Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Public Schools It is just seventy years since Sydney Smith wrote in the 'Edinburgh Review' that at a public school 'A boy is cast in among five or six hundred other boys, and is left to form his own character - if his love of knowledge survive this severe trial, it, in general, carries him very far; and upon the same principle a savage, who grows up to manhood, is in general well made, and free from bodily defects; not because the severities of such a state are favourable to animal life, but because they are so much the reverse, that none but the strongest can survive them.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggested Reforms in Public Schools Many of the laws of health have, since Dr Arnold's time, been ascertained with scientific accuracy, and emphasised strongly by medical and scientific men; and many health reforms have without doubt lately been introduced into schools, as, indeed, has been the case in society generally. But these reforms have been, almost without exception, such as, by their introduction, brought with them no necessity for any change of habit, fashion, or tradition in the school. They have been16 suggested reforms IN public schools. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer Work in Public Schools Former lengths of school years. During the earlier part of the nineteenth century, and even later, it was not unusual for rural and small - town children, especially girls and small boys, to attend school during a considerable part of the summer rather than during the severe winter weather. Probably the chief cause was that because of the lack of good roads and the distances that must be travelled to reach the schools, it was difficult to attend school during the winter. However, as roads were improved and as cities and towns became more numerous, the practice Of having summer terms became less common until it has become the almost universal practice for the longest vacation period of the year to come during the summer months, or perhaps to include all of them. In the larger cities Of the country conditions were different. Many, probably most, of them formerly had school years much longer than is the custom now, with Short vacations including only a small part of the summer. For example, the Commissioner of Education1 has re ported data on lengths of school years about 1841-42. Some of the lengths are reported in days, some in weeks, and some in months. Boston is stated to have had a session of 224 days, Washington of 238, Philadelphia Of and Detroit of 253. That of Cleveland was forty - three weeks in length, that of Chicago forty-eight, and that of. New York forty-nine. Brooklyn, Baltimore, and Cincinnati had eleven-month sessions, whereas Buffalo had one of twelve months. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of the Cleveland Public Schools Though there are yet among us those to whom the history of the Public Schools of Cleveland is a matter of personal experience or observation, the exact sequence and relation of events are sometimes recovered with no little difficulty. Had we an unbroken official record of the Schools, there would be still wanting such a narration as would enable us to comprehend the spirit and scope of purpose which have prevailed in the successive stages of progress which have been made, or the causes which have led to occasional retrogression. But, unfortunately, we have no such records from which we may construct even a skeleton of the School history of the last half-century; and, to supply some of the missing parts, we are compelled to rely upon the memory of the older citizens who had, in any way, been connected with the management of the Schools. To prevent the entire loss of interesting and valuable historical material, therefore, it seemed prudent to the Board of Education to put into permanent form a record of the past, from which some estimate may be made of advancement in the present and of progress in the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Schools and the War The following pages represent an endeavor to study the effects of the war upon schools in other countries and especi ally in the United States. The first four chapters deal with some specific problems of the public schools in connection with the war and were written when the great world conflict was still going on. They show the revolutionary changes which the public schools have made in adjusting themselves to the needs of the war, and suggest the unmistakable tendencies of our educational reconstruction which is yet to come. The last two chapters were written when the great war had just come to an end. In them the author has tried to show, in the light of the experience of many school systems in this country; how American public education can be reorganized in order to meet the needs of the coming new world order. It is the author's hope that they may be of some value to the general discussion of educational reform. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome's Attack on Our Public Schools We would much rather our children should grow up in ignorance than be taught in a school that is not Catholic. Freeman's Romish Journal says: Let the pub lic school system go to where it came from - the devil. We want Christian schools, and the State cannot tell us what Christianity is. The Cincinnati Catholic Telegraph says It will be a glorious day for the Catholics of this country, when, under the blows of justice and morality, our school system will be shivered to pieces. Cardinal Manning says: The common school system of the United States is the worst in the world. Father Walker declares, Unless you suppress the public school system, as at present conducted, it will prove the damnation of this country. From being the possession of the few, regarded by the people as a form of black art, read ing has come to be the heritage of the many. The man who can not read to some extent is now as rare as five hundred years ago he that could. By reading we satisfy our instant craving for current news, we read for the pleasure that literature affords, and we stand on the shoulders of our ancestors in all realms of knowledge. A librarian has said, Take away our reading, and the observation possible to one man, with the thought it will awaken, may result in shrewdness, even profundity, but they can never give him breadth.
