Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations have been made on thermal convection below 1K in a dilute solution of 3He in superfluid 4He contained in a cylindrical cell of aspect ratio GAMMA = 1.20. Complicated oscillatory phenomena were observed with a high degree of reproducibility using two temperature sensors. Phase-space analysis suggests a description in terms of strange-attractor dynamics.

Book excerpt: After a brief review of Benard convection experiments at low temperatures, experiments with dilute solutions of 3He in superfluid 4He in small-aspect-ratio cells are described. In both rectangular and cylindrical geometries, two states with distinctively different thermal conductances are observed. The square of the frequency of the oscillation found in the state with higher conductance is observed to vary linearly with epsilon = (.delta. T/.delta. T/sub c/)-1. The transition to chaos has been studied using a solution of 1.6 mole % 3He in a rectangular cell with an aspect ratio GAMMA = 1.00 at 0.7 K. Techniques used to characterize the transition include the time series, power spectral density, phase space reconstruction of the trajectory, and Poincare sections. The analyses reveal clearly that the chaotic state is described by a strange attractor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dilute solution of 3He in superfluid 4He usually behaves as a single component classical fluid in the context of hydrodynamic convection. However, certain convective states can be excited which do not seem to exist in classical convection. These states are characterized by noisy temperature fluctuations and a pronounced decrease in thermal conductance relative to the classical convecting states. Critical convective flow fields are observed analogous to critical velocities for superfluid turbulence in pipes. The magnitude of the average critical velocities for these two types of superfluid turbulence are in good agreement. Also, a quantitative estimate of energy dissipation due to the interaction of normal fluid and quantized vortex lines appears to account for the large decrease in thermal heat transport for the turbulent states. These states are identified as states of convectively driven superfluid turbulence. 23 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: This work was begun quite some time ago at the University of Oxford during the tenure of an Overseas Scholarship of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 and was completed at Banga lore when the author was being supported by a maintenance allowance from the CSIR Pool for unemployed scientists. It is hoped that significant developments taking place as late as the beginning of 1965 have been incorporated. The initial impetus and inspiration for the work came from Dr. K. Mendelssohn. To him and to Drs. R. W. Hill and N. E. Phillips, who went through the whole of the text, the author is obliged in more ways than one. For permission to use figures and other materials, grateful thanks are tendered to the concerned workers and institutions. The author is not so sanguine as to imagine that all technical and literary flaws have been weeded out. If others come across them, they may be charitably brought to the author's notice as proof that physics has become too vast to be comprehended by a single onlooker. E. S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a century, from the Van der Waals mean field description (1874) of gases to the introduction of renormalization group (RG techniques 1970), thermodynamics and statistical physics were just unable to account for the incredible universality which was observed in numerous critical phenomena. The great success of RG techniques is not only to solve perfectly this challenge of critical behaviour in thermal transitions but to introduce extremely useful tools in a wide field of daily situations where a system exhibits scale invariance. The introduction of scaling, scale invariance and universality concepts has been a significant turn in modern physics and more generally in natural sciences. Since then, a new "physics of scaling laws and critical exponents", rooted in scaling approaches, allows quantitative descriptions of numerous phenomena, ranging from phase transitions to earthquakes, polymer conformations, heartbeat rhythm, diffusion, interface growth and roughening, DNA sequence, dynamical systems, chaos and turbulence. The chapters are jointly written by an experimentalist and a theorist. This book aims at a pedagogical overview, offering to the students and researchers a thorough conceptual background and a simple account of a wide range of applications. It presents a complete tour of both the formal advances and experimental results associated with the notion of scaling, in physics, chemistry and biology.

In the relativistic quantum vacuum they are known as cosmic strings, in superconductors as quantized flux lines, and in superfluids, low-density atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and neutron stars as quantized vortex lines. This collection of articles by leading scientists presents a modern treatment of the physics of vortex matter, mainly applied to unconventional superconductors and superfluids but with extensions to other areas of physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atkins' Physical Chemistry: Molecular Thermodynamics and Kinetics is designed for use on the second semester of a quantum-first physical chemistry course. Based on the hugely popular Atkins' Physical Chemistry, this volume approaches molecular thermodynamics with the assumption that students will have studied quantum mechanics in their first semester. The exceptional quality of previous editions has been built upon to make this new edition of Atkins' Physical Chemistry even more closely suited to the needs of both lecturers and students. Re-organised into discrete 'topics', the text is more flexible to teach from and more readable for students. Now in its eleventh edition, the text has been enhanced with additional learning features and maths support to demonstrate the absolute centrality of mathematics to physical chemistry. Increasing the digestibility of the text in this new approach, the reader is brought to a question, then the math is used to show how it can be answered and progress made. The expanded and redistributed maths support also includes new 'Chemist's toolkits' which provide students with succinct reminders of mathematical concepts and techniques right where they need them. Checklists of key concepts at the end of each topic add to the extensive learning support provided throughout the book, to reinforce the main take-home messages in each section. The coupling of the broad coverage of the subject with a structure and use of pedagogy that is even more innovative will ensure Atkins' Physical Chemistry remains the textbook of choice for studying physical chemistry.
