Book excerpt: Heaven and Earth was made possible by a unique grass-roots partnership between Seattle Parks and Recreation, Carkeek Park Advisory Council, and local artists. For the first six years of the exhibition, local artists were recruited and the project was curated and produced by Center on Contemporary Art, and we published the catalog for the seventh year as well.Combined catalog of CoCA's two 2010 outdoor sculpture exhibitions, Heaven and Earth II at Carkeek Park, and Overgrowth and Understory at Cougar Mountain Regional Wildlands Park. The work of over 30 artists is represented. Maps of the exhibitions and essays about each show by curator David Francis round out this volume, which is published in a topsy-turvy format. With two covers, the format is a throw-back to the inaugural publication in this series, the Archive Edition of our initial Heaven and Earth Catalog, letterpress printed and hand bound by Carol Clifford of Orangehouse Press in a do-si-do format, which required no flipping, as it was bound on both edges. Content was separated into artwork and editorial content on each of the two sides.

Book excerpt: Exposed: Outdoor Sculpture in Stowe, Vermont documents the sculpture and other art of the 20th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition in Stowe, Vermont. The 60-plus page, full color book features twenty-two artist profiles, photographs of the sculptures, profiles of eleven other artists participating in the project, and critical writing about the exhibition.Exposed is a long-standing annual outdoor sculpture exhibition in Stowe, Vermont. Hosted by Helen Day Art Center, Exposed was initiated by two local artists, Chris Curtis and John Matusz, to bring what was Vermont Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition off the lawn of Helen Day Art Center and into the village of Stowe to "expose" the artwork of both emerging and established artists to a greater public. Now in its 20th year, the exhibition aims to continue this tradition while introducing artists who work interactively with community and site. It will showcase sculptural objects and engaged the public with a series of parallel events. This pervasive exhibition is grounded in a commitment to bring art to the public and the public to art. Exposed 2011 is co-presented by Petra and Stephen Levin and Helen Day Art Center.

Book excerpt: James Turrell is widely acknowledged as one of the most important artists working today. From the mid 1960s onwards his principal concern has been the way we apprehend light and space. His study of mathematics and perceptual psychology, as well as his Quaker upbringing and background as a pilot, inform his practice. His first exhibition in 1967 of 'projection pieces' used high-intensity light projectors to give the illusion of a solid geometrical object, often seemingly floating in space. From these investigations of light, Turrell went on to begin his series of 'Skyspaces'. These are enclosed viewing chambers that affect our perception of the sky. Since then he has continued to create works using light as his medium. Perhaps his most celebrated works are his 'Ganzfeld' chambers, whole spaces immersed in light; as well as his more recent 'Tall Glass' series, which resemble windows of slowly changing color. Meanwhile, Turrell continues work on a monumental project at Roden Crater, an extinct volcano in Arizona. Here he has created a series of viewing chambers, tunnels and apertures to heighten our sense of the heavens and earth in one of the most ambitious artistic endeavors of modern times. In summer/autumn 2015, Houghton Hall, Norfolk, hosted an ambitious and significant exhibition of James Turrell's light pieces, many collected by the Marquess of Cholmondeley, owner of Houghton, who has long been an admirer of his work. This publication has been produced to document and to accompany the exhibition - a project devoted to James Turrell's work has been a long-held ambition of Lord Cholmondeley. He first discovered Turrell's work twenty years ago, and in 2000 invited him to Houghton to install a 'Skyspace' amongst the trees on the west side of the house. Soon afterwards, a rusty water tank was removed from an eighteenth-century folly in the park to make way for his atmospheric interior space, 'St Elmo's Breath'. The exhibition was centered around works from the Houghton collection, which also includes projections, a 'Tall Glass', holograms, and prints. The exhibition was complemented by further loans to help illustrate the broad spectrum of Turrell's work; and a unique, site-specific installation was created especially for Houghton - 'The Illumination'- lighting the whole west façade of the house that could be viewed from dusk. LightScape follows three highly acclaimed exhibitions by Turrell in 2013/14 at the Guggenheim, New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The National Museum of Australia, Canberra has also hosted a major retrospective of his work, which closed just as the exhibition at Houghton Hall opened. The publication includes a foreword by David Cholmondeley, a text by Peter Murray, and an interview with the artist by Hiram C. Butler. Designed by Peter B. Willberg and printed in Italy, this hardback, cloth-covered publication is essential reading for all admirers of Turrell's oeuvre.

Book excerpt: Described as one of the most beautiful and unique sculpture parks in the United Kingdom, Sculpture by the Lakes marries the soft beauty of nature's wild river landscape with the more formal presentation of monumental outdoor sculpture. It is that combination of art and landscape that inspires Sculpture by the Lakes. Whether it is work on a monumental scale that relates to its environment, or smaller works, the sculptures of Simon Gudgeon are perfectly placed in the delicately nurtured natural landscape to visually enhance their surroundings. The effect is a balance, a harmony of form and context where the experience is central. Without walls, without interpretation, each person can engage with the art and the ever-changing environment.

Book excerpt: There is no other exhibit like Outdoor Sculpture at Maudslay. This artist-organized event is site-specific, egalitarian, multi-generational, and uncurated. Its format inspires thought-provoking, accessible artwork. Over three hundred diverse artists, including professionals and those new to artmaking, created 700 plus in-site installations during its first twenty years. Photographs of over 400 of these accompany the show's history and culture. Artists' monumental scale, intimate, conceptual, or representational sculptures form this art in nature. The exhibit's origin, funding, format, and leave-no-trace philosophy, and anecdotes about the artists and their work personalize the book. Always outdoors, the art endures the elements - even an occasional Nor'easter. The public, local towns, and the State of Massachusetts have consistently supported the exhibit since 1998, verifying its value to the community. Inspiring backdrops are the rolling meadows, forests, water features, and historic gardens of Maudslay State Park in Newburyport. Open to walkers, those on horseback, and families, the park is an ideal venue for site-specific art. Self-expression is vital to the show these outdoor artists create. This book is their story.

Book excerpt: This spectacular book brings together work made by Andy Goldsworthy in Britain, France, the United States, Australia and Japan between 1990 and 1993. It includes works that involve not only stone of various kinds slate, limestone, sandstone, river boulders but also leaves, flowers, sand, clay and scrap steel. A riverside slab of rock in St Louis, Missouri, glows with the colours of autumn leaves, becomes part of a wall, acquires an overall covering of green leaves, and is cradled in a nest of branches. In a forest in the Lake District, a wall snakes its way through the trees. Sandstone arches progress across the floor of a Dumfriesshire quarry. A dead tree in the Australian outback is miraculously clothed in rust-red sand Stone: Andy Goldsworthy offers an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary breadth of the artists output and to understand more about this exceptionally talented sculptor whose work is accorded worldwide recognition.
