Book excerpt: "It's the unfathomable modern legend that has become a testament to the resilience of the human spirit: the 1972 Andes plane crash and the Uruguayan rugby teammates who suffered seventy-two days among the dead and dying. It was a harrowing test of endurance on a snowbound cordillera that ended in a miraculous rescue. Now comes the unflinching and emotional true story by one of the men who found his way home"--Page 4 of cover

Book excerpt: This is the story of one particular little boy trapped in silence, struggling to regain language. And it is the story of every one of us who uses language in much the same way we breathe: effortlessly, intuitively, taking this gift for granted in our daily lives. In a work that captures the whole universe of language, Russell Martin probes this most profound and complex human trait but never abandons his central concern, always circling back to the troubling question of the speechless child. Investigating the mystery of what went wrong and why, he spins a tale of detection, unearthing disturbing truths and reaching surprising conclusions. In the end, his is a spellbinding drama; a tale of one family's determination to help their child find his way back to words; a story of one school's willingness to make room for this child; a story, too, about big, seemingly insurmountable problems, and small but noble victories. In combining this story, with an elegant inquiry into the totality of language, Martin takes us on a voyage of discovery into the very essence of what makes us human. Moving us with the miracle of language, he tells a tale that is a cause for celebration. "A wholly remarkable book . . . Martin leaves us with a deeper understanding of language itself, a richer appreciation of its promise, and a realization that the ability to communicate is a kind of grace." --The Los Angeles Times "A deeply moving rendering of human beings in adversity. . . Other accounts of the suffering of autism have been published, but few can vie with this one for thoughtfulness, scholarship, and personal accent." --New York Times Book Review "The journey into language is a magical passage for any of us, and Russell Martin's brilliantly observed story of a boy struggling to speak takes us into the latest realms of how and why words come to us, and we to them." --Ivan Doig, author of This House of Sky and English Creek

Bill lived with a significant disability of quadriplegic cerebral palsy. He did not have use of his arms, hands or voice. Society's prejudices proved to be a greater obstacle than his disability in attaining his first life's goal of completing college. William (Bill) L. Rush chronicled his extraordinary life from childhood until graduation from the University of Nebraska -Lincoln in Journey Out of Silence, first published in 1986. This second edition brings back into print Bill's original chronicle of his personal "Journey Out of Silence." It also contains an introduction to Our Life Our Way, the sequel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andras Schiff is one of the most important pianists of our time. This stimulating memoir will appeal to a broad readership because of the fluent and accessible way he speaks about music, and of course through his inimitable art of making music out of silence. Far from being well-known just for his brilliant musicianship, Sir Andras has also received international attention by taking a public stand against nationalistic and racist attitudes, and by refusing to perform in Haider's Austria, or Orban's Hungary. In the first part of his book, Schiff discusses with the esteemed author and columnist Martin Meyer his artistic principles, playing techniques, musical interpretations and his professional experiences as a performer and conductor. In the second part, Schiff tells the story of his family and his life, from memories of the Holocaust to his political engagement in the present. He discusses music and politics, including his thoughts on Communism and global capitalism; and his enlightening experiences in Budapest, London and Florence. He also offers his insights into great composers such as Bach and Mozart, and his interpretations of key works for piano. MUSIC COMES OUT OF SILENCE will delight Andras Schiff's multitude of admirers, whilst attracting many readers who are as yet unfamiliar with his genius.

Book excerpt: A complete resource for daily prayer, this volume has helped countless people develop a simple pattern of daily prayer based on a classic monastic structure and using striking contemporary language. Each outline provides for about 15 minutes of prayer, which can be extended by silence and reflection. For each day, there is an invocation, psalm, Gospel reading, the Lord's Prayer, followed by prayers that lead into the rest of the day. It can be said in a group or read privately and includes thematic variations for each day of the week and each season of the Christian year. It features Jim Cotter's arresting and beautiful paraphrases of the Psalms which draw out their meaning for today's world and its needs. Beautifully produced in two colour printing and with a ribbon marker, music for each of the 150 Psalm responses is provided by the composer Paul Payton.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No TV, no cell phone, no social media, no family or friends. Just alone in silence for sixty days. Written from a small cabin in the mountains above Santa Cruz, California, Bok's diary recounts his retreat into solitude and his search for a return to the simplicity of pure being. Without distraction, he has no choice but to face whatever comes—whether it's the incessant chatter of the mind, the arising of overwhelming emotions, or the simple observations of running water and birdsong. We say it's Bok's diary, but he draws us in so intimately that these sixty days become our own. Through this intense and immersive process, both for Bok and the reader, a deeper place is found within, a place of stillness and well being. You may be surprised what Bok finds, or more importantly, what he doesn't find. Alexandra Burda’s illustrations are a perfect compliment to the sparseness, sensitivity and beauty of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2000 Outstanding Book Award presented by the Organizational Communication Division of the National Communication Association Organizing Silence is a thought-provoking look at how silence is embedded in our language, society, and institutions. It provides an overview of the varied philosophical approaches to understanding the role of silence and communication. One particular view of silence/communication, as grounded in political and patriarchal frameworks, is given special attention. The author questions not only how dominant groups silence marginalized members of society, but also how marginalized groups privilege and abandon each other. Sexual harassment is given as an example of material and discursive practices that articulate both a micro and macro level of silence, and accounts of both women and men who have been sexually harassed are provided. The book provides an alternative aesthetic perspective as a way of understanding the realities we create, encouraging alternative ways to listen to the silence, and presenting novel possibilities for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient Greece, the spoken word connoted power, whether in the free speech accorded to citizens or in the voice of the poet, whose song was thought to know no earthly bounds. But how did silence fit into the mental framework of a society that valued speech so highly? Here Silvia Montiglio provides the first comprehensive investigation into silence as a distinctive and meaningful phenomenon in archaic and classical Greece. Arguing that the notion of silence is not a universal given but is rather situated in a complex network of associations and values, Montiglio seeks to establish general principles for understanding silence through analyses of cultural practices, including religion, literature, and law. Unlike the silence of a Christian before an ineffable God, which signifies the uselessness of words, silence in Greek religion paradoxically expresses the power of logos--for example, during prayer and sacrifice, it serves as a shield against words that could offend the gods. Montiglio goes on to explore silence in the world of the epic hero, where words are equated with action and their absence signals paralysis or tension in power relationships. Her other examples include oratory, a practice in which citizens must balance their words with silence in very complex ways in order to show that they do not abuse their right to speak. Inquiries into lyric poetry, drama, medical writings, and historiography round out this unprecedented study, revealing silence as a force in its own right.
