The whole nation must be a team in which each man shall play the part for which he is best fitted... Each man shall be classified for service in the place to which it shall best serve the general good to call him... The significance of this cannot be overstated. It is a new thing in our history and a landmark in our progress. It is a new manner of accepting and vitalizing our duty to give ourselves with thoughtful devotion to the common purpose of us all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Los Angeles City Schools and the War (4) All War Activity was to be Primarily Educational. This forbade multiplication of the same product by one individual, once the educational value to the learner had been gained. The large number of pupils permitted the production of much material without sacrifice of educational values. (5) Clerical Records to Show the Work Accomplished. All of these things were not decided at the first meeting, although from the beginning it was agreed that definite policies should be established and clearly stated for the benefit of the teaching force so that all misunderstanding should be avoided. The details of the work of the committees, and their membership, are given in the appendix. (See Directions, Circular No. 6, page 65.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Schools and the War The following pages represent an endeavor to study the effects of the war upon schools in other countries and especi ally in the United States. The first four chapters deal with some specific problems of the public schools in connection with the war and were written when the great world conflict was still going on. They show the revolutionary changes which the public schools have made in adjusting themselves to the needs of the war, and suggest the unmistakable tendencies of our educational reconstruction which is yet to come. The last two chapters were written when the great war had just come to an end. In them the author has tried to show, in the light of the experience of many school systems in this country; how American public education can be reorganized in order to meet the needs of the coming new world order. It is the author's hope that they may be of some value to the general discussion of educational reform. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of a Visit to Schools of France in War Time, 1917 There are two armies for the defense of our civilization. One is the Army of Present Defense; the other is the Army of Future Defense. We have for months that have run into years watched the former, marveling at its valors, sympathizing with its losses. We are now mobilizing and training our own forces to join in that defense on the crucial line, which civilization must hold. But this side of that line is the other army, pictured by M. Viviani, former Minister of Public Instruction in France, when he said: "Unlessthemilitary authorities forbid, the schools must everywhere be kept open. Thus it may be said that our 'scholastic front' follows everywhere the very line of the trenches, being never more than ten kilometers distant, often less than two." From the military front we have daily report. Hundreds of correspondents watch its every movement. The whole world, whatever its occupation, turns every morning to see what is happening there. But of the vast other army, in France alone twice or three times the first army in size, there are but meager reports. It is only when its teachers and pupils are mobilized into the first that we are likely to hear of them, either fighting in the trenches or helping in some specific way to give material aid or spirit to those who are exposing their lives to make the world a safe place for free human beings to live in. It was this second army, this "scholastic front," that, representing a portion of our conscript Army of Future Defense - tens of thousands of teachers and millions of children - I went to France to see, in order that we might have some advice of those under whose tuitions the immortal valors of the first army have been nourished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colleges in War Time and After: A Contemporary Account of the Effect of the War Upon Higher Education in America It is apparent to all that the higher educational system of the United States has suffered a war change. Following, as it has, immediately upon the reconstruction of educational ideals and standards which marked the past two decades, this war change has added the last touches to an academic condition so new to us as still to seem largely unfamiliar. Before our entrance into the world war we already realized the presence of a swift current of innovation, carrying collegiate education into uncharted seas of activity. Since April, 1917, this current has become a rushing torrent, sweeping before it all the old traditional landmarks from shores hitherto untouched by change. The curriculum, the semester division, the customs of student life, whole departments of learning - all these have been torn from their moorings and floated off into a remoteness from which, in their old form, they may never return. It is difficult, while living in the midst of such changes, to view them in their proper perspective. This volume can at best claim to be but a contemporary account of the conduct of higher education during the war period. It is perhaps impossible to draw from all the rapidly crowding events of the past two years the certain conclusions which a longer interval and a maturer study will allow. Often during the preparation of the following pages, events happened which necessitated a recasting of much subject matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History, of the Great War This brief history of the world's greatest war was prepared upon the suggestion of the National Board for Historical Service. Its purpose is to expand into an historical narrative the outline of the study of the war which the authors prepared for the Board and which was published by the United States Bureau of Education as Teachers' Leaflet No. 4, in August, 1918. The ar rangement of chapters and the choice of topics have been largely determined by the various headings in the outline for the course in grades seven and eight. The authors trust that the simple presentation here given may aid in developing a national comprehension of the issues involved in the war; and they hope it may play some part in preparing the American people for the solution of the great problems which lie immediately before us. There was a time when textbooks indicated that the Revolution, the Mexican War, and the Civil War, with a few connecting paragraphs, were about all that were necessary to record. Such treatment now seems ridiculous in the light Of the splendid achievements of peace. In studying the wars themselves the idea of proper perspective must be held firmly in mind. Besides the heroics there must always be remembered the burdens and the awful sorrows Of such struggles, not only Of those on the fields but of those in the homes as well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Schools and Universities in the World War Fortunately such an alternative was at hand in the narrative, amply supported by documentary evidence, of those who had played some part in the conduct of affairs during the War, or who, as close Observers in privileged positions, were able to record from first or at least second-hand knowledge the economic history of different phases of the Great War, and Of its effect upon society. Thus a series of monographs was planned consisting for the most part of unofficial yet authoritative statements, descriptive or historical, which may best be described as about halfway between memoirs and blue-books. These monographs make up the main body of the work assigned so far. They are not limited to contemporary war-time studies; for the economic history of the War must deal with a longer period than that of the actual fighting. It must cover the years of deflation as well, at least sufficiently to secure some fairer measure of the economic displacement than is possible in purely contemporary judgments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Safeguard Their Future: A Rational Approach to the Problems of Juvenile Delinquency in Wartime It is to help work toward an understanding and solution Of these problems that this pamphlet has been prepared. As teachers, we are especially interested in the role of the schools and their contribution to Our children in war time. But the school is only one part, though an important one, in the lives of the children. Neither the causes nor the cure for delinquency lies in the schools alone. We shall, therefore, through a typical case handled by the Bureau of Child Guidance, analyze the home and community situations which lie back of problems Of aggressive behavior and delinquency, as well as the methods of work of the Bureau Of Child Guidance. Because Our allies, entering the war before us, have had to solve similar problems, we shall present some of the methods which the British and Russians have used with proven success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and Education Addresses These addresses are collected in the hope they may help to keep the educational lessons of the war in vivid remembrance. It seems incredible that men should ever forget them. Yet many will do so as soon as the storm drifts away. Our American schooling has been weaker on the side of memory than in some other directions, so that it has become only too easy to forget. If through failure to perceive and remember, we fail to embody the teaching of the war in our education, the loss to our nation will be enormous, because we shall lose the one new impulse which can both save and strengthen our entire schooling from beginning to end. That new impulse is the pow erful revival of the belief in discipline and duty, as opposed to all sordid or sentimental theories. If it is forgotten or ignored, our schools and col leges will sink lower. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of history from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and forward into the future with less emotion and more coldblooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. The nation has entered this war in no jingo spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
