Book excerpt: Our family have always been proud of our Native American heritage, but were unable to find information beyond 6th generations. We suspected that our Cherokee ancestors could have been among tribal elite because our 5th generation grandmother, ANNA CLAUNCH RILEY, married into the Henry family, a prosperous and influential family in Alabama. It was not until my father, an accomplished genealogist, traced our ancestors beyond 6th generation that we discovered they were important historic figures. Our ancestors were members of the great Carpenter, Moytoy, dynasty who produced some of the most important 18th century leaders of the Cherokee nation. The names of some of these individuals such as; Wuerteh Watts 'mother of Sequoyah' Attakullakulla, Dragging Canoe, Old Hop, Nancy Ward, Cunne Shote, and Maj. Lowery will be familiar to those who are aware of Cherokee history. This book is an attempt to document what we found about our Cherokee roots, and to preserve that information for our family and others who are interested in Cherokee history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the generations, Cherokee citizens became a conglomerate people. Early in the nineteenth century, tribal leaders adapted their government to mirror the new American model. While accommodating institutional slavery of black people, they abandoned the Cherokee matrilineal clan structure that once determined their citizenship. The 1851 census revealed a total population nearing 18,000, which included 1,844 slaves and 64 free blacks. What it means to be Cherokee has continued to evolve over the past century, yet the histories assembled here by Ty Wilson, Karen Coody Cooper and other contributing authors reveal a meaningful story of identity and survival.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most histories of the Cherokee nation focus on its encounters with Europeans, its conflicts with the U. S. government, and its expulsion from its lands during the Trail of Tears. This work, however, traces the origins of the Cherokee people to the third century B.C.E. and follows their migrations through the Americas to their homeland in the lower Appalachian Mountains. Using a combination of DNA analysis, historical research, and classical philology, it uncovers the Jewish and Eastern Mediterranean ancestry of the Cherokee and reveals that they originally spoke Greek before adopting the Iroquoian language of their Haudenosaunee allies while the two nations dwelt together in the Ohio Valley.

Book excerpt: Previously released as "Big Tiger's Granddaughters", "A Cherokee Legacy: Remembering Our Native American Heritage" is a newly edited work centered on the genealogical maternal and paternal lineages of Jamie Whitfield Sewell, a proud and lifelong citizen of the Cherokee Nation. It delves into the complex past of the Cherokee Nation using historic documents and archival resources, sourced from many earlier works and ancestry projects on Cherokee genealogy and history, especially the essential research of Dr. Emmet Starr. In addition, we have added information obtained from scholarly books, articles, and research papers, and have accessed documents from tribal, state, federal, and other archival or manuscript collections. This book follows Jamie's ancestors on the trials of the Trail of Tears as the Cherokee were forcibly expelled from their original homelands to rebuild a new Cherokee Nation in the western lands. In this work we meet Jamie's ancestral lineages well known to students of Cherokee history, such as the Tiger, Smith, Rogers, and Adair family surnames documented generation by generation. We meet exceptional historical Cherokee ancestors of Jamie such as Gahoga Foster Adair, Tiana Rogers, Chief Cabin Smith, and Chief Big Tiger, individuals whose names are well-known to Cherokee history and whose memory remain an inspiration to many. About the authors, Hodalee C. S. Sewell (Muscogee Creek/Cheraw) is a researcher and writer, and an alumnus of Rogers State University Claremore Oklahoma, he writes on identity, with a focus on race and culture. Jamie Whitfield Sewell(Cherokee/Onondaga) has worked for over a decade for the Cherokee Nation as a foster parent through the Indian Child Welfare Act. Both of her parents were like her, enrolled citizens of the Cherokee Nation.

Book excerpt: From the author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist Maud's Line, an epic novel that follows a web of complex family alliances and culture clashes in the Cherokee Nation during the aftermath of the Civil War, and the unforgettable woman at its center. It's the early spring of 1875 in the Cherokee Nation West. A baby, a black hired hand, a bay horse, a gun, a gold stash, and a preacher have all gone missing. Cherokee America Singer, known as "Check," a wealthy farmer, mother of five boys, and soon-to-be widow, is not amused. In this epic of the American frontier, several plots intertwine around the heroic and resolute Check: her son is caught in a compromising position that results in murder; a neighbor disappears; another man is killed. The tension mounts and the violence escalates as Check's mixed race family, friends, and neighbors come together to protect their community--and painfully expel one of their own. Cherokee America vividly, and often with humor, explores the bonds--of blood and place, of buried histories and half-told tales, of past grief and present injury--that connect a colorful, eclectic cast of characters, anchored by the clever, determined, and unforgettable Check.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most claims of Native American ancestry rest on the mother's ethnicity. This can be verified by a DNA test determining what type of mitochondrial DNA she passed to you. A hundred participants in DNA Consultants multi-phase Cherokee DNA Study did just that. What they had in common is they were previously rejected--by commercial firms, genealogy groups, government agencies and tribes. Their mitochondrial DNA was not classified as Native American. These are the "anomalous" Cherokee. Share the journeys of discovery and self-awareness of these passionate volunteers who defied the experts and are helping write a new chapter in the Peopling of the Americas. "The Yateses' DNA findings are revolutionary." --Stephen C. Jett, Atlantic Ocean Crossings. "Monumental."--Richard L. Thornton, Apalache Foundation.
