Book Synopsis I Was a Teenager in the American Revolution by : Elizabeth Ryan Metz
Download or read book I Was a Teenager in the American Revolution written by Elizabeth Ryan Metz and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-04-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teenagers were critical to the American victory in the Revolutionary War. Over half of the colonial population was under the age of 16. A draft of all boys between the ages of 16 and 19 was enacted to fill the ranks of the Continental Army, leaving their sisters to fill their places at home. These circumstances meant that teenagers played an essential role not only in combat but also on the home front. Israel Trask joined the militia at the age of 10; by the time he turned 12 he was serving at sea. Abigail Foote, a 15-year-old from Connecticut, wove cloth, sewed clothes, weeded the garden and made cheese, providing much needed clothing and food. Henry Yeager, 13, barely escaped hanging for his army role as drummer. Dicey Langston, 16 when the war began, risked her life to pass loyalist information to the Patriots. Future president Andrew Jackson was only 14 when he was captured and sent to jail at Camden. This book relates the Revolutionary War experiences of 23 teenagers. Drawing on firsthand accounts of young Americans from Massachusetts to South Carolina and from many different backgrounds--wealthy and poor, slave and free, Tory and Patriot--it provides a fascinating, varied look at America's fight for independence and teenagers' role in this struggle for liberty. Excerpts from journals and memoirs make up the body of the text. Appendices provide a chronology of events and a glossary of sailing terms.

Book excerpt: NIV Revolution equips you to be a revolutionary---living your faith on the edge, challenging things that need to be challenged, discovering new possibilities, and helping others to discover them as well. Like no other Bible you have ever read, NIV Revolution is for today's teenage guy going toe-to-toe with a hard-hitting world. God knows all about this world---he is the authority when it comes to understanding relationships, communication, sex, parents, popularity, peer pressure, drugs, divorce, and everything else teenagers face. He also knows what makes you tick, loves you more than you can ever imagine, and wants you to experience a life of purpose, power, and impact. This Bible strengthens you and hones your spiritual revolutionary edge: 'Battlelines' show you how other teen guys deal with relationships, sex, drug abuse, and other real-life issues; 'Match-Ups' pit the good guys against the bad guys of the Bible to uncover winning---and losing---approaches to life; 'Challenge Notes' dare you to reach for everything God wants you to be. And there's plenty more---enough to help you make a kingdom-difference in the world around you. Fill your hands with Revolution. It will open your eyes, strengthen your courage, and guide you like a compass toward a life worth living. NIV 2011. The New International Version (NIV) translation of the Bible is the world's most popular modern-English Bible---easy to understand, yet rich with the detail found in the original languages.

Book Synopsis My Life as a Colombian Revolutionary by : María Eugenia Vásquez Perdomo
Download or read book My Life as a Colombian Revolutionary written by María Eugenia Vásquez Perdomo and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In My Life as a Colombian Revolutionary, María Eugenia Vásquez Perdomo presents a gripping account of her experiences as a member of M-19, one of the most successful guerrilla movements in Colombia's tumultuous modern history. Vásquez's remarkable story opens with her happy childhood in a middle-class provincial household in which she was encouraged to be adventurous and inquisitive. As an eighteen-year-old university student in Bogotá, María Eugenia embraced radical politics and committed herself to militant action to rid her country of an abusive government. Dedicated and daring, Vásquez took part in some of the M-19's boldest operations in the 1970s and 1980s and became one of its leaders. She was able to avoid detection for nearly twenty years in the movement because she was both clever and considered too attractive to be a guerrillera. Her vivid narrative brings to life the men and women who were her comrades and conveys their anxiety and exhilaration as they carried out their actions. When she tells of her love affairs with some of M-19's top leaders, she cannot separate romance from camaraderie or escape a sense of impending tragedy. If Vásquez gave us only a rare insider's account of youth culture and a guerrilla movement in a Latin American country, this would be a book well worth reading. But she also gives us an unsparing analysis of what it meant to be a woman in the movement and how much her commitment to radical politics cost her. Author note: María Eugenia Vásquez Perdomo is Director, Fundación Mujer y Futuro (NGO: Woman and Future Foundation), working in coordination with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on the project "Mujer y Derechos" (Women and Rights), which serves women forcibly displaced by the armed conflict. The Spanish-language edition of this book, published as Escrito para no morir, was awarded the Colombian National Prize for Testimonial Literature in 1998. Lorena Terando is Assistant Professor of Translation at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
