Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Bird Allies HE scheme of the following work is sufficiently explained by its title, and I have only to regret that limitations of space have prevented me from mentioning many birds which I would willingly have described. I have felt, however, that it is desirable to consider at some length those which are more especially beneficial, rather than to treat all alike upon one and the same footing. I hold, nevertheless, that no British bird is utterly and wholly destructive, but that the misdeeds of even the most mischievous are atoned for in some degree by services rendered to us in other ways. Birds aid us in three distinct manners: firstly, by acting as scavengers, and destroying putrid matter; secondly, by devouring the seeds of the various wild plants which are so troublesome upon cultivated land; thirdly, and most important, by the slaughter of insects. And in one of these three tasks all take their share, lesser or greater as the case may be, but always appreciable and of value. To avoid monotomy, all decriptions have been relegated to the appendix. An attempt has been made to enlist sympathy with, as well as to awaken interest in, bird life, for the interest without sympathy, in this case, would only encourage the naturally destructive instincts of childhood. For the purpose of showing the importance of birds in literature, as well as for the purpose of calling into play the aesthetic faculty, poems and legends have been included. All hackneyed poems have been avoided. For their generous permission to use valuable copy-righted material, intebtedness is gratefully acknowledged to Houghton, Miffin & Co., Small, Maynard & Co., D. Appleton & Co., and Our Dumb Animals Publishing Co.; to Mrs. Margaret Sangster, Mr. Eben Rexford, Mr. Clinton Scollard, and Mr. Frank Dempster Sherman. For the photographic illustrations, I am especially indebted to Mr. Francis Hobart Herrick, an earnest bird student and an enthusiastic photographer, who has kindly permitted me the use of some of the remarkably fine photographs used in illustrating his interesting book, The Home Life of Wild Birds, a book with which all bird students are already familiar. Mr. Frank M. Chapman, Mr. A. R. Dugmore, Mr. John Cameron, Miss Ruth Shutts, Mr. James Miller, and the Recreation Publishing Co., have also assisted me in the same way. Want of space precludes the individual mention of a number of my associates to whom I am indebted for both counsel and good-natured critism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Bird Friends and Foes The bird branch of the animal tree, since forking off from its reptilian stem, has grown much and flowered beautifully. How much more admirable, for instance, is the soft plumage of the bird than the harsh body mail of the reptile. How much more pleasing by contrast are the notes of birds, some of them among the best music in the world, to the glum silence of reptiles, broken only by threatening hissing. Birds have a monopoly of feathers; every feathered animal is a bird. No bird lacks feathers; no other crea ture has them. Feathers not only have proved wonder fully adaptable in aiding the bird to fly, but they have developed as down and thickly set body plumage, that enable the bird to resist cold, to float like a cork on icy waters, and even to repose on the ice itself, enveloped in a thick downy mantle that shuts out the killing frost. Birds made a great and wonderful advance when they left behind that reptilian inheritance of cold blood, which bound them to the tropics, and began to develop a warm blooded circulation. Now their systems are so efficient in keeping up body temperature that birds are the warm est of all living things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Ducks and Their Allies IN 1896 and the following years I wrote a series of articles. On Indian Ducks and their Allies in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. In 1908 these articles. Were brought up to date, corrected and added to and appeared in book form, and so well was this volume received by the public, especially by sportsmen in India, that the edition was soon exhausted. The first edition appeared principally to meet a want which had long been felt by small-game shooters in India. That is to say a volume, reference to which would not only show how each duck could be identified, but would also give some idea of its habits and its scarcity or the reverse. Hume and Marshall's Game Birds of India, which was published in 1879 80, grand book as it was and is, was felt to be behind. The times, and much had since been recorded in various magazines and journals. But these records were scattered here, there and everywhere, and could not be consulted Without the greatest difficulty, and it was, indeed, quite impossible for anyone who had not access to a very complete library to say what had, and what had not, been recorded. The first edition may be said not only to have served its purpose for the. Time being, but it served yet another and perhaps even more important one, for since its appearance a. Very large amount of information has been published to add to and correct its contents. This second edition incorporates these additions and corrections, and adds a considerable amount of matter not obtainable by me when writing in India. Several species have been added to the Indian list, and the geographical distribution of certain others has been more correctly given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Life Stories, Vol. 1: Compiled From the Writings of Audubon, Bend Nuttall, and Wilson HE four writers from whom the chapters in these Bird Life Stories have been drawn are especially notable for the absorb ing interest with which they pursued the study of birds. They were all original investigators, exploring the trackless wilderness in their search for knowledge. Especially was this true of Audubon and Wilson, who laid the foundations of the science of ornithology in America, but it was also true to a less extent of Nuttall and Bendire. This interest which our authors brought to their work has of course been communicated to their writings, so that their accounts of our birds are on the whole the most interesting that have ever been published. In the books of this series I have tried to select for each of the chosen birds that account which seemed the best. I have modified the language and punctuation only so far as was necessary to shorten some sentences, and to render clear the meaning of others. Occasion ally I have omitted parts which had no special modern interest or which our later\knowledge has shown to be incorrect. In this work of revision, as well as in the preparation of the additional notes, I have had the assistance of Mr. Ralph Hoficmann, lecturer on ornithology for the Massackusetts Audubon Society, and Dr. Ned Dearborn of the Field Columbia Museum, Chicago, both expert ornithologists who are thoroughly conversant with the most recent developments of the science. The specimens shown in the colored plates were collected and mounted by Doctor. Dearborn expressly for this work, and the colored plates themselves have been made under his supervision. To both of these gentlemen I am glad to express my hearty thanks, as well as to the officers of the Smithsonian Institution, for permission to use such of the writings of the late Major Bendire as I desired. In Nature's Allies, Larry Nielsen presents the inspiring stories of eight conservation pioneers who show that through passion and perseverance we can each make a difference, even in the face of political opposition. Nielsen's vivid biographies of John Muir, Ding Darling, Aldo Leopold, Rachel Carson, Chico Mendes, Billy Frank Jr., Wangari Maathai, and Gro Harlem Brundtland are meant to rally a new generation of conservationists to follow in their footsteps and inspire students, conservationists, and nature lovers to speak up for nature and prove that individuals can affect positive change in the world.

People sometimes say that a duck has teeth, but that is not the case. A duck's bill is rough on the edges like a file, so that it can hold slippery frogs and little minnows, but it does not use its bill in chewing food-just in gathering it and holding it until it can get the food into its mouth and swallow it. The Skull of a bird is different from the skull Of other animals. The Skull of a squirrel IS composed Of several bones, fastened together In a sort of saw-tooth style, like the edges of two saws put together. A bird's Skull is in one piece.
