My goal before reviewing it was to "peruse" it and stop now and then when a particular passage caught my attention. Just read enough to do an honest review. But I sat down early in the morning and began actually reading the book. Just to get started. Page one lead to page two and to page three and page 4 etc. and soon I was into the book. I stopped to eat breakfast but I couldn't wait to get back to the story. Garry says the book is not a "cruising handbook". Maybe not but it's certainly a "cruiser primer" in my opinion. I can't think of much he leaves out in terms of the life of a cruiser. Maybe Pirates. But that is it. I like the way Carol writes her own accounts of the adventure. It's good to see two perspectives of the same situation and experience. The psychological aspect of long-distance cruising can be as interesting as the pragmatic side of keeping a boat going. Carol and Garry both give you great insights into this very personal side of the adventure. If I were to criticize the book I'd say from a designers perspective, I would have liked to see some more descriptions of the other boats Garry and Carol encountered on their voyage. That's just me. When I finished the book I remembered saying, "Long range cruising is all about fixing your boat in exotic places". Bob Perry

Book excerpt: First published in 1957, this tells of Santa Marta, which to the casual visitor is a sub-tropical paradise, a small sister of Jamaica, Bermuda and Nassau, unmentioned in the colour-splashed brochures of travel agents: an island where the sun shines throughout the year on the sandy beaches of innumerable coves, on the cane-fields and coconut plantations, on the shingled hits of the peasant villages and the fine houses of the white planters handed down through generation after generation, from the Sugar Barons of a past century. But this was not how the newspaper columnist, Bradshaw, saw it when he arrived on his first trip to the Caribbean. Bradshaw found Santa Marta a smouldering volcano. This novel is a brilliantly successful evocation of the atmosphere and the problems of life on a West Indian island. It is a dramatic story, packed with incident and thrilling in this mounting tension. It weaves into the fortunes of a small group of islanders the ambitions and jealousies, the hopes and fears, the complexes and inhibitions of a people to whom the tint of the skin is more important than wealth, or power, or skill, whose tangled history has bequeathed a heritage of passion in an island where the blood never cools.

Book excerpt: When James Danbury threw open the door to his pastor on a stormy night in 1842, he never imagined that the news his pastor carried-and the bundle he cradled in his arms-would forever change the Danbury world. THE AUTHOR Charles Carrin, a naturalist and a historian, has devoted much of his life to exploring the history and outdoors of the state his ancestors helped establish. From a background rich in personal history and tradition, Charles writes about early Florida with passion and insight. Born in Homestead, Florida, on the edge of the Everglades in 1930, he is a fifth generation Floridian, descended from two pioneer-Florida preachers who rode the circuit to minister to their parishioners during the war years. His great-great-grandmother, born in 1798, is buried on the banks of the Suwanee River. With Native American ancestry in each family tree, Charles portrays the Seminole War with sensitivity towards red, black, and white men alike. In 1949, his plans to study botany in Central America were overridden by a clear directive from the Lord, calling Charles into Christian ministry. Now in his sixty-first year of ministry and retired from pastoring a church, his schedule remains busy with speaking engagements, writing, and mentoring of younger pastors. His monthly articles can be viewed at www.CharlesCarrinMinistries.com Charles and his wife Laurie reside in Boynton Beach, Florida. Dorothy Easley has been blessed by the ministry of Charles Carrin since she was a child, and Charles baptized her father. She is descended from pioneers who established a trading post in Florida in the 1800's. Dorothy's fore-parents were the first white settlers to permit Indians to make purchases on credit and always maintained good relations with local tribes. Dorothy teaches math at Broward College. She and her husband Ralph make their home in South Florida.

When successful songwriter Tabitha Callahan swaps a summer of sadness for pet sitting around the world, she intends to use the time to heal her broken heart. Tabitha can’t believe her luck when she picks up a housesit on the rugged and beautiful Portuguese island of Madeira. The villa is luxurious, the views breath-taking and her charges, a gorgeous but aloof cat and two cute and friendly Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, are perfect companions while she works on some new material and attempts to reconcile her past. Kirby. Eleanor and her friends have shut down the mysterious Concentrator in the Arctic, but their mission is far from over. The earth is still spinning out of its orbit and growing colder by the day. Their only chance is to find the other Concentrators embedded around the world and deactivate them before it’s too late. But doing so won’t be easy. The Global Energy Trust has branded Eleanor, her mother, and their friends international terrorists and is tracking their every move. The G.E.T. will stop at nothing to harness the power of the Concentrators in order to preserve the select few people its leaders deem worthy, and Eleanor is soon forced to ask herself whether it’s worth risking the lives of the entire human race for a slim chance to save it.

Time Flowing Backwards spans over three decades of Jefferies career spent with bands Nocturnal Projections, This Kind of Punishment, and The Cakekitchen as well as a solo artist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raised in poverty, forced from his home, and left to find his own way at a young age, Clive Kinlock struggled to keep himself alive, resorting to substance abuse to cope. Realizing the streets of New York City would never allow him to leave that life behind, he moved to Montana to start again. There, he committed a crime that sent him to prison. Coerced into taking a plea agreement, he ended up with a seventy year sentence. This is the story of one man’s journey to redemption and rehabilitation. From the injustices of his early childhood to the inhumane treatment behind bars, it examines the causes and realities of life in prison. After years of personal struggle, the authors, Clive and Joy Wellington Kinlock, have become powerful voices for prison reform and the benefits of community outreach programs. This compelling autobiography is a call to action and a celebration of resilience in the human spirit, but above all, it is a story of enduring love.

Book excerpt: “I write to mend those places that got snagged, ripped, or frayed while being human, with other humans,” is a quote from Erika Harris. BEFORE I FORGET, is a compilation of short stories that had its birth at the Villas of Canandaigua, New York. A group of writing enthusiasts gathered to organize and compile a book of stories that represents what seniors can produce when working in a cohesive writing environment. Many of the stories have deep meaning to the authors. Other stories are fictional and show how stories can inspire others to write. Writing can be the vehicle for healing, pleasure of days gone by, or humor with life’s happenings, that can be transformed onto paper. It has been the goal of the authors to give the readers a glimpse into the lives, experiences, dreams, and hopes of their lives and loved ones. For the folks involved in the short story project, there was a common thread that everyone wanted to write a story and be remembered for it which created a feeling of unity within the group. According to Antonio Porchia who was Italian born but later in life became an Argentinian poet, “One lives in the hopes of becoming a memory”. The stories within this book give an example that every person or thing becomes a memory and unless a life or a happening is recorded, it will be lost forever. Everyone needs to be remembered; writing and recording is a way for this to happen. Our group hopes that you as a reader will be inspired to tell your story, no matter what it may be. Even if it is a fictional story, there is merit in having your name be seen as an author. The cover of the book is in memory of Doris Kane, watercolor artist, Steve Kane’s mother. Book excerpt: About Junkins novel Orchards of Almonds: Don Junkins semi-autobiographical novel, Orchards of Almonds, blossoms with a Camelot-studded cast of characters that includes Kennedys alive and dead, LBJ and company, Reagan, and dozens of California politicos, academics, Viet Nam protesters and movie stars. . . . Junkinsas much the poet in design as in languagehas achieved another triumph of deftness, irony and grace. Allen Josephs (On Hemingway and Spain) I was bowled over by Puss. I have never read, in any other literary work, such a profoundly pure and honest and dead-on rendering of the young girl. And that coupled with her extraordinary father/daughter relationship, it moved me deeply. He did for that relationship what Hemingway did for father and son in Indian Camp. Linda Miller (Letters from the Lost Generation: Gerald and Sara Murphy and Friends)
