Book excerpt: The osteopathic profession has developed many treatment modalities and approaches to manipulation. Ligamentous articular strain is the name given by William G. Sutherland, D.O., the founder of cranial osteopathy, to a group of techniques that he used for treating the body outside the core axis of the craniosacral system. The term has since come to refer to a wide variety of techniques that engage the body's own healing mechanisms in a relatively direct manner. For over thirty years the Dallas Osteopathic Study Group, originally under the tutelage of Rollin Becker, D.O., has been exploring this type of manipulation. Ligamentous Articular Strain is the distillation of their work. The introductory chapters address the historical development of this approach, and review some of its scientific underpinnings. The remaining chapters are devoted to an examination of the body, area by area, from the feet to the shoulders, describing and depicting effective manipulative techniques. Ligamentous Articular Strain provides clear instructions and vivid illustrations which will enable the trained practitioner to quickly gain proficiency in these techniques. It also presents a cogent approach to working with the concepts of the key lesion and the bowstring, first developed by Rollin Becker. In this revised edition, over a hundred new illustrations graphically depict the techniques described in the book, and minor changes have been made to update the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Osteopathic Technic A brief summary of the principles of Osteopathy so far as they relate to the matter to be discussed in this book is a fitting introduction to it. Osteopathy rests on a very sure foundation. Its philosophy rests on axioms; its practice on facts; its profession and its history on success. The axioms on which its philosophy is founded are: I. Everything composed of mechanical parts is subject to disorder among those parts. From this axiom there is no appeal. There is no exception to it. The solar system is not an exception, the eye of the beetle is not an exception, and the human body is not an exception. A corollary of this axiom is that the greater the number of parts, the more frequent should be disorder or lesion among them; and there are a great many different parts to the human body. II. If anything depends on the order, then that thing will be deranged by the disorder. In the human body, function and health depend on the order; and disease arises from the disorder. There is no appeal from this axiom, for the laws of mechanics are fundamental wherever they apply. These are the two fundamental axioms on which the science is based.
