Book excerpt: One hundred and eighty years after Lewis and Clark's ?Voyage of Discovery? (1804?1806), Dayton Duncan set out in a Volkswagen camper to retrace their steps. Out West is an account of three separate journeys: Lewis and Clark's epic adventure through uncharted wilderness; Duncan's retracing of the historic trail, now in various ways tamed, paved, and settled; and the journey of the American West in the years in between. Readers traveling with Duncan will encounter the people who inhabit today's West: farmers and ranchers, cowboys and mountain men, Native Americans, residents of dying small towns, city dwellers who have survived cycles of boom and bust. From the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to the Oregon coast, readers will be treated to a landscape as variously impressive as its people.

At 6'1-- 220 pounds of work hardened muscle, broad shoulders, with a swagger in his walk he was quite a sight to see. With his Bowie knife and Indian war hatchet hanging on the left side of his money belt and a new model 1858 .44 caliber Remington six shot revolver on the right side, cross draw fashion, he had the look of one to ride the river with. His Uncle Jake, being a mountain man, had taught him many lessons of self-defense. The Indians were in awe of his long flaming red hair and were impressed with his superb knowledge of Indian sign language. He was in tune with his surroundings, whether in the Rocky Mountains or out in the open expanses of the Great Plains. The challenging task to lead his family and friends from Cleveland, Tennessee to a beautiful and lush valley in the New Mexico Territory was filled with dangers. The 1600 mile journey would be full of hardships and tragedy, from the excitement of saloon brawls to the hangings of outlaws. Red was to lead a wagon train of 21 overland wagons, with 29 men and 23 women and their many children west to build their new homes and to put down roots in the new wide open territory. He chose to travel the northern most route of the Santa Fee trail. They faced many dangers from Horse Thieves, Outlaws, Indians, Half Breeds, adding to their daily hardships. This novel has it all....Depicting the toils and hazards faced on a wagon train in 1860 on the lawless frontier. .... This BOOK is filled with High Adventure and Romance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having banished eastern Native peoples to lands west of the Mississippi, President Andrew Jackson’s government by 1833 needed a new type of soldier to keep displaced Indians from returning home. And so the 1st Dragoons came into being. Will and John Gorenfeld tell their story—an epic of exploration, conquest, and diplomacy from the outposts of western history—in this book-length treatment of the force that became the U.S. Cavalry. The 1st Dragoons represented a new regiment of horsemen that drew on the combined skills and clashing visions of two types of leaders: old Indian killers and backwoodsmen such as loudmouth miner Henry Dodge; and straight-arrow battlefield veterans such as Stephen Watts Kearny, who had fought Redcoats in 1812 but now negotiated treaties with Indian tribes and enforced the new order of the West. Drawing on soldiers’ journals and other never-before-used sources, Kearny’s Dragoons Out West reconstructs this forgotten, often surprising moment in U.S. history. Under Kearny, the 1st Dragoons performed its mission through diplomacy and intimidation rather than violence, even protecting Indians from white settlers. Following the regiment up to the U.S.-Mexican War, when diplomacy gave way to open violence, this book introduces readers to future Civil War generals. Colorful characters appearing in these pages include Private Thomas Russell, a young attorney tricked by a horse thief into joining the army; James Hildreth, who authored two books on the 1st Dragoons; and English drill sergeant Long Ned Stanley, whose tenure in the 1st reveals much about American immigrants’ experience in 1833–48. The promises made in Kearny’s well-intentioned treaty making were ultimately broken. This detailed and in-depth look back at his legacy offers a glimpse of a lost world—and an intriguing turning point in the history of western expansion.

Book excerpt: This is Lori Patrick’s life story. The story starts with Lori’s dairy farming childhood during World War II, outlining her parents’ struggles raising eight children during tough times. After a stint working on the farm, Lori moves to the bright lights of the city and into the family of her future husband Barrie Patrick who she met working at the Queensland Times newspaper. Barrie’s family led a flamboyant lifestyle in stark contrast to her own. Barrie’s father Ern was the Queensland Times editor and his mother Eva, the effervescent life of the party. They introduced Lori to new experiences, including holidaying on Noosa’s Hastings Street when it was a strip of bitumen in the sand. After they wed, Lori and Barrie went in search of success in Outback Queensland where they worked as a ringer and governess and later went on to buy the famous Blue Heeler Hotel in Kynuna. The pub tested their strength, but they overcome adversities to put the town on the map as a tourist destination. The main attraction was their home-grown entertainment that included Barrie holding up tourist coaches with a shotgun and cracking a cigarette out of Lori’s mouth, often for the benefit of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. This all came to an end when they buried their 20-year-old son who was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic event was too much and they returned to South-East Queensland. Following Barrie’s death, Lori went on to travel the world and continue her search for personal success.

Book excerpt: She’s a walking, talking disturbance of his peace... When former Navy SEAL West Donovan trades covert ops for small-town cop, he craves calm and order. Rescuing a sexy, law-bending hitchhiker during a rainstorm raises his gut-level trouble detector—plus a few things south of his gut—into the red zone. He vows to help this particular tumbleweed find her way and keep it professional, but when she becomes his downstairs neighbor, professionalism is sorely tested. He’s got red lingerie infiltrating his laundry, sultry songs invading his bedroom, and suddenly he’s the one in need of rescue. Aspiring singer/songwriter Roxy Goodhart ventures to Bluelick, Kentucky to outrun her latest mistake. It’s a doozy, involving a lying ex-manager, a dire lack of cash, and a teensy bit of grand larceny. Landing in the long, strong, entirely too tempting arms of the law is no way to keep a low profile while she re-builds her “L.A. or bust” fund. Taking an apartment that—oops—puts her under West...er...in his path every day doesn’t help. Testing his impressive reserve is beyond reckless, but she’d love to test it...all...night...long. Each book in the Private Pleasures series is STANDALONE: * Private Practice * Light Her Fire * Falling for the Enemy * Wet and Reckless * Undercover Engagement

Book excerpt: EasyTalk is designed to help many millions of yearly visitors (business and pleasure) to the United States, the many business owners throughout the World who want to take part in the giant U.S. economy, the slightly over 1 million new legal immigrants to the U.S. every year and the millions of resident professionals from the last dozen years or more. Many formerly foreign medical folks in the one of the World’s largest Medical Centers, for example, who asked me to compile a book so they can at least enjoy going to the grocery store, do other shopping or their jobs better. Underlying EasyTalk is the little understood Science of Phonology (hearing and listening) expressed in common, simplified language to achieve these goals. The book’s area of phonology focuses on short and long sounds of our alphabets vowels as they modify conversation syllables in talking or listening to others.
