Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly colored memoir chronicles the exploits of a flamboyant Jewish family, from its bold arrival in cosmopolitan Alexandria to its defeated exodus three generations later. In elegant and witty prose, André Aciman introduces us to the marvelous eccentrics who shaped his life--Uncle Vili, the strutting daredevil, soldier, salesman, and spy; the two grandmothers, the Princess and the Saint, who gossip in six languages; Aunt Flora, the German refugee who warns that Jews lose everything "at least twice in their lives." And through it all, we come to know a boy who, even as he longs for a wider world, does not want to be led, forever, out of Egypt.
Book Synopsis The Religion of Ancient Egypt by : William Matthew Flinders Petrie
Download or read book The Religion of Ancient Egypt written by William Matthew Flinders Petrie and published by Binker North. This book was released on 1906 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Religion of Ancient Egypt is a classic religious studies text by the great pioneering English egyptologist, W. M. Flinders Petrie. Before dealing with the special varieties of the Egyptians' belief in gods, it is best to try to avoid a misunderstanding of their whole conception of the supernatural. The term god has come to tacitly imply to our minds such a highly specialised group of attributes, that we can hardly throw our ideas back into the more remote conceptions to which we also attach the same name.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Wife Out of Egypt Egypt, like Tunis, is still inhabited by a race, neither numerous nor powerful now, which has seen all the dynas ties of history come and go. The Copts - eu Arab way of saying Egyptians Egypt is the land of G ts or Copts -are the descendants of the men who hewe wood and drew water for the Pharaohs, for conquerors like Darius the Persian, the Macedonian Ptolemies, the Romans, and the Arabs, and are the intellectual hewers and drawers of modern Egypt. Like the Berbers of Tunis, they were mightily oppressed by Roman and Byzantine masters for not coming into the orthodox religion; like the Berbers, they thought that their lot could not be worse under the Arab conqueror, and stood by sullenly while their masters were conquered, though their help would have made the Arab conquest impossible. It might have been thought that all that is worth saying on the subject had been said, and well said. This would be a mistake. Each year some fresh discovery modifies our conception of Egypt and its history, and it is not a rare event for a belief which no one ever thought of question ing to be destroyed by a single blow of the excavator's pick. Download or read book The Spell of Egypt (Classic Reprint) written by Archie Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spell of Egypt Somebody wrote The books that have been written about Egypt, would dam the Nile, and since he wrote it enough more books have been written about Egypt to sink a dahabiyeh in the Father of Waters. Nevertheless, Egypt, which sometimes seems to have been the beginning of almost everything that plays a part in the contemporary life of man, is always new. The marvel is not the number of books about Egypt, but that so few have been written. Assuming that every book has its topic, there is reason for wondering why the writers of the world ever went beyond that inexhaustible land of topics. A book might be written about every square foot of Egyptian soil, every monument that raises its head above the ground, every cave in its honeycombed mountains, and every ripple upon the broad bosom of the river that gives the country life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Court Life in Egypt IT was in January, 1880, that I received a telegram summoning me out to Egypt as tutor to the sons of the Khedive and, though a friend long familiar with the East pledged his knowledge of orientals that the order meant no hurry for a month or two, I judged it better to obey more literally. AS yet I had not learned the Egyptian proverb, Haste is of the devil. So I was soon on board a French packet sailing away from the Bay of Naples, not sorry to have so bright a scene for the last clear view in Europe. Book Synopsis The Route of the Exodus (Classic Reprint) by : Edouard Naville
Download or read book The Route of the Exodus (Classic Reprint) written by Edouard Naville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Route of the Exodus I shall recall only in a few words what concerns the arrival of the Israelites in Egypt. Most Egyptologists have adopted as correct the statement for which we are indebted to the Byzantine chronographer Syncellus, who says that it was under the king Apophis, in Egyptian A pepi, that Joseph attained the high dignity which is described in Scripture. Apepi is known to us as one of the last, perhaps even the very last, Hyksos king. The Hyksos were foreign invaders, and, in all probability, Mesopotamians, who had been driven out of their country by great events which took place in the valley of the Tigris and the Euphrates. They were a mixed race; the mass of the population seems to have been Semitic, while their rulers, judging from the type Of their faces, such as they are seen on the monuments of Tanis and Bubastis, were of Turanian origin. Undoubtedly their invasion had been marked, as is related by Manetho, by destruction, plunder, and violence, as is usual in Eastern wars; but the Hyksos h'ad soon yielded to the influence of the more cultivated race over which they reigned. The conquered had by degrees overcome the conquerors, who had adopted the customs, the language, the writing, the civilization of the Egyptians; all except the religion. For, notwithstanding several centuries of dominion, the religion still raised between the Hyksos and their subjects an in separable barrier. They reigned ignoring Ra, meaning in hostility against the Sun-god. Such is the way in which a native queen describes their rule two centuries after the first rebellion against them.
