling author Alyssa Sheinmel, featuring JJ and John B in a brand-new, high-octane adventure—now in paperback It’s spring break in the Outer Banks, and the islands are swarming with rich tourists. The last thing JJ and John B want to do is spend their week watching Kooks in action, so they plan a fishing getaway to the notoriously dangerous Frying Pan Shoals—nicknamed “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for good reason. Turns out they aren’t the only adventure-seekers at sea. Soon after they set sail, the friends run into the captivating Savannah, who hitches a ride aboard the HMS Pogue when the weather worsens and her boyfriend leaves her stranded. As a violent storm sets in, the three realize the only place to safely ride out the squall is a creepy, abandoned hotel on the shoals’ lighthouse platform. Or is it abandoned? It doesn’t take long for the three teens to realize they may not be alone. . . . Further complicating the life-or-death adventure is a mounting attraction between JJ and the secretive Savannah—the closer JJ gets to her, the more he realizes he’s playing with fire. Even if they get out of the shoals alive, can a Pogue–Kook romance survive the high-stakes shores of the Outer Banks?

Book excerpt: Hidden beneath the sandy beaches and deep within the twisted coastal forests of the Outer Banks are the old ghost tales that permeate the Outer Banks coast of North Carolina. These stories can go back decades or centuries. Far from the usual legends that are often told and retold, this collection of thirteen tales of harrowing haunts delivers traditional folk tales and mysterious events including some that have rarely, if ever, been written in print before. You won't find the usual stories in here, no pirates on the wind, but there are still plenty of ghosts to go around. Spectral figures are seen on the ocean waves, or wandering late at night in a house on Roanoke Island. Strange lights appeared on long lost sand dunes and old, creepy beach houses. Ghostly figures still walk the land around Hatteras, including a musical spirit from beyond the grave. Witches, too, make their appearance, casting spells for good or ill on the land and its inhabitants. There is even a spectral hand that appeared from a solid wall of an Outer Banks landmark and a tragic shipwreck that appears only to the unlucky few who hear the sounds just offshore, late at night. Go check your front door to be sure it is locked. Will that keep the ghosts out as you read? Turn on the porch light, maybe that will help. Or perhaps the glow of a campfire will keep the spirits at bay, just outside in the darkness, as you enjoy Haunting The Carolina Coast. These thirteen stories will be sure to entertain you. But don't be surprised if you open the book and it gives you a little shiver, too. Prepare to be scared.

Book excerpt: Adestination for many tourists eager for sun, sand, and a simpler way of life, and a far distant cry from the glitter and neon of more traditional, commercial oriented beaches, the Outer Banks of North Carolina is a natural wonder sheltering and buffering Eastern North Carolina from the volatile temperament of the Atlantic Ocean. Even before the official birth of North Carolina and into the twenty-first century, this coastal strip of barrier islands has played an important role in the state's and nation's history, from the mysterious and tragic disappearance of the Lost Colony on Roanoke Island to its strategic importance during the Civil War and World War II to today, serving as a friendly haven for visitors worldwide. Outer Banks, with over 180 images, many seen here for the first time, is a fascinating visual history, allowing the reader to explore the many different facets of life throughout the region. This volume is full of captivating scenes of early fishermen, both professional and amateur, proudly displaying their successful catches of the day; photographs of North Carolina's most famous aerial pioneers, the Wright Brothers, and their early experimental flying machines; views of many long-forgotten life saving stations, homes to countless brave volunteers who patrolled these turbulent waters, risking their own lives to save hundreds of sailors and passengers when their ships were in distress; and scenes of the Outer Banks' most notable and visible landmarks, its beautiful lighthouses, such as Cape Hatteras and Bodie Island.
