In the Iliad she is presented as the daughter of Jupiter and Dione and in later traditions as the daughter of Euonyme and Cronos, but the legend of Venus sprung from the froth of the sea is the most known. She arose from the sea near the island of Cyprus, or, according to Hesiod, of Cythera, whither she was wafted by the zephyrs, and received on the seashore by the seasons, daughters of Jupiter and Themis. She surpassed all the goddesses in beauty, and likewise had the power of granting beauty and invincible charm to others. She was the owner of a celebrated girdle which when worn even by the most deformed excited love and rekindled extinguished flames..." Emily Stedman closed her book. J. and I had been hunting for it during weeks and months, from Chelsea to Blackfriars, when one day on the way to take a train on the Underground we saw the notice "To Let" in windows just where they ought to have been, - high above the Embankment and the River, - and we knew at a glance that we should be glad to spend the rest of our lives looking out of them. But something depended on the house we looked out from, and, while our train went without us, we hurried to discover it. We were in luck. It was all that we could have asked: as simple in architecture, its bricks as time-stained, as the courts of the Temple or Gray's Inn. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. I have dreamed of it through twenty years of boarding, light housekeeping, furnished rooms, flats, and all other imaginable modes of existence in other people's houses. Every wise woman buildeth her a house, saith the Preacher. This statement may have been true in his times, but, unfortunately, it is not so to-day. No doubt every woman, wise or otherwise, wishes to build a house, but in ninety nine cases out of a hundred she never gets be yond the desire. My discontented sisters, I feel like saying, whenever I see a homeless woman, you have a perfect right to a home of your own; yea, more, to a house of your own, and the only way to build one is just to build, as I did.
